This weekend with the release of the highly anticipated Ridley Scott film Alien: Covenant we were always going to see a new film at the top, and Guardians gets push off by the Alien movie.

Despite the mediocre reviews the films launch has it enter the top with a weekend gross of &5.1 million, compared to its predecessor Prometheus this is a million lower.

Falling from the top is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 after a couple of weeks at the top, a £3,2 million weekend brings the films total to £33 million after 3 weeks of play.

Studios were a bit nervous to release new films against the Alien movie but Miss Sloan starring hot property Jessica Chastain entered the chart at 8 with just over £190,000.

Also new was the Cinema event feature Der Rosenkavalier: Met Opera 2017 which took a little over £313,000 and is at 6.

Beaty and The Beast is the longest running film on the box office with 9 weeks of release and has taken an amazing £71 million, its the 8th top grossing film ever in the UK.

A year ago - Captain America Civil War remained at the top for a third week despite heavy competition from The Angry Birds Movie which entered at number 2.

Five years ago - Making it three weeks at the top was Avengers Assemble while Dark Shadows entered highest at number 3.

Ten years ago - Spider-Man 3 stayed at the top for a second weekend while 28 Weeks Later entered highest at number 2.

Fifteen years ago - About a Boy was the top film of the week for a third time while Dog Soldiers was the top new film at 3.

Twenty years ago - Staying at the top was Liar Liar while the top new film was at number 4 int the shape of Anaconda.

Twenty five years ago - Basic Instinct entered the chart at the top under a blanket of controversy while The Hand That Rocks The Cradle fell to number 2 on its 4th week of release.

Second week of release for the Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 keeps it at the top with A Dogs Purpose coming in at 2 as the highest new film.

With a 50%+ drop in its weekend gross Guardians this week takes £6 million in its box office takings.

This takes the Chris Pratt starring movie to £27.4 million after 10 days of release, the film is current doing almost double the business of the original Guardians movie at this point.

Highest new film of the week is a little known comedy film called A Dogs Purpose, starring Dennis Quaid and directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

It was a US hit a month or so back and after taking £1.3 million on its debut is set to become a hit on this side of the Atlantic as well.

Also new this week is Sleepless at number 6, MIndhorn at number 8 and Unlocked at number 10, a low grossing top 10 this week means all these film took less than half a million on their debut.

This weeks longest stay on the chart is Get Out which has been around for 8 week while top new film is once again Beauty and The Beast which has now taken £71 million and is the 8th top film ever in the UK.

The Marvel unsung heroes (outside of Deadpool) have gained a massive following since the release of the first film and the inevitable sequel was always going to be a massive blockbuster.

Landing at the top of this weeks UK box office Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 takes a fantastic £13 million making it the 41 highest debut ever, behind The Inbetweeners Movie and head of The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers.

The original Guardians of The Galaxy opened to £6.3 million in 2014, good for an untried new franchise, this film had bigger hype and has gained a loyal following and more than doubles the debut gross.

With favourable reviews and stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana at the top of their games, and with the best hero at the cinema in Baby Groot were looking at a £40 - £50 million total gross.

Falling from the top after 2 weeks if Fast and Furious 8, a £1.7 million 3rd weekend means that the film has now taken £26 million, it will struggle now to catch up with Fast and Furious 7.

Also new this week is Baahubali 2 The Conclusion at number 6 with £0.4 million, The Promise at number 9 with £178,000 and Lady McBeth at number 10 with £174,000.

Sing re-entered the chart this week and at 9 weeks is the longest running film while Beauty and The Beast is the highest total grossing movie with £70 million, its the 8th UK top film ever.
