News from around the web

Avatar this week has become the top grossing movie released globally in 2022, it is yet to be the top grossing movie of 2022 in North America and Canada or the UK.

The James Cameron directed sequel to Avatar has taken over $1.5 Billion at the global box office, with China, Japan, Europe and Australia showing good figures for the movie.

The current tally of global grosses is

  • North America and Canada $471.8 Million
  • China $171.5 Million
  • France $97 Million
  • Germany $79.5 Million
  • Korea $79.2 Million
  • United Kingdom and Ireland $62.1 Million
  • India $52.4 Million
  • Australia $40.8 Million
  • Mexico $40.6 Million
  • Italy $35.7 Million
  • Spain $33.3 Million
  • Brazil $27.2 Million
  • Japan $20.7 Million

In the UK the top grossing movie of 2022 is Top Gun: Maverick which took an amazing £83.5 Million during its summer run, the Avatar sequel still has a bit to go to catch up.

In North America and Canada the Top Gun sequel took $717 Million on its 24 week run, and with Avatar: The Way of Water still pulling in good numbers, and an increase in screen this weekend couples with little competition until Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in mid February its looking likely the movie will go ahead.

It was an interesting year at the box office in 2022, there were some big disappointments, but its looks like there were 3 Billion dollar movies as well as a couple which got close.

One of those movie will most likely go over the $2 Billion mark, the first time that has happened since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 (pre-pandemic), although Spider-Man: No Way Home came very close in 2021.

The new movie from Marvel Studios, Thor: Love and Thunder has taken an incredible $15.7 Million across the globe on its early Wednesday release in 17 countries.

The movie did best in South Korea where it took $3.1 Million and Australia where it grossed $3 Million.

The movie opens in many more countries tonight (Thursday) including the UK before it goes wide this coming weekend, 8th July 2022.

This performance is better than the previous movie, Thor: Ragnarok by nearly 40%.

The movie is one of the more anticipated movies of 2022 and should have a UK opening somewhere somewhere in the £25 - 30 Million region and globally it should pass the $500 Million mark on its debut.

A year where cinema had a difficult start and was dominated by movies from China as their cinema industry flourished ended with Bond, Superhero movies (as usual), a Chinese mega hit movie and was seen out by the first $1 Billion movie in almost 2 years.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movie of 2021 at the global box office.

Spider Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home has had an amazing December at the global box office as it became the top movie of 2021, after only 2 weeks of release it has taken over $1.1 Billion globally.

The movie is in fact the only film of 2021 to go over the milestone of 1 Billion dollars, and as no movie in 2020 came anywhere near the milestone it's the first movie since 2019 to do it.

The Battle At Lake Changjin

Released primarily in China The Battle At Lake Changjin looked like it was going to be the top movie of the year, but it was not to be as it was pipped at the post by a superhero movie and so has to contend with the runner up spot.

The movie took an amazing $902.2 Million, even more amazing considering it was only released in China.

Hi, Mom

The Chinese movie was only released globally in China, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, and yet still managed to take $822 Million globally in 2021.

The comedy is the 3rd top film of the year and considering it was released in a time when much of the world was either closed or on very limited cinema capacity it gave comedic relief for parts of the world.

No Time To Die

By the time the 25th Bond movie was released in cinemas it had been delayed many times and the world was ready to see Daniel Craigs last Bond movie.

Cinema goers in many countries were still unsure about going back into a dark with with strangers, but this movie is the 4th top movie of 2021 having taken $765 Million.

Fast & Furious 9

Another movie that got delayed by over a year from its original release, it also had a very staggered global release but it still managed to gross $710.6 Million making it the 5th top movie of 2021.

It took no where near the last few movies in the series, but even with the issues cinema has had this year its a great overal global take.

Here is the top 10 movies global in 2021

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home - $1.1 Billion
  2. The Battle At Lake Changjin - $902.2 Million
  3. Hi, Mom - $822 Million
