News from around the web

Maybe the reception was a little more muted than Warner Bros. would have liked but Godzilla: King Of The Monsters still makes its debut at number 1 on the US box office.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

The sequel to 2014's Godzilla hits the US box office at the top with a weekend gross of $49 million which compared to the original is nearly half its $93 million debut.

Warner have big plans for the monster series and this is maybe a warning shot that the western movie fan is not as interested as those in China for example where the film had a monster opening.

The film is also lower than 2017's Kong: Skull Island and with a Kong and Godzilla matchup coming in 2020 there are warning signs.

Disneys live action remake starring Will Smith falls to number 2 this week with $42.3 million which gives the film a $185 million total gross after 2 weeks.

Making its debut at number 3 this week is the Elton John bio-pic which takes a respectable $25 million.

The films cinema run will be compared to Bohemian Rhapsody, although this film has debuted far lower than the Freddy Mercury film despite having better reviews.

Starring Octavia Spencer this suspense horror makes its debut at number 4 with a fairly muted $18.2 million opening.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

Falling to the number 5 spot after 3 weeks of release is the Keanu Reeves action films which takes $11.1 million for a $125.7 million total.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel movie is the top total gross film on the US box office this week and after 6 weeks has taken an incredible $815.5 million.

Despite being a smaller hit than Disney are used to the Tim Burton live action movie remake has been on the US box office for 10 weeks and has taken $113.7 million.

Entering at the top of the global box office this week Monster movie Godzilla: King Of The Monsters which leaves Aladdin to have a single week at number 1 (so far) as it falls to number 2 in its second weekend.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

The big monster battle movie starring the Japanese superhero Godzilla fights its way to the top of the global box office this week, and does it with some ease.

Taking $179 million from 76 countries on its debut it may be at the top of the global box office but compared to the previous Godzilla movie released in 2014 it way below.

Godzilla is having a battle with King Kong early next year so in comparison this film is also lower than 2017's Kong: Skull Island.

The Disney live action blockbuster flew to the top of the box office last weekend but sinks to number 2 this week with $120.6 million from 55 countries.

This pushes the film total global gross to $445.9 million after 2 weeks of release.

With the films release across more of the globe the Elton John fantasy bio-pic goes to number 3 with a weekend global take of $44.2 million having expanded to 41 countries.

The film now has a global total gross of $56.2 million, in comparison this is far below the second weekend gross of Bohemian Rhapsody.

At number 4 this week is Chinese film Parasite which makes its global debut with $24.5 million from just 2 countries.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The third John Wick movie falls to number 4 this week with a gross of $23.8 million from 78 countries, this pushes the films total global gross to $221.6 million.

On this weeks UK box office Disney brings its live action remake of Aladdin to the box office, directed by our very own Guy Ritchie, which scores a big number 1 debut, in a weekend with an all new top 3, this leaves Rocketman and The Secret Life Of Pets 2 to enter at 2 and 3.

The latest in the increasing line of live action remakes enters the UK box office, with ease, at the top.

The film starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud as the Genie and Aladdin takes over at the top with a £7 million debut.

This is by no means as good as 2017's Beauty And The Beast which has an opening weekend of £19 million but it is higher than this years Dumbo.

The Elton John fantasy bio-pic manages to take a fantastic £5.4 million on its debut weekend, but unfortunately released the same day as a Disney movie it only manages a number 2 debut.

The film Directed Dexter Fletcher and Starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell has wowed critics and if it repeats a similar course as Bohemian Rhapsody it will hand around a while and could still hit the top of the box office.

The Freddy Mercury film debuted to nearly £10 million and went on to take £55 million in the UK, I dont think this will repeat those figures.

The Secret Life Of Pets 2

Third new film in the top three and again under normal weekend conditions this would have been the top film but a £3.5 million debut this week means it hits number 3.

Compared to the first movie in the series this is actually way lover with that film taking nearly £10 million on its debut, but with the school holidays just around the corner this could have a long life.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The Keanu Reeves action movie falls from the top to number 4 on its second weekend of release with £1.4 million boosting its total to £6.2 million.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Three weeks on and the Pikachu movie is at 5 with £1 million over the weekend, this gives the film a new total of £10 million.

Avengers: Endgame

Falling out of the top 5 fir the first time this week the Marvel movie has now taken £85.5 million in the UK over 5 weeks.

It is the 5th top movie of all time in the UK where it will probably remain, behind Avatar, Spectre, Skyfall and Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Making an entry back into the top 15 after a time away the brick movie takes £43,254 on its 9th weekend which boosts its total to £18.6 million.

Hitting the US box office this week is the Disney live action remake of the 1992 animated movie Aladdin which makes its debut on top this week knocking John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum to number 2 after spending a single week at the top.

With Will Smith in a starring role as the Genie in this Disney live action remake it was never going to be a flop but early trailers got fans worried, they had nothing to worry about as the film gets a good critical response on release.

The film also stars Mena Massoud as the title character with the like of Naomi Scott also starring, the film is directed by Guy Ritchie.

On its debut weekend, which is also Memorial Day in the US, the film manages a fantastic $86.1 million, $112 million if you include the holiday Monday as well.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

Having made its debut at the top last week the Keanu Reeves starring film falls to 2 this week with $24.3 million.

This pushes the films total US gross to $101 million.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel film falls to 3 this week after 5 weeks of release but is still pulling in the audience with a $16.8 million gross.

This brings the films total gross to $798.1 million and the film is the second highest grossing film ever in the US, it will not go any higher.

Pokeacute;mon: Detective Pikachu

The live action film based on the Nintendo franchise falls to 4 this week but after 3 weeks it takes $13.3 million and pushes its total to $116.1 million.

New from director David Yarovesky is this new take on the super hero idea this is produced by Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn.

The film starring Elizabeth Banks and David Denman takes $7.5 million on its debut.

Disney continue their remaking, and updating, of classic animations with a live action version of the 1992 Aladdin which easily tops the global box office on its debut weekend.

Starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud and directed by the underated British director Guy Ritchie the Disney film tops the global box office with $207.1 million.

this is far better than expected and although not as good as the Disney remake of Beauty And The Beast sits up there with the best of the recent run of live action films.

After the film got criticised after the first trailer, especially Will Smith's Genie, there were fears it would bomb, but critics and audience have likes the film and the box office future looks promising.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

After a very successful opening last week the Keanu Reeves starring film falls to number 2 this week with $49.1 million over the weekend.

This pushes the films total global gross to $175.3 million and the biggest John Wick film.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

The live version of the Nintendo creatures falls to 3 this week with $37.6 million pushing its total gross to $352.9 million and by far the most successful Pokémon film so far.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel movie falls to 4 this weekend with $32.2 million which pushes the films total global gross to $2.7 Billion.

Its starting to look less like the film will beat the $2.78 Billion of Avatar but there is still hope and with a small push from Disney who knows.

New at 5 this week is this alternative take on the super hero story from director David Yarovesky and produced by Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn.

Starring Elizabeth Banks and David Denman curiosity has given the film a $12 million opening weekend.
