News from around the web

Disney take the top two spots at the US box office this weekend although with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever staying at the top it means the new animated tale Strange World limps into second place.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery makes an impressive debut at 3 on limited release while Devotion is new at 4.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (3rd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Strange World (@2)
  • Longest run - Smile~2022 (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($367.6 Million)
  • Total US top 15 this weekend - $107.4 Million

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 25th - 27th November 2022

Remaining at the top for a third weekend is the Marvel movie sequel to Black Panther which takes $45.9 Million over the post Thanksgiving weekend, a small drop of 32% over last weekend.

The movie is tracking behind the original but this weekend pushes its total gross to $367 Million, quite a way behind the $500 Million of Black Panther three weeks into its run.

The movie will hence most likely finish below that of the original which took over $700 Million at the North American box office.

Highest new movie this weekend

The new Disney animated movie falls below expectation at the US box office during a time of big change at Disney with the old CEO Bob Chapeck being replaced by former CEO Bob Iger!

The movie lands on the North American box office at number 2 with a Thanksgiving post weekend gross of $18.6 Million.

In comparison the previous Disney animated movie (not Pixar) was Encanto from the same time last year and that grossed over $27 Million on its debut, and box office takings were still low due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Netflix release their much anticipated sequel movie in limited cinemas for a limited run and the movie lands very nicely at number 3 on the box office this weekend.

The movie takes $13.2 Million on its debut weekend, comparing to the original Knives Out is not a fair comparison as that movie got a full theatrical release but released in 2019 it took $26.7 Million on its debut, and with this getting good reviews you can imagine what it would have achieved with a full theatrical release!

A poor set of reviews given to this, dare I say poor mans Top Gun Maverick as it lands at number 4 on the box office this weekend.

The movie takes $9 Million on its debut with a swift drop down the box office bound to follow!

Falling to number 5 this weekend after its debut at 2 is the Ralph Finnes and Anya Taylor-Joy starring movie which takes $5.2 Million this weekend, a 42$ drop.

This gives the movie a total North American gross of $18.6 Million after 2 weeks of release.

As Black Adam spends a second weekend at the top of the UK box office the top new movie of the weekend comes in at number 4 with horror movie Prey For the Devil to celebrate the halloween season.

Also new inside the top 5 is the event movie Coldplay Music of the Spheres Live Broadcast From Buenos Aires while outside the top 5 a 20th anniversary release of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is new at 7 with £454,250.

American hit movie Barbarian~2022 makes a disappointing entry at 8 with £380,812, also Triangle of Sadness is new at 10 with £308,950 and surprisingly celebrated LGBQ comedy BROS is new at 11 with £215,612.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Adam (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Prey For the Devil (@4)
  • Longest run - Ticket to Paradise (6 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Black Adam (£13.4 Million)
  • Total UK top 15 this weekend - £10.7 Million

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 28th - 30th October 2022

A second weekend at the top for the DC super hero movie starring Dwayne Johnson which takes £3.4 Million, a reasonable 38% drop over last weekend.

In comparison Shazam! from 2019 took £2.1 Million on its second weekend which was also a new unknown IP for Warner Bros., although it didn't have the big star name attached.

The movie has taken £13.4 Million in the UK after its 2 weeks (10 days) of release.

Jumping back up the chart to number 2 this weekend of the children's book adaptation which takes £1.4 Million, an incredible 4% increase over last weekend.

This gives the movie a totak UK gross of £9 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Falling to number 3 this weekend after making its debut at number 2 is the Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson friendship drama which takes £1.2 Million, a 23% drop over its debut.

This gives the Irish drama/comedy a total gross of £4.2 Million in the United Kingdom after 2 weeks of release.

Highest new movie this weekend

Highest new movie of the weekend celebrates the Halloween season as the horror movies directed by Daniel Stamm makes its debut at number 4.

The season peaked early this year with Smile~2022 and Halloween Ends having already made their mark on the box office and this movie makes its debut with £859,717.

Interestingly with halloween on a Monday this year both Smile~2022 and Halloween Ends suffered significant drop this weekend and couldn't capitalise on the season.

Event movies have become a staple of the box office in recent years and for those unable to get to the event Coldplay broadcast their latest concert in theatres starting on Thursday of last week.

Over the weekend the concert pulled in a total gross of £745,541 with repeat showings bound to push it over the Million mark in the coming weeks.

Giving Sonic the hedgehog 2 only a single weekend at the top of the UK box office, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore makes its UK debut at the top.

Also new this week is The Outfit from director Graham Moore which is new at 7 with £96,600 and Compartment No 6 from Juho Kuosmanen which enters at 12 with £42,999.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (@1)
  • Longest run - Sing 2 (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman (£39.2 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 8th - 10th April 2022

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

This third in the series of movies that serve as a prequel to the Harry Potter movies, starring Eddie Redmayne as the Beasts finder Newt Scamander the series has turned into an origins movie for Albus Dumbledore played in this series by Jude law.

The movie opens with a gross of £5.8 Million which is well below the last movie in the series Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald with an opening of £12 Million and the first movie in the series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which took £15 Million on its opening.

This series of movies has not touched the heights of the Harry Potter series which started 20 years ago with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which took £15 Million on its debut and ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which took £23 Million.

The movie is the 10th top movie of the year so far, and will end up most likely in the top 5, but it is debatable if Warner Bros. will see this as good enough to continue the movies in what should have been a 5 movie series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The blue speedy hedgehog which made its debut at number 1 last weekend falls to number 2 on its second weekend of release with £2.9 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.

this gives the movie a total UK gross of £10.6 Million after 2 weeks of release, this is more than double the take of the first movie at the same point of release.

The movie is the 6th top film of 2022 and at this rate bound to do even better.

The Bad Guys

Proving to be a smash hit is the latest movie from the DreamWorks animated stable which this weekend takes £1.1 Million, a 51% drop over last weekend, taking the movies total UK gross to £4.8 Million.

Morbius

Sony's Spiderverse movie drops to number 4 this weekend with £740,336, a massive 77% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of £5 Million after 2 weekends of release, it will most likely drop out of the top 5 next weekend and end its run with about £7 Million.

Its not been good for the super villain movie especially after the success last year of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Batman

Dropping to number 5 this weekend The Caped Crusader takes £623,866 on its 6th weekend of release, a 48% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total of £39 Million.

The movie is the top movie of 2022 so far, an honor it will loose in the coming weeks, but the film has been a success for Warner Bros. in fact it has been more successful tha Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice from 2016 which took £35 Million over its total 6 week run.

It has not been as successful though as Joker~2019 from 2019 which had taken £54 Million 6 weeks into its run on its way to £58 Million total.

A new trailer and poster has been released for upcoming movie Raya And The Last Dragon which can seen in full below.

Starring among others Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina the movie is directed by Don Hall/Carlos Lopez Estrada and it has a release date of 5th March 2021.

The new trailer introduces the 'con-baby' who is adorable and kick-ass and is bound to become a fan favourite as she joins forces with Raya, and we get our first real introduction of the dragon who seems to have confidence issues.

The poster is typical Disney fare and has the Dragon dominant with Raya taking more of a back seat this time but has her sword ready for action, we also get to see the mysterious circular stone in the background with the sun blazing through.

The movie will be released in cinemas across the world and on Disney+ Premium Access which will require an additional fee, Mulan was an extra 30 ($30) on top of the monthly fee, something HBO Max is not doing with their direct to VOD movies like Wonder Woman 1984.

Synopsis Of: The Movie

In a fantasy land called Kumandra, split into five different regions, a warrior named Raya searches for the last dragon in the world.

Check out the movie page for more information on this film.

Warner Bros. have today started a trend which could see an significant dent to cinema and Box Office figures forever by announcing that their 2021 film releases will go to HBO Max the same day as theatrical, but only in America.

Its only in America at the moment, as HBO Max is only available there, and although they have specially said 2021 at the moment if it works and makes them money it will likely be forever.

Box office figures this year have been poor to non-existent because of the pandemic, and they will effect the early part of 2021 at least which is why Warner have made this announcement, but if it proves successful then it is bound to last.

Disney are likely to announce something similar at they have their Disney+ platform which is proving to be popular, and with many anticipated movies, including the Marvel Universe Black Widow, set for 2021, many of which have been pushed from 2020, they also have a busy release schedule in the coming year.

Wonder Woman 1984 is a 2020 movie which is getting a day and date release on Christmas day 2020 and will be joined in 2021 by the likes of The Suicide Squad and Dune, along with the as yet untitled The Matrix 4.

Cinema has a long hard road ahead, and the new trend suggest that just maybe we wont ever have a box office like we have enjoyed in the past, sad time indeed.
