Sci-Fi drama Ad Astra makes its global debut at the top of the box office while Downton Abbey also does well as it expands it terretory count while IT Chapter Two drops to third place.

Ad Astra

Making its global box office debut at the top is this deep space exploration movie starring Brad Pitt which takes $45.2 Million over the weekend from 45 countries.

It is a fantastic debut for the James Gray movie and with Oscar being mentioned in the same breath as the movie it could see itself last the rest of the year on the box office.

Downton Abbey

The British aristocrats movie adds more location to its tally and climbs to number 2 on the global box office on its second weekend of release with $41 Million from 33 countries.

This pushes the Michael Engler directed movies total global gross to $61.8 Million.

IT Chapter Two

The Pennywise sequel falls to number 3 this weekend with a gross of $38.5 Million from 79 countries which pushes the films total to $385 Million after 3 weeks of release.

The film will fall far short of the originals $700 Million total global gross.

Rambo: Last Blood

Sylvester Stallone brings one of his most iconic characters to the big screen for one last time and despite a critical panning the film has still entered the box office at number 4 with $28.1 Million from 34 countries.

Hustlers

The Jennifer Lopez starring movie is not only getting critical praise but also getting Oscar mentions for its star as the film falls to number 5 on its second weekend of release with a gross of $20 Million from 19 countries.

This pushes the film total global gross to $73.2 Million.

A milestone was reached on the global box office this week and DC's Aquaman reaches the $i Billion mark for Warner Bros. and goes back to the top.

Aquaman

The DC Universe film goes back to the top of the global box office this week under much hype that the film has passed the $1 Billion mark.

This also means that for director James Wan he joins James Cameron as the only directors to have $1 Billion films that are not from the same franchise, a bigger feat than initially seems.

The superhero movie this week takes $45 million from a massive 80 countries which boosts the total global gross to $1.02 Billion.

Bumblebee

Falling from the top spot this week the Transformers movie takes $42 million from 65 countries to push its total gross to $364.7 million.

The film has performed well outside America and een this week only just misses out on the top spot, the good reviews and breath of fresh air from a new director on the series has helped the flagging robot franchise.

The Upside

The comedy drama is the top new film of the week, hitting number 1 in the US, the film takes $20.8 million from 18 countries.

For Nicole Kidman who has a starring role in this film its good news as she is also at the top of the global box office with a pivotal role in Aquaman.

Dragon Ball Super Broly

The manga cartoon hits 17 countries this week and goes to number 4 with a global weekend gross of $20.3 million, this pushed to films total gross to $54.3 million.

Spider Man Into the Spider Verse

The hit animated superhero movie is at 5 this week and takes $18.4 million from 66 countries to push its total to $302.3 million.

With the global release of any Star Wars films its going to feel like the world stops with baited breath watching how the film will perform, and this week is no different with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In the end Rogue One opens in the UK to £17 million, a very good opening and a shade above fellow splinter film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

When compared to Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens it doesn't compare, it is about half of the opening gross from this time last year, not surprising as there is less anticipation and this is Star Wars in uncharted territory.

There can be no complaining though, like Fantastic Beasts, we are going to get more of these films and as they find their feet and get fans then the grosses will grow and grow.

Fantastic Bests falls from the top after 4 weeks at number 1 to 3 and a weekend gross of £1.4 million, it is less than £10,000 behind the number 2 film Moana.

It has now taken £45 million in the UK and is the 39th top grossing film of all time.

With the new Star Wars film there were no other new films this week hitting the chart.

Longest running film this week is Trolls which has been around for 9 weeks and highest total grossing movie is Fantastic Beasts.

Historical chart

A year ago - A theme will start to emerge in the coming years is the Star Wars film at the top on this date and this time last year Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was new at the top, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 fell hard to number 5.

Five years ago - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows made its debut at the top while Arthur Christmas fell to number 3.

Ten years ago - Happy Feet made it 2 weeks at the top while the top new film was Eragon at number 4.

Fifteen years ago - There was no moving Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone as it stayed at the top for a 5th weekend while top new film was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham at number 3.

Twenty five years ago - The Addams Family was new at the top while Point Break fell to number 4 after 3 week at number 1.

We are all taking a deep breath as this weekend approaches but until then Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them makes its fourth weekend at the top while top new film is Office Christmas Part which debuts at number 4.

Warner Bros. clearly released this new entry into the Wizarding World at the right time as the film adds another £2.7 million (£4.4 million across the week) to its total which now sits at £42.3 million.

Highest new film of the week if bromance comedy Office Christmas Party, it enters at number 4 with a debut gross of £1.2 million.

The film is a Christmas based movie and as such I suspect it will make a swift exit from the box office one the festive season is over.

Highest total grossing film on the chart this week is Fantastic beasts and the longest running film is Trolls which has now been around for 8 weeks.

It will be interesting to watch what happens over next week with the new entry in Star Wars, last years Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens had a £34 million debut weekend, with the reviews so far for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are we looking at even better? Historical box office

A year ago - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 had its 4th weekend at the top and with the world waiting or the first Star Wars film in over a decade there were no new film inside the top 15, Peggy Guggenheim Art Addict was the top new film at number 25!

Twenty five years ago - Point Break made it 3 weeks at the top and with a quiet week for new releases there was nothing new on the top 10.
