It's 35 years since Star Wars made it debut in the US, it opened in Manns Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles (and actually 31 other locations across America), and people queued around the block to see it.
The legacy of the original has been immense and still to this day the Star Wars series of 6 films is one of the highest grossing movie series of all time, behind only Harry Potter and James Bond.
The franchise hit mass criticism and lost some of it's appeal after the 1999 release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace which was to explain the back story of the popular villain Darth Vader, but all it really did was anger fans because it was frankly quite naff.
The disappointment of the new trilogy of films angered fans more because a few years previously Lucas had messed with the loved original trilogy adding new special effects and scenes, fans preferred the original theatrical release, especially the changed Jaba The Hut scene and the now infamous Gredo shoots first scene.
Despite all this Star Wars is alive and well, and in truth us fans still love the series, the new films got better as the series went on and we all hope and prey for the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special to be released on Blu-ray some time.
