As you would expect the saviour of cinema is still the top movie of the week, and unlike last weekend Warner Bros. have released more accurate figures for the weekend gross this time.

Last weekend Warner Bros. only released the total gross for the movie, which included 7 days extra of Canadian release and preview figures for the American release, although to be honest this is nothing new!

Further down the box office list the top 3 movies stay the same while The Broken Hearts Gallery is the top new movie of the weekend and all but 1 of the top 5 grosses over a million for the period.

Here is a rundown of the top 5 movies in North America 11th - 13th September 2020.

Tenet

Christopher Nolan's much praised, and much disliked, movie spends a second weekend at number 1 with a gross of $6.7 Million, which when compared with last weekends real figure of $9.5 Million as released by Warner Bros. this isn't too bad a drop.

This of course is under unusual circumstances as many cinemas in America are still closed and many more people still dont want to go to the cinema due to health concerns, couple this with the limited capacity and you get a clear picture of how the grosses are working in the current climate.

This has though pushed the movies total North American gross to $29.5 Million over its 2 weekends of release.

The New Mutants

Hanging on in second place is Disney's mutant movie which this week takes $2.09 Million in the US.

The movie has a total gross of $15.3 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Unhinged

The Russel Crowe starring movie remains at number 3 taking $1.5 Million over the weekend which gives it a 5 week total gross of $13.8 Million.

The Broken Hearts Gallery

The Broken Hearts Gallery

Highest new movie of the weekend lans at number 4 and is Natalie Krinsky directorial debut.

The movie takes $1.1 Million on its debut, which is perhaps a little lower than expected especially in the current climate and the romantic escapism the movie offers.

Bill & Ted Face The Music

The third Bill And Ted movie falls to number 5 this weekend with $292.6K bringing its 3 week box office total to $2.8 Million.

This has been a real shame for the movie which got a release on streaming the same time as a theatrical release and will have basically destroyed its potential box office gross.

With cinemas in the UK still not operating anywhere near capacity and couple that with many people still not willing to spend a couple of hours in close proximity to other people tenet spends a second weekend at the top in a weaker box office than last week.

The top film of the weekend is 20th Century Fox's (and hence Disney's) much delayed mutant movie The New Mutants which makes its debut this week and has perhaps been a bit disappointing for many.

With the weakened weekend box office and the potential new spike in the COVID-19 cases the box office is not looking good, and if the likes of Wonder Woman 1984 and No Time To Die get delayed we may not see a full recovery until well into next year.

Here is a breakdown of this week top 5 movies in the UK 4th - 6th September 2020.

Tenet

Christopher Nolans head scratching new movie which has split opinion among movie goers remains at the top in the UK box office for a second weekend with £2.1 Million.

This puts the movies total UK gross at £10 Million, it is the top movie of the summer period and could well be the top title for weeks to come.

The New Mutants

The New Mutants

Peerhaps coming in lower than expected the new Disney movie from the X-Men univers makes its debut at number 2 with £686.4K.

It's hard to know where this movie will go from here, it could be a long running movie as Unhinged has been, but if we get the new big blockbusters that are expected in the next couple of months it could sink without trace and end up on Disney+ sooner rather than later.

After We Collided

Directed by Roger Kumble this movie at first was not a top 5 movie but then when figures came in from the distributer it was a top 3 movie!

The film takes £256K on its debut with little in the way of hype or word of mouth.

Onward

Pixars computer generated animation falls to it lowest position since it launched on March with a weekend gross of £135.6K.

This puts the movies total gross as £6.9 Million after 13 weeks on the box office.

Unhinged

The Russell Crowe starring thriller drops to number 5 this week with £96.9K for a £1 Million total after 6 weeks of play.

The saviour of cinema finally gets a US release and in the process of course tops the box office and with a half decent gross, although Warner Bros. are not giving daily totals for the movie and this total is from the movies initial release and takes in 11 days of release data!

With Tenet easily topping the box office with an 11 day opening weekend! The New Mutants falls to number 2 but still with a half decent second weekend gross while many holdovers fill up the other places on the top 5.

Remember that cinemas in the US are still largely closed, and where there are places open they are strictly under limited capacity allowing for social distancing and many people are still not comfortable sitting in a dark room for 2+ hours with total strangers.

Here is a breakdown of this weeks top 5 movies in the US 4th - 6th September 2020.

Tenet

Christopher Nolans latest directorial movie has had a troubled time making its way to movie theatres but after a couple of delays it has been released into a troubled marketplace where many cinemas in America are still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This hasn't stopped everyone from enjoying the movie billed as the saviour of cinema as the movie makes its debut in the US to a reported weekend gross of $20.2 Million.

The movie is in this for the long stay and will no doubt encourage people to movie theatres in the coming weeks and months, although a move to VOD could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

The New Mutants

The New Mutants

The latest mutant movie from the X-Men universe falls to number 2 this weekend with a gross of $3.03 Million, better than would have been expected from the critically panned film.

This pushes the movies total gross in the US to $11.7 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Unhinged

Russell Crowes latest movie may not have made the money expected but it has had a good chart run and this week is at number 3 with $1.8 Million.

This takes the films total gross to $11.4 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Bill And Ted Face The Music

The movie hit VOD at the same time at its theatrical release and after a top 3 entry last weekend falls to 4 this week with $773.1K pushing its total theatrical gross to $2.3 Million after 2 weeks.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run

The animated movie is still only on release in Canada and this week climbs to number 5 with $345K taking its 4 week gross to $3.3 Million.

As Tenet opens up in more of the world it easily takes over at the top of the global box office ahead of the Chinese movie The Eight Hundred.

The global box office is still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the biggest movie to go direct to VOD got a cinema release in some countries and Mulan is the top new movie of the weekend.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies across the globe 4th - 6th September 2020.

Tenet

The Christopher Nolan directed movie gets a release across much more of the world this weekend, including America, and tops the global box office easily with $126 Million.

This pushes the films total global gross to $146.2 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The Eight Hundred

The Chinese hit movie falls to number 2 this week with a gross of $34 Million pushing the films total gross to $336.2 Millon after 4 weeks of release.

The New Mutants

Like Tenet the Mutant movie from 20th Century Fox under the Disney banner got released in more of the world this week and took $12.7 Million globally over the weekend.

This pushes the movie total gross to $20.8 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Mulan~2020

Mulan

Controversially released onto Disney+ simultaneously with a cinema release the Disney live action remake makes its debut on the global chart at number 3 this weekend with $5.9 Million from 9 countries, but not America.

This movie was to be a tentpole for Disney this year and was pulled from release days before it was set to go global in mid March as the pandemic hit and closed most of the worlds cinemas.

Unhinged

The Russell Crowe starring movie falls to 5 this weekend with $1.9 Million taking its total gross to $23.8 Million after 6 weeks of release.

As is well documents the COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating effect on the world has been the story of the summer, and in fact the year, and it has had the biggest impact on the box office ever.

Cinemas across the globe started closing down in the middle of March and didn't open again in the UK until early July, so the summer box office period of May till early September has been greatly effected.

Mulan

Most of the Spring and Summer potential blockbusters got their release dates moved, at least once, including Mulan, A Quiet Place Part II, Tenet and Ghostbusters: Afterlife and some of them got a direct to VOD release, including Mulan!

Tenet did finally get a cinema release at the tale end of August and was just about the biggest film of the summer and when the movie theatres finally opened the box office continued where it left off with the Pixar movie Onward still at the top.

What you will also see in the list of top 10 movies for the summer is evidence that movie theatres used old catalogue titles to try and entice movie goers back hence Jurassic Park and Dirty Dancing showing up.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 film of the summer box office 2020.

Tenet

Christopher Nolan potential big summer blockbuster had its difficulties on its way to the box office but it finally got a release on 28th August and was hailed as the saviour of the cinema.

The movie had a good start to its box office career and took £5.3 Million on its debut and took £10 Million over the Summer period.

In comparison the top film of summer 2019 was the The Lion King remake which took over £71 Million.

Onward

Onward

Disney's Pixar movie Onward was the top film on weekend of 13th March when cinemas closed and when they came back it was still the top movie, it has remained in the top 3 for every UK box office since.

Over the summer the movie took was has tuned out to be quite an impressive £1.6 Million.

Unhinged

After the top 2 potential blockbusters we start to get movies which would not have been big movies, but due to the lack of big blockbusters they got a lot of exposure, maybe still not taking as much as they would have done but having good box office runs.

This Russell Crowe movie was the first new movie to get released after the closures and benefitted from that, it has a big star name and got a decent amount of hype and exposure.

The movie took £1.4 Million over the summer period.

100 Wolf

Another movie which has had a decent box office run that would not have without the lack of blockbusters is director Alexs Stadermann likeable animation which took just over a Million pound over the summer.

Trolls World Tour

Perhaps the most controversial movie of the summer, the sequel movie was at the start of the summer the biggest movie to go direct to VOD that would have had a good box office run.

The cinema chains, especially the American company AMC which owns the ODEON chain in the UK objected to this move, this was at a time when the world didn't know how long the closures would last.

Despite the release onto VOD the movie still took a very respectable £745K at the UK box office, this is no where near tens of million it has taken on digital.
