News from around the web

Cinemas in the US are starting to close down again rather than re-open and release dates are starting to get changed and removed altogether from schedules so its drive-in movie showings which once again shine.

Disney's live action remake of Beaty And The Beast from 2017 is this weeks top film and with nothing in the way of new release there is nothing to report on that front, in fact the whole top 5 this week are all re-released.

Here is the top 5 movies in the US 17th - 19th July 2020

Beauty and the Beast

Originally released in mid-March of 2017 Disney continued their live action re-make succes with this tale as old as time, it made over $500 Million on its initial run.

This week it takes $467K which pushes the movies total to $504 Million.

Iron Man

Released May of 2009 the movie is credited with really kicking off the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Disney and succeeded where Hulk had failed previously.

This week the movie is at number 2 with $430K which brings the movies total gross to $318.6 Million.

Bohemian Rhapsody

The 2019 Oscar winning movie is at number 3 this week with a gross of $240K which boosts its total in the US to $216.4 Million.

Jurassic Park

This movie from director Steven Spielberg never seems to lose popularity and once again appears in the top 5 27 years after first release with $210K giving it a $403.5 Million total.

The Goonies

An '80 classic movie is at number 5 with a weekend take of $202K for a total US gross of $62.5 Million.

The pull of Disney's Aladdin live action was far too great for the British public and the film stays at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend leaving Godzilla to enter the box office at number 2.

Aladdin

The Guy Ritchie directed movie stays at the top with a weekend gross of £4.8 million which pushes its total UK gross to £19.7 million.

The film is doing well for a Disney live action remake although not as well as Beauty And The Beast which by its second weekend has taken nearly £40 million.

With this in mind the Genie movie should end up somewhere near the £35 million mark which should mean its Guy Ritchies top film to date and it could become Will Smiths top UK film to date.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

The Monster movie sequel was a favourite to hit the top of the box office this week but with a £3.5 million debut it wasn't quite good enough.

The film lands at number 2 this week which is half that of Gareth Edwards 2014 film, even more worryingly this is lower than Roland Emmerich 1998 film which landed at number 1 with £4.1 (not adjusted for inflation).

The Secret Life of Pets 2

The animated comedy stays at number 3 on its second weekend with a weekend gross of £2.9 million which pushes the films total gross to £11.8 million.

The film is running below the 2016 original which had taken £16 million by its second weekend of release.

Rocketman

The Elton John bio-film falls to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £2.4 million to boost its total to £11.9 million.

Despite the good reviews the film is not doing as well as Bohemian Rhapsody although with a high grossing top 4 this has effected its chart position although the Freddy Mercury film had made almost double on its second weekend of release.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

The Nintendo property keeps its top 5 position this week, at number 5, with a weekend gross of £664,469 which pushes its total UK gross to £12.5 million.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel mega hit falls to number 8 this weekend, but still only in its 6th weekend the film has taken £86.9 million.

On this weeks UK box office Disney brings its live action remake of Aladdin to the box office, directed by our very own Guy Ritchie, which scores a big number 1 debut, in a weekend with an all new top 3, this leaves Rocketman and The Secret Life Of Pets 2 to enter at 2 and 3.

Aladdin

The latest in the increasing line of live action remakes enters the UK box office, with ease, at the top.

The film starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud as the Genie and Aladdin takes over at the top with a £7 million debut.

This is by no means as good as 2017's Beauty And The Beast which has an opening weekend of £19 million but it is higher than this years Dumbo.

Rocketman

The Elton John fantasy bio-pic manages to take a fantastic £5.4 million on its debut weekend, but unfortunately released the same day as a Disney movie it only manages a number 2 debut.

The film Directed Dexter Fletcher and Starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell has wowed critics and if it repeats a similar course as Bohemian Rhapsody it will hand around a while and could still hit the top of the box office.

The Freddy Mercury film debuted to nearly £10 million and went on to take £55 million in the UK, I dont think this will repeat those figures.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Third new film in the top three and again under normal weekend conditions this would have been the top film but a £3.5 million debut this week means it hits number 3.

Compared to the first movie in the series this is actually way lover with that film taking nearly £10 million on its debut, but with the school holidays just around the corner this could have a long life.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum

The Keanu Reeves action movie falls from the top to number 4 on its second weekend of release with £1.4 million boosting its total to £6.2 million.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Three weeks on and the Pikachu movie is at 5 with £1 million over the weekend, this gives the film a new total of £10 million.

Avengers: Endgame

Falling out of the top 5 fir the first time this week the Marvel movie has now taken £85.5 million in the UK over 5 weeks.

It is the 5th top movie of all time in the UK where it will probably remain, behind Avatar, Spectre, Skyfall and Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Making an entry back into the top 15 after a time away the brick movie takes £43,254 on its 9th weekend which boosts its total to £18.6 million.

Rocketman is the fantasy Elton John biopic starring Taron Egerton as the flamboyant singer who is fames for his lavish lifestyle and tantrums.

The film is directed by Dexter Fletcher who took over directing duties on Bohemian Rhapsody when Bryan Singer got fired so the film should be in safe hands.

The film is released in the UK on 24th May 2019 and the BBFC have given is a 15 certificate for drug misuse, sex, very strong language and it has a run time of 121 minutes (2 hours and 1 minute).

As with any super hero film, especially from Marvel, Captain Marvel dominates the box office on its debut weekend of release with the highest debut for a new franchise in the 21 film franchise.

Captain Marvel

The first of this years Marvel films takes over at the top of the UK box office with ease this week and a £12.7 million debut weeeknd.

This is the 51st highest debut for a movie in the UK and is the already the 5th highest grossing film of 2019.

The last Marvel movie Avengers Infinity War went on to gross just why of £30 million, and with the sequel to that film just around the corner that could put this films total gross in the £25 million region.

Fighting With My Family

Falling to number 2 this week the Stephen Merchant direct film takes £1.03 million on its follow up weekend pushing is 10 day cume to £3.6 million.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The follow up brick movie is having a harder time on the box office in comparison to its predecessor and this week takes £816,200 pushing its 5 week cume to £16.7 million.

Instant Family

The Mark Wahlberg starring film has done well in the UK and this week falls to 4 with £673,286 which pushes its 4 week cume to £9.05 million.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Finally in the top 5 the threequel dragon movie takes £655,248 on its 6th week of release taking its total UK gross to £18.09 million.

The film is still the highest grossing film released in the UK in 2019 although Mary Poppins Returns is the highest grossing film of the year so far despite its 2018 release date.

Summary

In a week when there in a Marvel movie on the release schedule it will dominate and the top 5 this week has only 2 films grossing over a million pound which reflects that.

At number 14 this week is Bohemian Rhapsody which has now been around for an incredible 20 weeks and has taken £54.4 million.
