Traditionally a quiet weekend in the US Kung Fu Panda 3 retains the top spot over the coveted Super-bowl weekend.

Panda 3 adds $21 million on its second weekend which is nearly a 50% drop from its debut its total gross in the US to $69 million.

The Cohen Brothers latest film Hail, Caesar! makes its debut at number 2 with $11.4 million.

The highest total grossing film on the US box office this week is Star Wars: The Force Awakens which has taken $905 million after 8 weeks of release, it will struggle to make $1 billion in the US on a single release but who knows?

Also new are The Choice at number 5 and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies at number 6.

There is no move at the top of the UK video chart this week as Disney's Cinderella keeps a tight hold of the number 1 spot for a second week. Highest new film is at number 2, a DTV (direct to video) film about the Kray brothers called Rise of the Krays.

Released to coincide with the cinematic release of Legend starring Tom Hardy as the twin brothers. Rise of the Krays stars Simon Cotton and Kevin Leslie as the twins and documents their early life before their infamy as gangsters.

The film was released in 16th May 2015 but made no impact on the box office.

Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation stays the top film across the globe for another week although in comparison it is released in 63 countries whereas Straight Outta Compton shows strong figures from America alone.

Rogue Nation takes $63 million globally this week and is starting to slow down, it's global take is now $373.4 which should put it ahead of part 3 but it will struggle to beat the others.

Compton makes an impressive debut at number 2 with $56 million from America alone, it gets released across the globe in the coming weeks but its home territory is where the audience is.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. makes it's debut this week at number 3 from 24 countries with $25.5 million, it will be seen as a disappointment.

Lucasfilms and Disney have today firmed up some more details on their forth coming Star Wars films.

The first spin off film, directed by Gareth Edwards is called Rogue One and will be released worldwide on December 16th 2016.

Star Wars Episode VIII will be released May 26th 2017, not long after the previous Star Wars film.

Here is the full press release courtesy of starwars.com

ROGUE ONE IS THE FIRST STAR WARS STAND-ALONE FILM, RIAN JOHNSON TO WRITE AND DIRECT STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII THE TITLE FOR DIRECTOR GARETH EDWARDS' STAND-ALONE MOVIE, FEATURING ACTRESS FELICITY JONES, IS REVEALED, AND RIAN JOHNSON IS CONFIRMED FOR STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII -- COMING TO THEATERS MAY 26, 2017.

Always in motion is the future, Yoda said. The future of the Star Wars cinematic galaxy, however, is taking shape.

This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema's most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including Ozymandias, which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

Clint Eastwood is riding high on the wave of critical success and award success, and celebrates his Oscar nominated film by seeing it top the UK box office.

He now manages the double of having the top film in the UK and America at the same time, and if Oscar night is fruitful it could see American Sniper do some really big business.

This week the film, on it's 3rd week of release, takes £2.5 million giving it a UK total gross of £6.6 million, it's world gross is $252 million to date.

Tak3n falls from the top spot after 2 week in the position, a £1.8 million weekend brings it's total gross to £15,1million.

Ex Machina is the highest new film of the week at 5, a £1.1 million weekend is quite weak but the Alex Garland film has had really good reviews which could help it in future weeks.

Also new this week is: Mortdecai disappointingly at 7 and The Gambler at 8.
