Todd Phillips movie Joker stays at the top of the Uk box office for another weekend despite challengers from 3 new comers to the chart inside the top 5 with Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil by far the top grossing of the new movies.

Joker

The Joaquin Phoenix starring film about the Batman villain makes it a third week in a row at the top of the UK box offie with a take of a fantastic £5.5 Million.

This pushes the film total gross to £40.3 Million, far greater than expectation and its the 5th top grossing movie of 2019, it will overtake Captain Marvel by next weekend.

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil

The sequel movie from Disney starring Angelina Jolie makes its UK debut at number 3 with a fairly respectable weekend gross of £3.3 Million.

Compared to the original movie this is roughly half that films debut gross, but the UK bucks the trend of much of the world where the film seems to have bombed.

The film has got fairly bad reviews from critics which wont have helped, but the paying audiences have been more in favour, so in the coming weeks word of mouth might help.

A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

The new film from Aardman Animation come in at number 3 this week with a gross of £1.3 Million.

Again this is a sequel movie which has not done at well as the previous movie, Shaun The Sheep Movie, and come in a little better than half as the film took just over £2 Million on its debut.

Zombieland: Double Tap

Another sequel comes in at number 4, this time is a followup 10 years in the making as the new Zombieland film comes in with a debut gross of £1.2 Million.

The audience for zombie movies has clearly not changes as the original movie came in with an almost identical debut gross.

Abominable

Dreamworks animates tale falls to number 5 this week with a gross of a shade under £1 Million which puts the films total after 2 weeks at £3.2 Million.

Toy Story 4

Pixars animated sequel does the double this week as its the top total grossing movie with £66 Million and the longest total run at 18 weeks, its at number 15 this week so it could be the movies last weekend on the box office.

For a second weekend Marvels Captain Marvel is the top film on the box office with animated feature Wonder Park the highest new film of the week.

Wonder Park

Captain Marvel

The Marvel female led superhero movie does the double this week with a second weekend gross of $69.3 million keeping at the top of the box office.

This brings the films Brie Larson starring movie's total US gross to $266.2 million.

Wonder Park

Highest new film of the week is the animated feature Wonder Park directed by Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Robert Gordonwhich which enters at number 2 with a debut gross of $16 million.

Five Feet Apart

Also new this week is this drama from director Justin Baldoni which makes its debut at number 3 with $13.2 million over the weekend.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Still in the top 5 at number 4 this week the dragon threequel takes $9.3 million to boost its gross to $135.6 million.

A Madea Family Funeral

Rounding out the top 5 is Tyler Perrys hit comedy with his most popular creation Medea which takes $8 million this weekend boosting its total gross to $59 million.

For the second weekend IT reigned at the US box office, while the battle for highest new film went to American Assassin rather than Mother as some expected.

Grossing $60 million on its second weekend of release Warner Bros. have a true hit on their hands with IT, for a horror film, as it has been marketed, a 50% drop is fantastic.

This weekend gross takes the films total gross in the US to $218 million after 2 weekend of release, this should be enough to see the film go well over $300 million at the box office.

After much hype the Jennifer Lawrence starring Mother! could not beat American Assassin as the top new film, the former enters the chart at number 2 with $14.8 million.

Maybe this is a lesson for over hyped film as Assassin didn’t get nearly as much marketing dollars and yes outgrossed it 2 to 1 on their debuts.

Mother! did come in at number 3 with $7.5 million, although to put things into perspective IT at number 1 made more that the rest of the box office put together.

Once again Spider-Man Homecoming does the double whammy of longest running film with 11 weeks on the chart and highest total grossing movie with $330 million in US grosses to date.

Clint Eastwood is riding high on the wave of critical success and award success, and celebrates his Oscar nominated film by seeing it top the UK box office.

He now manages the double of having the top film in the UK and America at the same time, and if Oscar night is fruitful it could see American Sniper do some really big business.

This week the film, on it's 3rd week of release, takes £2.5 million giving it a UK total gross of £6.6 million, it's world gross is $252 million to date.

Tak3n falls from the top spot after 2 week in the position, a £1.8 million weekend brings it's total gross to £15,1million.

Ex Machina is the highest new film of the week at 5, a £1.1 million weekend is quite weak but the Alex Garland film has had really good reviews which could help it in future weeks.

Also new this week is: Mortdecai disappointingly at 7 and The Gambler at 8.

Historical charts

The Wolf of Wall Street was still holding onto the number 1 spot for another week while Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit was the highest new film at 3.

Fifteen years ago

This week in the UK Rio 2 makes the big step and flies to the top of the box office chart on it's debut weekend.

It was actually quite quiet this week and Rio 2 takes the crown with a relatively small £2.9 million. The sequel to 2011's Rio, the film enters the top just as the Easter holidays start so expect it to stay for a couple of week.
