UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 26th - 28th November 2021

House of Gucci

Hitting the top on its debut weekend the movie stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver in this true life drama brought to us by maverick director Ridley Scott.

The movie tops the box office with a debut gross of £2.4 Million, the lowest debut since Free Guy back in August 2021.

Although compared to director Ridley Scotts last movie, which also starred Adam Drive, The Last Duel it is far higher as that movie surprisingly underperformed.

The movie has a long way to go in order to beat Lady Gaga's last movie which was the 2018 A Star is Born which took over £30 Million at the UK box office.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Falling to number 2 after a single week at the top is the Ghostbusters sequel which takes just over £2 Million on its second weekend of release, a 51% drop over its debut gross.

This puts the movies total at £7.5 Million which puts it on almost the same footing at the 2016 re-boot, if maybe a little higher.

Encanto

Disney bring their latest animated feature to the big screen only, and unlike the rest of the world where it is the top movie it lands on the UK box office at number 3.

The movie makes its debut with £1.7 Million which is far better than their previous animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon which took less than a million but that was during the pandemic.

Their previous movie to that was Frozen II which made its debut in 2019 with over £15 Million, but this is a new IP and that has a massive built in audience, in all this is not great for a Disney labeled animation.

Eternals

Disney again, this time with their Marvel studios as the Chloe Zhao directed feature falls to number 4 with £586,304, a 52% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £13.8 Million and it is the 10th top movie of 2021.

No Time To Die

The 25th James Bond movie falls to number 5 this weekend with £492,635, a 48% drop over last week which isn't bad for a movie which is 9 weeks on the box office.

The film has now taken £95.5 Million at the UK box office and it takes the honor this week of slipping up to number 3 on the list of all UK time movies having Jumped over Spectre this week.

To go any higher it needs to break the £100 Million mark, a feat only achieved by 2 movies on the UK, Skyfall and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but its probably a feat too far for this movie.

New Disney movie Encanto is the top new movie of the weekend globally as it makes its debut with an impressive debut while House of Gucci also impresses with a number 3 new entry.

Just outside the top 5 Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is new at number 6 with a $10.3 Million opening weekend.

The Marvel movie from director Chloe Zhao drop to number 2 this weekend after a couple of weeks at the top with a gross of £1.2 Million, a 58% drop over last weekend.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Director Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, brings a true sequel to Ghostbusters to the screen and hits the top of the global box office on its debut week of release with $60 Million from 32 countries.

The movie has has a mixed reception from critics but audiences seem to love the return of the franchise and it has hot the top spot in most of the countries it has been released in.

The movie has some very stiff competition going forward, but for now this return of the beloved franchise has hit the right mark and will probably green light another in the franchise.

Eternals

Marvels latest movie falls to number 2 after 2 weeks at the top with a weekend gross of $33.5 Million from 50 countries on its third weekend of release, a 56% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a global total of $336.1 Million over its 3 weeks making it the 10th top movie of 2021.

Be Somebody

The Chinese movie is still only available in the single country and this weekend stays at number 3 with a gross of $23.6 Million, a 17% increase over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total global gross of $20.3 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Door Lock

Again released only in China this drama from director Orkenbek Baysenbay makes its debut with $19.9 Million and is the fourth top movie of the weekend.

No Time To Die

The James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig falls to number 5 this week from number 2 with a weekend gross of $16.1 Million from 73 countries, a resonable 44% drop over last weekend.

Despite the large drop on he box office the movie has taken $734 Million over its 8 weeks of release and is the 3rd top movie globally of 2021.

the movie does pass a big milestone this weekend, is is the highest grossing English speaking movie of 2021 overtaking Fast & Furious 9 and is only behind the massive Chinese blockbusters of Hi, Mom at number 2 and The Battle At Lake Changjin which is the top movie of the year.

Marvel's Eternals spends a second weekend on top of the UK box office in a week where there are no new releases making an impact on the box office with the biggest mover being the Princess Diana film Spencer which jumps up to the top 5 on its second week.

Top new movie of the weekend is Mothering Sunday directed by Eva Husson and featuring Olivia Coleman and Colin Firth among its cast, it enters at number 1 with £156,940 while the Clint Eastwood western Cry Macho makes its UK debut at 15 with £72,130.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Eternals (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Mothering Sunday (@11)
  • Longest run - No Time To Die (7 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time To Die (£92.7 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 12th - 14th November 2021

Eternals

Staying at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend the Marvel Studios movie takes £2.9 Million, a reasonable 47% drop over last weekend.

This drop is better than Marvels other 2021 movie Black Widow which dropped a massive 74% on its second weekend, but it was on Disney+ as well, but worse than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which only dropped 38%, but there was pent up cinema demand at the time.

The movie has taken £10.5 Million over its 2 weeks of release which is actually comparable to the other 2021 Marvel movies, but with the hype for Spider-Man: No Way Home going beyond fever pitch that movies mid December release could effect the final few weeks box office for this Chloe Zhao directed movie.

Still for a movie which has fairly unfavourable review it will end up with a £20 Million+ total UK gross which is not bad for a new IP.

No Time To Die

Daniel Craigs final Bond outing stays put at number 2 this weekend with a gross of £1.5 Million, a very slim 21% on its 7th weekend of release, which could be down to people finally deciding its safe to go back to cinemas and not wanting to miss the big screen experience.

The movie has taken a massive £92.7 Million in the UK and it will end up as the top movie of 2021, I don't think even Spider-Man: No Way Home can beat this, and with the movie coming out so late in the year much of its take will be in 2022.

The movie is still the 5th top movie of all time in the UK, but it should be able to take Avatar by next weekend and settle under Spectre and Skyfall on the top 5 UK movies of all time, it will most likely struggle to get over £100 Million in the UK though.

Dune

Remaining at number 3 this weekend is director Denis Villeneuve take on the classic schi-fi noval which takes £1.7 Million over the weekend, again a very slim drop of only 24%.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £18.9 Million and the 4th top movie of 2021 as it prepares to overtake Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway at number 3.

The movie is now the top grossing movie in the UK for the celebrated director having just overtaken the UK gross of 2017's Blade Runner 2049.

Spencer

The bio-pic of Princess Diana goes on wider release and climbs to number 4 on the box office with £698,065, a 29% increase over last weekend where it debuted at number 6.

The movie starring Kristen Stewart as the late Princess has taken £1.5 Million in the UK after 2 weeks.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business

Staying put at number 5 this weekend is the animated sequel which takes £574,218 on its 4th weekend, a very small 5% drop, giving the movie a total in the UK of £6.4 Million.
