ADVERTISMENT

Glass remained at the top of the global box office this weekend although the big story is that the "family friendly" version of Deadpool 2, Once Upon A Deadpool 2 opened big in China to push it back to number 2.

Deadpool 2

Glass

Remaining at the top for a second week the M. Night Shyamalan hit film took $42.6 million from 56 countries, this boosts its total global gross to $162.6 million meaning it will soon to the directors biggest film.

Deadpool 2

Released in much of the world over Christmas of 2018, hence the retitle to Once Upon A Deadpool 2, the re-cut version of the film hit China this week and $21.4 million opening, this takes the films total global gross to $767.6 million.

Extreme Job

The Chinese film was only released in the one terretory this week but still took $20 million taking it to number 3 on the global box office and the highest new film of the week.

Aquaman

The DC film reached another milestone this week as it is now the top grossing DC film ever beating The Dark Knight Rises from 2012.

A $15.1 million weekend from a massive 80 countries gives the film the fourth spot and takes the films total global gross to $1.09 Billion.

Creed II

The second Creed movie is doing better than the original movie and this week add $13.8 million from 45 countries to boosts its total gross to $190.9 million.

Still selling enough tickets to keep it on top for a third week is Dunkirk which holds off a strong debut from The Emoji Movie.

War film Dunkirk from director Christopher Nolan keeps pulling in the punters and stays on top for an incredible third weekend with a gross of £4.6 million.

This brings the films total to £28 million with no sign of slowing down yet, and with a weak load of new releases next week we could see a fourth weekend on top.

Coming in at number 2 this week is The Emoji Movie which takes a very good £2.7 million on its debut.

With the summer holidays in full swing this is a timely release and it could mean the film stays in the upper reaches of the chart for a while to come.

Big budget movie Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets from Luc Besson should have been a massive hit but we have a bit of a flop on our hands as the film debuts at number 3 with £1.8 million.

With 6 weeks on the chart Baby Driver is this week longest running film and with nearly £40 million in total grosses Despicable Me 3 is the highest total grossing film.

Lucasfilms and Disney have today firmed up some more details on their forth coming Star Wars films.

The first spin off film, directed by Gareth Edwards is called Rogue One and will be released worldwide on December 16th 2016.

Star Wars Episode VIII will be released May 26th 2017, not long after the previous Star Wars film.

Here is the full press release courtesy of starwars.com

ROGUE ONE IS THE FIRST STAR WARS STAND-ALONE FILM, RIAN JOHNSON TO WRITE AND DIRECT STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII THE TITLE FOR DIRECTOR GARETH EDWARDS' STAND-ALONE MOVIE, FEATURING ACTRESS FELICITY JONES, IS REVEALED, AND RIAN JOHNSON IS CONFIRMED FOR STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII -- COMING TO THEATERS MAY 26, 2017.

"Always in motion is the future," Yoda said. The future of the Star Wars cinematic galaxy, however, is taking shape.

This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 - forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema's most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including "Ozymandias," which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best instalment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

Continuing a year of superhero movies doing well at the box office, the much loved character of The Wolverine in his 5th film takes over at the top in the UK from Monsters University.

Hugh Jackman one again plays Wolverine in the tale set in modern day Japan, based on one of the best comic strip Wolverine stories. The Wolverine opens to £4.6 million which is lower than the previous stand alone Wolverine film which did £6.6 million.

Monsters University falls from the top this week after 3 weeks to number 2.

This time last year The Dark Knight Rises was still the top film with another fantastic week at the UK taking £7.2 million. The Lorax was the top new film, at 2 with £1.8 million.

Five years ago The Dark Knight burst into the top of the chart with £11.2 million knocking Mamma Mia! from the top while coming of age teen drama Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging was the new at 4.

Ten years ago The Hulk was still the top film with £1.3 million and animated tale Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas was the top new film with £800,000.

Fifteen years ago Godzilla was still the top film with £2.1 million and with a fairly static top 5 the highest new entry of the week was The Gingerbread Man at 7 with £171,120.

Another slow week at the UK box office as the British bask in the summer sun which resulted in small box office takings and Monsters University retaining the top spot.

10 days on release and a second weekend as the number one film in Great Britain Monsters University takes £2.7 million pushing it's total UK gross to £8.6 million.

Highest new film of the weekend is The Worlds End, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on a bender that sees the world end, directed by long time collaborator Edgar Wright.

The Worlds end took £2.1 million at the box office, much lower that I would have expected for an anticipated film, but like last weekend the weather has clearly kept people outside.

In accordance with my expectations The Worlds End didn't take the top spot from Monsters University, it was way off by nearly £700,000 and also the box office taking stayed quite stagnant, although with the summer holidays now upon us next week could be different.

Last year at this time The Dark Knight Rises took the box office by storm taking £14.3 million on it's opening weekend, knocking Ice Age Continental Drift from the top and also becoming the highest new film of the week.

Five years ago Mamma Mia! was still at the top slowly raking in the money, and also keeping Wall-E from debuting at the top, the Pixar film has to settle for number 2.

Ten years ago The Hulk starring Eric Bana and directed by Ang Lee debuted at the top knocking Charlie's Angels Full Throttle down to number 3.

Fifteen years ago Godzilla took the top spot on it's debut weekend from Six Days Seven Knights.
