A couple of new releases bookend the UK box office this weekend with Avatar: The Way of Water making its debut at the top and The Nutcracker and the Magic Flute new at number 12 with £16,691.

Highest new movie this weekend

Director James Cameron and Disney finally release the long awaited sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time Avatar at the Uk box office.

The movie comes 13 years after the film visit to Pandora, and this movie takes place 10 years after the events of that movie.

The first Avatar took £8.5 Million on its opening weekend and over 18 weeks took over £93 Million and overtook Titanic as the top grossing movie in the UK, it has since been taken by a number of movie and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the top grossing movie.

This sequel takes £11.6 Million on its debut which makes it the 77th top opening in the UK ever and the 9th top opening in the UK for the month of December.

THe original Avatar was a bit of a slow burner, and with the Christmas season upon us this movie could have good legs until Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is released on 17th February 2023.

After spending an incredible 3 weeks at the top the musical version of the classic Roal Dahl novel falls to number 2 with £1.3 Million, a 34% drop.

The movie has taken an amazing £12.8 Million over its 4 weeks of release.

In comparison the 1997 movie, adjusted for inflation, took £3.7 Million on its 4th weekend for a total of £37.8 Million.

Looking ahead to the movies total gross and if it can become the top grossing movie released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick took £15.9 Million on its debut weekend and spent 23 weeks on the box office.

Falling to 3 this week is the sequel movie to Black Panther which takes a bit of a hit this weekend with Avatar: The Way of Water being a movie in direct competition, it takes £377,598 over the weekend, a 53% drop.

The movie has taken £31.6 Million over its 6 weeks of release, far lower than the original movie which has taken £44.8 Million at this point.

The movie about Santa Claus being a bad ass drops to number 3 this weekend with £330,606, a 42% drop over last weekend.

The movie as been on the box office fir 3 weeks now and has taken £2.6 Million.

Falling to number 4 is the latest Disney movie which takes £193,659 this weekend, a 37% drop, for a £2 Million total over 4 weeks of release.

This weekend at the US box office Black Panther: Wankanda Forever remained on top for another week while the top new movie was the Christmas themed Violent Night at 2.

Lower down the box office I Heard the Bells was new at 6 with $1.8 Million and HIT: The 2nd Case is new at 12 with $600,000.

New at 13 this weekend is The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie with $502,000 and finally Top Gun: Maverick is back in cinemas and takes $700,000 over the weekend to push its US gross to $717.3 Million.

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 2nd - 4th December 2022

Spending a 4th weekend at the top of the North American box office is the sequel Marvel movie which takes $17.5 Million, a 61% drop over last weekend.

This gives the Black Panther sequel a total US gross of $393.7 Million and is now the 3rd top movie of 2022 in North America having just taken Jurassic World: Dominion.

The movie is well below Black Panther which by this point in its box office run had taken over $500 Million but it only has just over $17 Million to go before beating Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness to be the top Marvel movie, and superhero movie, of 2022.

Highest new movie this weekend

Highest new entry of the weekend goes to the Christmas themed movie about a bad ass Santa who saves a family being held for ransom in their house.

The movie directed by Tommy Wirkola and starring David Harbour lands at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $13.3 Million.

Not bad for a Christmas horror based movie, in comparison Krampus from 2015 landed at the same time of year with a debut gross of $16.2 Million.

Disney's latest animated movie is struggling on the box office and this week falls to number 3 with $4.9 Million, a large 74% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken just $25 Million on its 2 week run at the box office, Encanto released the same time of year in 2021 had taken $57.9 Million 2 weeks into its run.

Jumping back up the chart to number 4 this week is the Ralph Fiennes starring fine dining movie which takes $3.5 Million, a modest 35% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total North American box office total of $24.7 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Finally on this weeks to 5 is the J.D. Dillard directed flying movie which drops to number 5 with $2.7 Million, a 69% drop over last week.

The movie has taken $13.8 Million after 2 weeks of release.

It's been a long time coming but we final get the first trailer for the much anticipated Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) starring Margot Robbie.

The film which is a sort of spin off from Suicide Squad, is directed by Cathy Yan, this is her first major feature after directing the low budget Dead Pigs in 2018.

The film team Harley Quinn with a whole host of other bad ass women and has Ewan McGregor as Black Mask for the women to beat up on.
