News from around the web

The good news is we got a box office chart this weekend, the bad news is only due to the lockdown effecting most of the UK only 22 cinemas were open and the top movie took most of its weekend gross from the previous weekend!

Documentary feature The Three Kings was the top movie of the weekend, it knocked off Two By Two: Overboard! to number 3, but the whole top 15 took just over £19,00.

Outside the top 5, sequel movie A Christmas Gift From Bob made its debut at 9 with £757.

Here is this weeks top 15 Quickview

  • Number 1 - The Three Kings (1st week)
  • Highest debut - The Three Kings (@1)
  • Longest run - Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite! (6 weeks)*
  • Highest total gross - Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite! (£1,375,548)*
  • *Not including re-releases

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies on the UK box office 6th - 8th November 2020

The Three Kings

The documentary feature from Jonny Owen makes its debut at number 1 with a weekend gross of £3,521, altohugh £3,470 was from preview screenings meaning it took £51 over the weekend which would have given Honest Thief the top position.

The film is about 3 of the greatest Scottish footballer managers of all time, and with most, if not all, cinemas in the UK allowed to open are in Scotland during the lockdown this is perhaps no surprise.

This is a number 1 due to extreme and unique circumstances, congratulations to Jonny Owen and the film makers for the number 1 but I suspect the movie will disappear next weekend.

Honest Thief

Jumping back up to number 2 is the Liam Neeson vehicle which takes £2,922 over the weekend, 98% down from last weekend which gives the movie a £651,408 total after 3 weeks.

Two By Two: Overboard!

Falling from the top to number 3 is the animated movies about animals on the ark which takes £2,374 over the weekend, 99% down from last weekend.

The animated feature has had a great box office run in the COVID-19 era and has not taken just under a million pound over 3 weeks.

Words On Bathroom Walls

Entering the box office at number 4 this weekend is director Thor Freudenthal movie which takes £1,709 on its debut weekend.

The Secret Garden

Adapted from the children's novel and starring starring Julie Walters, Colin Firth the movie drops to number 5 this weekend with £1,709, a 99% drop, which gives the movie a total gross of £664,051.

A new trailer and poster has been released from Disney studios for their upcoming movie Jungle Cruise which you can see to the right and below.

Like Pirates Of The Caribbean the movie is based on a ride at the Disneyland resort in Anaheim California, there are 4 movies in the Pirates series which went on to gross over a Billion dollars each so hopes might be quite high for this, especially as Johnson and Blunt are two of the biggest stars around at the moment.

The movies release date is 24th July 2020 and it stars among others Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra

Set during the early 20th century, a riverboat captain named Frank takes a scientist and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life which is believed to possess healing powers. Based on Disneyland"s theme park ride the jungle is filled with dangerous animals but supernatural element are around every corner.

The UK box office has a change at the top as director Leigh Whannell's take on The Invisible Man knocks Sonic The Hedgehog from the top while true life thriller Dark Waters makes its debut at number 4.

The Invisible Man

Starring Elisabeth Moss this monster movie makes its debut at the top of the UK box office with a weekend gross of £2.1 Million.

Contributing to the surprise success is the very positive reviews from both critics and public alike.

We can expect this movie to continue to do well over the coming weeks especially as the only competition coming up is the Pixar movie Onward which is aimed at a totally different demographic.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The Jim Carrey starring film falls from the top to number 2 this week with a weekend gross of £1.9 Million.

This takes the movies total UK gross to £17.2 Million making it not only one of the most successful video game adaptation but by far the top Jim Carrey film in 10 years.

The South Korean Oscar darling remains at number 3 this week with a take of £1 Million taking its total gross in the UK to £10.3 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Dark Waters

The World War drama is the top total grossing film this week with £42.8 Million and the longerst running film on the chart this week with 8 weeks.

Robert Downey Jr. returns to the bog screen in a new adaptation of the Dr. Dolittle story which has been given a PG rating in the UK.

After spending a long time as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Robert Downey Jr. is now playing the man who can walk and talk with the animals in Dolittle.

Voicing the animals in the movie are the vocal talents of Rami Malek, Martin Sheen and Tom Holland.

The film has been given a PG age rating on the UK by the BBFC for mild threat, rude humour and it has a runtime of 101 minutes (1 hours 41 minutes) and the movie was passed uncut.

The movie is released on 7th February 2020.

BBFC film info page.

The movie has got a name change from The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle to simply Dolittle and Universal have treated us to the first poster and trailer for the man who can walk with the animals as well as talk to them.

The movies stars Robert Downey Jr. as the title character but the likes of Rami Malek, Tom Holland and Micheal Sheen are lending their voices for the many animals.

The trailer shows the film is set in the past and there is plenty of CGI goodness on display as the animals get a good showing, and its clear than Downey Jr. is more Rex Harrison and less Eddie Murphy.
