ADVERTISMENT

The was a battle at the top of the Uk box office this week between The Hitmans Bodyguard and Dunkirk and with a gap of less than £50,000 Bodyguard won.

The comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson took £1.9 million on its debut weekend to reach the top, this is the lowest opening for a film to reach number 1 since Billy Elliot The Musical Live took the top spot in September 2014.

This means that the total gross for the top 15 films is also at a low with just £10 million taken.

Falling from the top is Dunkirk, although it held on tight and in the end lost to by a narrow margin taking to second place with £1.8 million.

Dunkirk is still showing strong figures from the week and took £4 million Monday - Sunday to brings its total to nearly £50 million, it is easily the second top grossing film of 2017.

Interestingly the Monday - Sunday figures puts The Hitmans Bodyguard at number 4 with Annabelle Creation and The Emoji Movie coming second and third.

Highest grossing film on the UK box office this week is Dunkirk while the longest running film is Despicable Me 3 with 8 weeks on the chart, its currently number 6.

Historical charts

Finding Dory Went back to the top of the box office knocking Suicide Squad to number 2 while David Brent Life On The Road was the top new film at 3.

Five years ago
After a limited launch seeing it reach number 6 then number 5 Brave reached the top when it went wide on its third week, it knocked off Ted to number 3, The Bourne Legacy was the top new film at 2.

Ten years ago
The Bourne Ultimatum was the top new film of the week at number 1, it knocked off Rush Hour 3 to number 3.

Fifteen years ago
Men In Black II remained at the top of the box office for a third weekend while the top new film was The Sum of All Fears at number 2.

Twenty years ago
Men in Black remained at the top for a third weekend while the top new film was Speed 2 Cruise Control at number 3.

Twenty five years ago
Lethal Weapon 4 was the top new film of the week making its debut at the top while Far And Away fell to number 2.

This week was the global release of the latest Bourne movie which saw it dominate the box office with its wide release in 47 counties.

America led the way and create just over half of the global box box office gross for the movie, the total was 110 million, far greater the last film in the series The Bourne Legacy.

This is a good start for the fifth film in the series and fourth starring Matt Damon and with positive reviews it should see the film gross some impressive numbers.

Falling from the top is Star Trek Beyond, which like its predecessor had a strong opening weekend but a heavy second frame.

The film took $37 million this week from 41 countries to bring its total gross to $160.5 million, and with much of the films gross bound to be front loaded this could mean trouble for the franchise.

Also new this week is League Of Gods at number 5 which has an impressive launch from 7 countries for a $30 million opening week.

Highest total grossing movie on the top 10 global box office this week is Finding Dory which has now taken $469 million.

The global top five looks like this.

  1. Jason Bourne - $110,142,540
  2. The Secret Life Of Pets - $47,712,325
  3. Star Trek Beyond - $37,000,000
  4. Ice Age: Collision Course - $30,000,000
  5. League Of Gods - $30,000,000

This weekend in the US we see Star Trek toppled from the top of the box office after only a week and Jason Bourne come storing into its place.

Nine years after Matt Damon left the series, and four years after the last movie Jason Bourne, directed by Paul Greengrass, is the top film in America.

The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner wasn't that well received in America taking just $113 million but The Bourne Ultimatum, the last film staring Damon, was and took $227 million.

This new chapter takes $60 million on its debut so if off to a good start and will join the top grossing movies in the series.

Star Trek Beyond falls from the top after only a week taking $24 million on its second weekend on release and grosses $105.7 million after 10 days.

Also new this week is Bad Moms starring Mila Kunis at number 3 and Nerve starring Emma Roberts at number 8.

Longest run on the box office and highest total grossing movie this week is Finding Dory, 7 weeks and $469 million.

Alan Partridge Alpha Papa was only strong enough for a single week at the top and this week we have, for a second week, an all new top 3 with Kick-Ass 2 leading the way.

The superhero film, the follow up to 2010's Kick-Ass, takes the top spot with a weekend box office of £2.4 million, in comparison to it's predecessor which has an early April release instead, it's over a million lower, Kick-Ass making £3.8 million on it's opening.

Also opening strong in the top 3 are Disney's Planes and the US hit 2 Guns with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg at 2 and 3 respectively.

Making a massive tumble at the box office is Alan Partridge, who falls to 7 this week with £852,967 after a fairly successful debut last week.

This time last year Brave was still at the top and doing big numbers holding off The Bourne Legacy which opened in second place.

Five years ago The Dark Knight went back to the top of the box office in it's fourth week of release, the highest new release was the Adam Sandler comedy You Don't Mess with the Zohan, hairdressing at it's best!

Ten years ago American Pie: The Wedding was debuting at the top knocking off Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl after a single week.

Fifteen years ago Bruce Willis was still stopping astroids at hte top with Armageddon while the British The Avengers (not to be mistaken with the superhero film) was the highest new film at 3.

After being around on limited release for a couple of weeks, Brave tops the UK box office in it's first week nationwide.

Giving up the top spot this week Ted falls to third place as the whole country gets a chance to see Pixar/Disneys latest film. The scottish set animation had already taken a couple of million pounds from 2 weeks of release on 150 screen, but expanding to over 500 screens sees the film take £5,269,402 this weekend. Brave has taken £8,270,546 in total.

Highest new film of the week is The Bourne Legacy, the first without Matt Damon in the lead, it has debuted with £4,620,289.

A year ago the Channel 4 show based The Inbetweeners Movie smashed it's way to the top of the UK box office with £13,216,736 making it the top film and highest new film.

Five years ago The Bourne Ultimatum took the top slot and was the highest new film with a weekend take of £6,553,704.

Ten years ago Men in Black II was still at the top having taken a a weekend gross of £1,403,344 and total gross of £16,174,430.

Fifteen years ago the original Men in Black was at the top while twenty years ago Lethal Weapon 3 was the big movie.
