  • UK box office tp 5 breakdown weekend 23rd - 25th July 2021

    Black Widow

The Marvel Cinematic Universe origins movie remains at the top of the UK box office for a third straight weekend this week taking £1.4 Million, a slim 22% drop over last weekend.

This pushes the movies total gross over its three weekends to £13.8 Million, for obvious reasons its one of the lowest grossing movies from the Mavel/Disney collaboration but it is one of the top movies of 2021 in the UK at number 3 which is good and where you would expect it to be.

To remain at the top of the chart next weekend is a big ask with Disney releasing Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and Warner releasing The Suicide Squad from director James Gunn.

    Space Jam: A New Legacy

Destined to always be the runner up to Black Widow the toon and real life hybrid takes £1.3 Million over the weekend which is actually a 2% increase over last weekend, this can be contributed to the UK school summer holidays.

This gives the movie a 2 weekend total gross of £3.6 Million, comparing to the original Space Jam movie and taking the pandemic into consideration this is still low.

    The Croods: A New Age

A dissipating debut last weekend was a bit misleading for the toon sequel as it moved up to number 4 this weekend with £876,123, a 20% increase over last weekend, again contribute this to the school summer holidays.

This gives the movie a 2 weekend gross of £2.05 Million.

    Old

Director M. Night Shyamalan brings us his latest mystery movie with a twist and unlike its debut at the top in America it has to contend with a new entry at number 4.

This is the highest new entry of the weekend, one which is really geared towards a teen to younger audience, but the movie takes £866,860 on its debut.

    The Forever Purge

Falling to number 5 this weekend is the fifth movie in The Purge franchise which takes £598,803, a 17% drop, for a 2 weekend total of £1.8 Million.

It's all change again at the top of the US box office as 2 new entries are in the top 2 position, highest of the two is the new movie from director M. Night Shyamalan Old which hits the top.

The second of the two top releases is the new G.I. Joe movie Snake Eyes which come in at number 2.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Old (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Old (@1)
  • Longest run - A Quiet Place Part II (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - A Quiet Place Part II ($157.5 Million)

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 23rd - 25th July 2021

Old

The new movie from director M. Night Shyamalan makes its debut at the top of the US box office this weekend with a gross of $16.5 Million.

The famed directors top movie in America is still The Sixth Sense from 1999 and with the current pandemic and cinema closures it wont come anywhere near that, but his lowest grossing is The Lady In the Water at $42.2 Million and although a struggle it could come close to that!

Snake Eyes

The new movie from the G.I Joe series of movies is an origins film and comes in at number 2 with $13.3 Million.

This movie had a lot of hype and its perhaps a disappointment that it came in at number 2, but Old had good word of mouth and this movie got hit hard by the critics, and I dont think there was much of an appetite for it!

Black Widow

Falling to number 3 this weekend is the latest Marvel movie which this week takes $11.6 Million, 56% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 3 week total gross of $154.8 Million, and its the 3rd top grossing movie of 2021 in America but its maybe lower than expected, it has the pandemic to content with and it is also available on Disney+ with an extra fee, and it wont be long before its available without the extra fee, also Marvel are doing very well on Disney+ with WandaVision, The Falcom and The Winter Soldier and Loki all having been big hits.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Falling to number 4 from the top this week is the Space Jam sequel which has a second weekend gross of $9.5 Million, a large 70% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $51.3 Million and the prospect of disappearing out of the box office in the next couple of weeks, on a positive note it is the 8th top movie in America in 2021 so far.

Fast & Furious 9

The lastest The Fast Sage movie is sinking fast at the box office and this week takes $4.7 Million, 38% down from last weekend.

This gives the car movie a $163.3 Million total over 5 weeks of release, it is the top grossing movie in America of 2021 so far taking over from A Quiet Place Part II this weekend but this is most likely the last weekend in the top 5.

The Chinese box office showed its strength again this week as the top new movie globally is Green Snake which only got a release in the single terretory.

Also making its debut this week is the new movie from M. Night Shyamalan, Old, which comes in at 3 while outside the top 5 is Snake Eyes which is new at 6 with $17.3 Million.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Green Snake (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Green Snake (@1)
  • Longest run - Fast & Furious 9 (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Fast & Furious 9 ($621.2 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 23rd - 25th July 2021

The Chinese box office has continued to do well during the pandemic and this movie continues that run of global hits.

Falling to number 2 this week is the latest Marvel movie which takes $26.1 Million, a large 54% drop, from 49 countries.

The movie now has a total global gross of $314.9 Million after 3 weeks of release and is the 5th top grossing movie globally of 2021.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Falling to number 4 this week is the Space Jam sequel which takes $22.1 Million, a big 59% drop over last week, from 67 countries.

The movie has now taken $93.9 Million after 3 weeks of release and should break the $100 Million before next weekend.

Another movie which is only released in China and has been a big global hit, this week taking $17.3 Million, a 60% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken $175.6 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Black Widow and Space Jam 2 fought it out for the top spot this weekend with the Marvel MCU movie coming out on top and remaining at number 1 for a second weekend.

Black Widow

The Scarlett Johansson starring movie remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend with £1.8 Million, a quite large 74% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £11.2 Million after 2 weeks of release and its the fourth top grossing movie of 2021 so far.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Making its debut at number 2 this weekend is the sequel movie to 1996's Space Jam which took £1.3 Million over the weekend.

Compared to the original its far lower as the 1996 original took £4.6 Million on it's debut weekend, its a little unfair considering the global pandemic, but I would have thought this movie would have taken less regardless.

The Forever Purge

The fifth movie in the long running series makes its debut at number 3 with £720,032.

The highest grossing movie in the series is 2018's The First Purge which took £1.7 Million on its debut.

The Croods: A New Age

Another sequel hitting the box office this weekend is the animated sequel starring Nicolas Cage which makes its debut at number 4 with £696,563.

The original movie, The Croods was released in 2013 and took £5.3 Million on its debut, even considering the pandemic this is a disappointing debut for the sequel.

Fast & Furious 9

The ninth Fast movie falls to number 5, from 2, on its 4th weekend of release with a gross of £446,126, a large 59% drop.

This movie seems to be sinking faster than expected and after 4 weeks has taken £14.14 Million, although it is currently the second top grossing movie of 2021.

It may be 25 years after the original but sequel movie Space Jam: A New Legacy top the US box office on its debut weekend removing Black Widow after a single week at the top.

Elsewhere on the US box office chart Escape Room: Tournament of Champions makes its debut at 3 and Nicholas Cage stars in Pig which is new at 10 with $945,000.

US box office QuickView

  • Highest total gross - A Quiet Place Part II ($155 Million)

US box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 18th July 2021

Space Jam: A New Legacy

25 years after the original movie which starred Micheal Jordon as the pro basketball player in a toon world comes the sequel which replaces Jordan for LeBron James, and the movie its the top spot on its debut.

The movie took $31.6 Million on its debut, comparisons to the original movie are irrelevant considering we are still in a pandemic and it was 25 years ago but Spance Jam made its debut with $27.5 Million at he end of 1996.

Black Widow

The MCU return to box office last a week at the top (so far) as the Scarlett Johansson starring movie srop to number 2 with $26.2 Million, a 67% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $132 Million over 2 weekends and is the third top movie of 2021 in North America.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

Making its debut at number 3 this weekend is a sequel movie which has had little buzz, Escape Room was released in 2019 and took a decent $57 Million over its US run.

The Adam Robitel directed sequel makes its debut with $8.8 Million.

Fast & Furious 9

Falling to number 4 this weekend is The Fast Saga's latest instalment which takes $7.6 Million, a slim 20% drop from last weekend, for a total os $154.8 Million after 4 weeks, and the second top movie of 2021.

The Boss Baby 2

Animated movies have done well during the pandemic but this movie seems to have been overlooked by audiences as the sequel movie falls to 5 with a gross of $7.6 Million, a 30% drop, giving it $154.8 Million after 4 weeks of release.
