There have been some classics like the Ghostbusters themed ones which look like ghost traps, or the Dune Part ii one which looked like ... well use your imagination!

Ryan Reynolds today announced the new one for Deadpool and Wolverine and it looks like he is fulfilling a few fantasies with this one!

Free Guys spends a second weekend at the top of the US box office giving director Shawn Levy his boggest hit outside the Night at the Museum series.

Making its debut at number 2 is the children's film The Paw Patrol Movie

while outside the top 5 The Protege is new at number 7 with a debut gross of just under $3 Million.

Also new this weekend is The Night House at number 8 with $2.8 Million and Reminiscence at number 9 with $2 Million.

US box office weekend top 5 breakdown 20th - 22nd August 2021

Free Guy

Spending a second weekend at the top of the US box office the Ryan Reynolds starring video game movie which takes $18.7 Million over its second weekend of release, a modest 34% drop over last weekend.

This gives director Shawn Levy his fourth biggest movie in the US with only the three Night at the Museum series ahead of it, and as were stil in the pandemic this is quite a feat.

The movie has a total US gross of $58.8 Million after 10 days of release and its now the 9th top movie of 2021.

The PAW Patrol: Movie

The children's TV series turned hit movie is doing big business across the world and is impressively the runner up movie to Free Guy across many territories, and in the US makes its debut at number 2 with a gross of $13 Million.

With the US summer holidays all but over now it will rely on mothers wanting to entertain their very young children for an hour or so to take it forward, failing that a big drop could be on the cards next weekend.

Jungle Cruise

The Disney hit movie remains at number 3 this weekend with $6.2 Million, a slim 345 drop over last weekend, which gives the movie a $92.5 Million total over 4 weeks and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

Don't Breathe 2

The horror movie sequel slips to number 4 this weekend with $5 Million, a large 52% drop, which puts the movies total gross at $19.6 Million after 10 days of release.

Respect

Falling to number 5 is the Aretha Franklin bio-pic starring Jennifer Hudson which has a second weekend gross of $3.8 Million, 57% doen on last weekend, the movie has taken $15.1 Million total in the US.

With the 2020 box office collapsing in March due to the global pandemic the Chinese market was the first an quickest to recover and it dominated the global scene over the whole year.

The top grossing movie of the year was The Eight Hundred wich was released in August and did big business in China.

Chinese films accounted for 6 of the top 20 movies of the year and 7 of the movie were released in 2019 with a holdover in 2020.

Tenet which was the first big movie released during the pandemic made it into the top 5 movies of the year despite being considered a flop.

Many movies have had there releases moved to 2021 and cinemas did not have the massive tentpole pictures that would have pulled in over a Billion dollars in revenue, in fact its the first time in over a decade there has been no movie taking over $1 Billion.

The Eight Hundred

A massive hit in China the action war epic is directed by Hu Guan and took $161 Million on its full opening weekend.

Over its full global release the movie took $441.8 Million making the top grossing global movie of the year.

Bad Boys For Life

After a lengthy gap Will Smith and Martin Lawrence re-teamed as the Miami cops and the movie was a global smash.

Released at the start of the year its release just missed the cinemas closures due to COVID-19 and took $418.2 Million.

1917

Sam Mendes released his Oscar nominated was movie in America in late 2019 but got its global release in early 2020 and its the 3rd top movie of 2020 with $375.4 Million.

My People, My Homeland

Directed by 7 of Chinas top directors this anthology movie took $101 Million durings its Chinese opening.

Globally the movie is the 4th highest grossing of the year with $371.1 Million.

Tenet

In America this movie was moved to an August release with studios hoping that cinemas would have re-opened after 4 months of closures, but the global pandemic had other ideas and although countries has started to re-opened cinemas had limited capacity.

The movie did relatively well in global cinemas but with mixed reviews it was not the film Warner Bros. had hoped, but a top five of the year is not bad with a gross of $362.6.

With the release of the Marvel movie Ant-Man And The Wasp in China the film retakes the top of the global box office with a weekly gross of $73 million from 29 countries.

This now pushes the total global gross of the film to $544 million after 4 weeks of release.

The Meg is still doing big business at the global box office and takes $45 million from 66 countries on its 3rd week of reelase which pushes the films global gross to $408 million.

US number 1 film Crazy Rich Asians expands its country count to 19 this week and takes $31 million, it now has a total gross of $84 million.

Mission:Impossible Fallout is still doing well globally and this week takes $21 million for a total gross of $538.7 million.

Finishing off the top 5 is Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation which takes $20 million across the week to boost its total gross to $460.4 million.

Top total global gross on this weeks chart is Ant-Man And The Wasp.

In the US this weekend the latest Bond movie Spectre continued to do big business and in the process remained at number 1 for a second weekend.

Dropping nearly 50% from its debut weekend Spectre managed to gross $35.4 million which brings its total gross to $130.7 million in the US.

Highest new entry of the week is Love the Coopers (Christmas with the Coopers) which makes its debut at number 3.

The Christmas comedy wasn't good enough the remove The Peanuts Movie from the number 2 spot and makes $8.4 million over the weekend.

Also new this week is: The 33 at number 5, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo at number 8 and My All American at number 12.
