The hype around Captain Marvel has been intense and there was little doubt this weekend that the first female led Marvel stand alone movie would do massive business at the US box office.
The new marvel movie starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson trampled all in its path on the US box office with a magnificent $153 million opening from a record breaking 4,310 screens.
In America this is the third biggest March opening with only the live action Beauty and the Beast and Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice doing better.
The road ahead looks good for the Marvel superhero and the $1 billion mark looks a sure thing.
Understandably falling from the top spot in the light of major competition the threequel dragon movie took $14.6 million over the weekend.
This brings the films total US gross to a very good $119.6 million.
Tyler Perry's Madea movie falls to 3 this week with $12.05 million which pushes the films total gross after 2 weeks of release to $45.8 million.
The sequel brick movie falls to 4 this week with $3.8 million to bring its total to $97.1 million.
The animation should pass the $100 million mark but it is well below the originals $257 million US gross.
Still in the top 5 is the Battle Manga movie which this week pulls in $3.2 million for a $78.3 million total gross.
With the release of a new film from JK Rowlings Wizarding World there was no doubt it would dominate the world on its debut, but worrying for Warner Bros. it is the lowest opening for a film from the fantasy world.
Opening into a very wide 80 countries the latest film from the author and universe that brought us Harry Potter takes $253.2 million on its debut week.
Despite the strong opening across the world this was still lower that the first Fantastic Beasts film and the lowest of any film from the Harry Potter Wizarding World.
The Freddy Mercury film continues to do well across the globe and this week sits at number 2 with $61 million taken from 79 countries.
The Sony villain movie is still getting a boost from its second wind since its release in China and this week falls to 3 with $57 million from 66 countries.
The Dr Seuss film is doing well in the US and UK which is keeping the film at number 4 this week with $47.5 million taken from just 24 countries.
The Steve McQueen directed movie gets a boost from its North American release and enters the top 5 with a weekly gross of $15 million from 20 countries.
Just missing out on a place in the top 5 this week is Mark Wahlberg's latest film which still manages to enter the global box office at 6 with $14.7 million from a single country.
Despite the less than favourable reviews The Predator takes the top spot on its debut weekend in the UK knocking horror film The Nun down to number 2.
The sixth film in the Predator franchise (including the 2 cross over films with the Alien franchise) takes £2.3 million on its opening weekend which is in the same ball park of the previous film Predators from 2010.
The film will most likely have most of its business in this first weekend so expect the film to drop considerably on its second weekend.
Falling to number 2 this week is The Nun which takes £1.8 million on its second weekend of release which brings the films total gross to £7.7 million.
New at number 3 is the US smash hit Crazy Rich Asians, although the film doesn't seem to be repeating the same success in the UK.
There was an expectation that the film would top the box office but with a £1.6 million opening this is only good enough for a top 3 debut.
Michael Cains new film King Of Thieves enters the chart at number 4 with a £1.5 million debut.
The star has been in some big movies over the last 20 years which have had massive debuts but for a lesser known film this is a good debut, no doubt increased by his star power.Finishing off the top 5 is former number 1 film Christopher Robin which takes £521,842 this week, this brings the films total gross after 5 weeks to £13 million.
With very good reviews from critics, good pre launch buzz and part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe there was never any doubt that Thor: Ragnarok was going to have a huge debut at the US box office.
That debut came in to the tune of $121 million which means the film starring Chris Hemsworth is the 7th biggest opening for an MCU film.
To round out the number its also the 17th number one film from the Disney series and the 8th which has delivered a $100 million plus opening, it beats Spiderman Homecoming from earlier this year.
With Thor out of the way last weeks halloween hit Jigsaw, as expected, falls hard this week and ends up at number 3 with $6.7 million, its total US gross now sits just below $30 million.
Also new on the US box office this week is A Bad Moms Christmas, maybe a little early for to be thinking of the Christmas season but the film makes a very impressive debut at 2 with $17 million.
Longest running film on the US top 10 is Blade Runner 2040 which clocks up 5 weeks and with its impressive $122 million debut Thor Ragnarok is the highest grossing movie on the chart, it has been a very slow second half to the year, until now!
There was never any doubt that the highly anticipated new Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049, was going to top the box office, but expectation were a little higher than was achieved.
Starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford the film has garnered fantastic reviews with a true sequel storyline and fantastic cinematography.
With a debut gross of just over $31 million on an expectation of $50 million maybe the sci-fi epic was a little too much for movie goers.
Falling to number 3 this week is last weeks top film IT which takes just shy of $10 million on its 6th weekend of release for a total US gross of $304 million.
Coming in at number 2 is The Mountain Between Us starring Kate Winslet and Idris Alba with a US weekend gross of $10 million.
Also new this week is animated film My Little Pony with an $8 million debut.
It is the longest longest running film and well os t he top total grossing film on the top 10 this week.
