News from around the web

Half of 2016 is over, were into the summer season at the box office, so what has happened during the first part of the year at the UK box office.

Like the rest of the work Disney has well and truly ruled, although on the strong superhero front although its Marvel who have dominated its not a Disney Marvel.

Oddly the highest grossing movie of the year so far is a 2015 release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens which has grossed £57 million in 2016.

Out of interest the film was the second highest grossing film in 2015 with a total gross of £65.9 million, the film has made a shed load of money.

Disney's live action version of The Jungle Book is the second highest grossing movie of the year so far with £45.6 million.

Now comes the superhero movie taking their turn.

The third highest grossing film of the year so far is a Marvel superhero movie but not a Disney one, Deadpool has taken £37.6 million.

Captain America Civil War is fourth with £36.4 million and maybe the biggest disappointment in terms of expectation is Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice which is the fifth top film of the year so far with £36.4 million.

The rest of the top 10 film of the year so far are, Zootopia, The Revenant, X-Men Apocalypse, Alvin and The Chipmunks The Road Chip and Daddys Home.

There are obviously some big films to come this year but with The Force Awakens so far ahead already will it really take another Star Wars film to challenge it?

On the UK video chart this week there was no moving any of the top 3 as Deadpool, Dads Arm and The Revenant all stayed in the same positions.

This makes it a 2 week stay at the top for Deadpool and of course in the process Marvel (but not Disney) showing an ever strong fan base.

With a static top 3 it means that the highest new film of the week comes in at number 4, Alvin and his Chipmunks starring in Alvin and The Chipmunks The Road Chip.

The film made its debut on 12th February 2016 and entered the UK box office at number 2, kept off the top spot by Deadpool.

As with the other films in the series it enjoyed a relatively successful box office chart run staying for 8 weeks in total.

During that time it grossed a very nice £16.5 million in ticket sales, and could see the film get a 5th entry! In the UK it is the 262nd highest grossing movie, across the globe it didn't have quite the same impact and made $234.7 million.

The only other new film on the video chart this week is The Forest, a small hit from late February 2016.

Marvels latest superhero goes to the top of the UK box office with an incredibly good opening weekend, far better than could have been predicted.

Ryan Reynolds stars in Deadpool which makes its UK box office debut at the top with an incredible £13.6 million debut.

The film which is being distributed by 20th Century Fox rather than Disney beat all expectation and becomes a new franchise for Marvel, a sequel is in the works.

Falling from the top down to number 5 after a single week is Goosebumps which takes just over £1 million pound bringing its total to £4.1.

Also new this week is Alvin and The Chipmunks The Road Chip at number 2 and maybe a little disappointing Zoolander No 2 at number 2.

Highest grossing film on the box office is Star Wars: The Force Awakens which has not taken an amazing £121 million.

Historical charts - A year ago - Valentines day favourite Fifty Shades of Grey made its debut at the top knocking Big Hero 6 into second place.

Five years ago - Gnomeo and Juliet took over the top spot on its debut from The Kings Speech which fell to number 2.

Ten years ago - Chicken Little from Disney was the top film on its debut and with a top 3 of new releases Zathura A Space Adventure fell from the top to number 5.

Fifteen years ago - What Women Want stayed at the top of the box office for a second week while Dude, Where's My Car? was the highest new film at number 2.

Twenty years ago - Heat stayed at the top for a second week while highest new film was Loch Ness at number 4.

Twenty Five years ago - Oscar winning Dances With Wolves was the highest new film at the top while Kindergarten Cop fell to number 2.

This week the latest Marvel superhero makes its debut across the world at the top of the global box office.

Taking an incredible $260 million in its first week of release Deadpool storms the world box office in 62 countries.

The latest from the Marvel studio's proves that its not just Disney who can make superhero films and make money, 20th Century Fox can do it too.

Despite doing exceptionally well in China Kung Fu Panda 3 falls from the top of the world box office with a $34 million weekly gross, the film has taken $256 million to date.

Highest total grossing movie on the world box office this week, now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has dropped to number 11 is The Revenant with $361 million.

  1. Deadpool - $260,000,000
  2. Mei ren yu (The Mermaid) - $109,000,000

  10. The Violent Prosecutor - $11,000,000

Kung Fu Panda 3 continues to dominate the world box office this week with a world gross of $44 million over the week, made even more impressive as its only from 8 countries.

The Jack Black voiced animated tale has now taken just shy of $200 million over its 2 week run, and with much of the world still to go it could go onto $500 million with ease.

Highest new film of the week across the world is A Violent Prosecutor, the Chinese film took $19.5 million from its single country of release, albeit the second largest cinema going country.

The Force Awakens is still pulling in the audiences in 47 countries and this week gets closer to taking over Titanic as the second highest grossing film over, its total gross is now $2.08 billion.
