Film Review: "The Beast" Is a Bungle  artsfuse.org Thu, 11th April 2024

It was a very slow weekend with no major new releases at the UK box office, and for the first time since the end of 2020 as cinemas started to close due to the COVID pandemic where no film in over the weekend took over a Million pound.

The top movie of the weekend, and the highest debut, is the event cinema Andre Rieues 2022 Maastricht Concert: Happy Days Are Here Again from the famous violinist which easily beast the new Idris Elba movie Beast~20221 which makes its debut at 2.

Further down the box office there is a new entry for The Invitation which has been on limited release and makes its debut at 12 with £261,791 and Official Competition which also on limited release is new at 15 with £101,916.

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 26th - 28th August 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Violinist Andre Rieu brings his summer concert from Maastricht to cinemas once again which gives the popular musician the highest debut and number one movie of the weekend.

In what is a very quiet period for cinemas and new releases the event cinema concert takes £798,706 on its debut.

This is of course not the first time Rieu has hit the box office but it is the first time one of his cinema events has hit the top of the box office.

The last time a concert hit the top was during the pandemic in the shape of Michael Ball & Alfie Boe: Back Together which took £175,778 in October 2020.

This has done better that last years summer concert which took, Andre Rieus 2021 Summer Concert: Together Again, which took £420,056 exactly a year ago.

Beast~20221

The new movie starring Idris Elba makes its debut at number 2 this weekend with a debut gross of £600,259.

This is perhaps a little on the disappointing side for a film starring such a big name, the last film Elba was in was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and he has a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness both of which are among the biggest movies of the year.

Elba stars in another movie released this weekend, Three Thousand Years of Longing, which has not gone down that well in the US so it will be interesting to see next week how well it does in the UK.

The animated feature from the DC Universe of movies stays at number 3 this weekend with a gross of £598,985, a 26% drop.

The movie has now taken £12.2 Million in the UK after 5 weekends of release.

The Brad Pitt starring movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £593,044, a 29% drop which gives the movie a total gros sof £8.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Falling from the top to this weeks number 5 the Jordan Peele horror movie takes £576,643, a 50% over its gross last weekend.

The movie has now taken £5.9 Million in the UK after 3 weeks of release.

Still no sign of the US closedown ending anytime soon so the American box office is once more relying on mainly drive-in movie theatres for its figures.

This week the Dave Franco directed The Rental tops the box office with ease and is the widest release since the pandemic closed 99% of movie theatres.

Here is a rundown of the top 5 box office films in America 24th - 26th July 2020.

The Rental

Directed by Dave Franco this horror suspense movie takes the top spot with ease, last weeks Beauty And The Beast live action doesn't even feature on this week chart.

The movie takes $403.8K over its debut weekend giving the actor turned director a sizeable hit even under these strange circumstances.

The Karate Kid

Re-released movies are going to be a mainstay of the box office for the foreseeable future as studios keep on changing their release schedule and this week this 1984 classic is a 'new' entry at number 2.

The Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita starring movie takes $225K over the weekend with a total gross since release of $91 Million.

The Goonies

Climbing from last weeks number 5 to 3 is this old Richard Donner favourite which takes $176K over the weekend pushing its total in the US to $62.5 Million.

Jurassic Park

Steven Spielberg classic Dinosaur movie for 1993 stays put at 4 this week with $173K, the films has now taken $403.5 Million wince its release.

The Big Ugly

Highest new film of the week with this Scott Wiper directed movie which takes a modest $150K over the weekend.

The movie starrs among other Vinnie Jones and Ron Perlman.

Cinemas in the US are starting to close down again rather than re-open and release dates are starting to get changed and removed altogether from schedules so its drive-in movie showings which once again shine.

Disney's live action remake of Beaty And The Beast from 2017 is this weeks top film and with nothing in the way of new release there is nothing to report on that front, in fact the whole top 5 this week are all re-released.
