Ripley Scott's latest film The Martian has been by far the biggest release of the week in the UK, and across the globe.

The film starring Matt Damon has made a great £6.5 million on its debut week of release in the UK.

This marks Scott's highest grossing UK debut just piping Prometheus and Hannibal which both debuted with over £6 million.

For Matt Damon its his second highest debut in the UK as The Bourne Ultimatum just just over £6.5 million.

Last weeks top film Everest falls to number 3 this week with under £1 million on its third week, it has grossed £8.7 million.

Also new this week are: The Intern new at 4, Macbeth new at 5, Il Trovatore Met Opera 2015 new at 7 from it's single day showing in cinemas and Singh Is Bling new at 9.

Historical charts

A year ago - Gone Girl made its debut at the top of the box office knocking The Boxtrolls down to 4.

Five years ago - The Other Guys stay at the top with the top new film entering at 3 in the shape of Buried.

Ten years ago - Pride and Prejudice stays at the top for another week while A History of Violence is the highest new entry at 2.

Fifteen years ago Hollow Man debutes at the top of the box office knocking off Me Myself and Irene off.

Twenty years ago - Apollo 13 stays at the top while Species is the highest new entry coming in at 2.

Twenty five years ago - Presumed Innocent comes in at at the top knocking off Another 48 Hours from the top.

This weeks top 3 is unchanged from last week meaning that the true story of an expedition to the summit of Everest is still the number one film.

It was a quiet weekend with Everest only taking £1.9 million during it's second weekend of release, this brings it's total gross after 10 days to £6.8 million.

The static top 3 means the highest new film of the week comes in at 4, Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette star the the romantic comedy Miss You Already.

Surprisingly positive reviews haven't helped the film that much and the film debuts with only £487,247.

By far the biggest total grossing film on the box office this week is Minions which just about hangs onto the top 15 and has grossed to date £46.3 million, its still not reached Despicable Me's total gross of £47 million but its not far behind.

There should be a big change in next weeks chart with Ridley Scotts The Martian opening, Robert De Niro in The Intern and a new adaptation of Macbeth with Michael Fassbender.
