As the world starts to open its cinemas as the slowly starts to return to some kind of normal even during the COVID-19 pandemic, South Korea among a few other countries report film taking over a million at the box office.

Leading the way this week is South Korea as their new movie Deliver Us From Evil tops the chart with the Chinese release of 1917 taking the film to number 2 as a re-entry.

Here is a rundown of this week top 5 film worldwide 7th - 9th August 2020.

Deliver Us From Evil

This murder mystery from Thailand hots the top on its debut release in its native country with a weekend gross of $13.4 Million.

The movie is directed by Won-Chan Hong and stars Jung-min Hwang and Jung-jae Lee.

1917

1917

After a delayed release in China Sam Mendes World War drama re-enters the global box office at number 2 with $5.6 Million.

THis puts the movies total gross worldwide at $379.4 Million since its release in December of 2019.

Intersteller

With the delay in the release of tenet one of Christopher Nolans previous films gets a re-release and this weeks sits at number 3 with $4.2 Million, the film has taken $699.5 Million since its 2014 release.

Dolittle

The Robert Downey Jr. movie took the top slot over the last coupe of week and this week slips to number 4 with a gross of $2 Millon pushing the films total to $184.4 Million.

Sheep Without A Shepherd

Making a re-entry this week is the Sam Quah directed movies which is at 5 this week with a $2 Million gross taking its total global gross to $5.5 Million.

Clearly there were no no releases of not this week as entering at the top of the video chart is Nicholas Cage in a film called Left Behind.

Left Behind was badly received by critics in the US when released on October 3rd and made only $2 million at the box office so the distributers decided not to give it a UK theatrical release.

That decision may have paid off as it sells well on video in the UK, although it is on one of the quietest periods of sale in the UK, the test will be where it is next week.

Last weeks top sale falls to number 2 this week, Frozen from Disney spending yet another week high on the chart.

Other new videos this week are:
Deliver Us From Evil at number 7
The Rover at number 17

At the UK box office this week Luc Besson's directed Lucy about a woman using 100% of her brain takes over at the top.

Starring Scarlett Johansson Lucy tops the box office on it's debut week of release with a weekend gross of £3.07 million.

Compared to Luc Bessons previous films this is by far the best opening he has had, Arthur and the Invisibles is his highest grossing British release which took just over a million on it's release in 2007.

Scarlett Johansson is part of the Marvel Avengers universe so has seen some astronomical releases over the past few years and so it's a little unfair to compare!

Falling into second place is last weeks top film The Inbetweeners 2 which has now grossed £27.6 million after 3 weeks of release.

There is a few other new entries this week which are
Into the Storm at 4 Deliver Us From Evil at 5
What if at 6

Doctor Who: Deep Breath at 8, from a single day special showing on Saturday
Two Days, One Night at 14

Last year Matt Damon was starring in Elysium which entered at the top of the box office knocking Kick-Ass 2 right down to 7.

Five years ago Inglourious Basterds was the new top film in the UK knocking The Time Travers Wife down to the runner up spot.

Ten years ago M. Night Shyamalan released The Village which hit the top spot on it's debut with The Bourne Supremacy falling a single place to number 2.

Fifteen years ago Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace reclaimed the top spot knocking Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged me to number 2, highest new film was Micky Blue Eys at 3.

This week Transformers: Age of Extinction was the top film in America for the second week running and again far out grossed the rest of the box office.

In it's second weekend of release the battling robots took $36,400,000 and has now grossed $174,746,000 over it's 10 day run so far.

Not content with making a big slash in the US it has made nearly $400 million worldwide and is still to open in many countries including the UK where it's released this Friday.

Highest new film of the week is Melissa McCarthy in Tammy, opening with a gross of $21.2 million, thats $15 million behind Transformers.

Other new film on the US box office
Deliver Us from Evil at 3
Earth to Echo at 6

Check out the US box office

This weekend in the US it was a simple case of The Transformers conquers all as it takes the highest Friday to Sunday gross of the year so far.

The fourth in the Michael Bay directed Transformers films, Transformers: Age of Extinction, hot US cinemas this weekend and took an incredible $100 million, the highest of the year to date.

The Transformers massive gross was as much as the rest of the box office combined, last weeks top film Think Like a Man Too takes a big tumble to number 4 this week.

Next week comedy Tammy and horror Deliver Us From Evil make their debut's, Transformers will get some competition but should stay at the top.
