The US box office has just passed the $2 Billion mark, its November, for the past few years this has happened in March.

When the pandemic spread around the world, cinemas globally started closing down, in the US this is still ongoing.

This biggest movie of the year in the US is Bad Boys For Life which has taken over $204 Million in the US, and no film will overtake that total this year, the film was released in January of 2020 and had a good run at the box office.

In context of this the biggest movie in the US was Avengers: Endgame which took over $850 Million.

Cinema Closed

To start with all blockbusters started putting their release dates to later in the year or to 2021, but as it became clear that the pandemic would last far longer than originally expected movies started to appear on streaming services.

The effect of this is all those big Hollywood blockbusters that could have, and would have, grossed close a billion either took far less on basically limited release, or nothing due to a DVOD release.

Tenet

Tenet was the first movie with blockbuster potential to be release during the pandemic and although it grossed over $50 Million in the US it was a potential $800 million plus grosser.

Drive-in theatres gave a small lifeline but even a blockbuster in this arena was worth just over a Million.

With a vaccine being likely by year out to hopefully go into mass production for 2021 we can hope that 2020 will go down in history as a one off, although with companies like Disney suggesting it will release future movies on Disney+ as exclusives or day and date releases it could be bad news for the cinema industry.

With no major releases over the last weekend the horror comedy Freaky remained at the top of the US box office for a second weekend.

The highest entry on the chart was the re-release of 1995's The Santa Clause from Disney while the highest new movie of the week was Vanguard at number 7.

Also new this week is The Last Vermeer at number 9 and Gekijouban Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel - III. Spring Song at number 10, while outside the top 10 Buddy Games came in at 13 and The Forgotten Carols at number 15.

As predicted with the surge in COVID-19 cases in the US, the big movie of the holiday season, Wonder Woman 1984, will debut on steaming and cinema on the same day.

The Patty Jenkins directed movie will get the duel release in the US with no word yet on if the Boxing Day release in the UK is changing or a streaming option will be in place as well.

Wonder Woman 1984 HBO Max confirmation

The movie has been changed from earlier in 2020 to later in 2020 a couple of time finally settling for a Christmas release.

With COVID-19 cases on the increase in the US and the UK on a lockdown until early December Warner Bros. have decided to dual release it.

With a vaccine almost imminent this could be perhaps the last big film to get this type of release, altohugh with Universal seemingly a fan of short release windows who know, but thats a story for another day.

Can we say cinemas as we know and love it has died yet?

**UPDATE** It looks like the UK release has been brought forward and will be released in cinemas on December 16th.

The UK box office did better this week than last but its still relying on a handful of cinemas open in Scotland and Wales during the English lockdown, and The Secret Garden makes an incredible leap to the top.

Highest new movie of the week is the documentary Billie at number 2 while there is also a re-entry from War Horse Nation Theatre Live from 2014.

The only other top new movie of the week is director Andrew Cohn's The Last Shift which enters at number 14 with £501, Mogul Mowgli climbs up the chart to number 13 this week with £505 which is a 94% increase from last weekend.
