This weekends box office is going to be an interesting watch. The global coronavirus will do a couple of things to cinemas attendance, it is keeping people at home as they self isolate and in many countries including the UK and US cinema owners have shut their doors to help prevent the spread of the virus.

At the UK box office this weekend, Friday, 20th March 2020, there are 2 new releases, originally there were more, including A Quiet Place Part II which would have made the box office look different, but many film have been put back to later this year or next year.

Can either of these two movie knock Onward from the top of the UK box office chart?

The Jesus Rolls

First up at cinemas this week is The Jesus Rolls, directed by John Turturro who also directed Mac in 1992.

It stars John Turturro who last starred in Gloria Bell (2019).

The film also stars Bobby Cannavale who last appeared in Motherless Brooklyn (2019).

Radioactive

Next on this weeks new release schedule is Radioactive.

This new movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy who's last film was Emma (2020)

It also stars Rosamund Pike who appeared in The Informer (2019).

The film is brought to us by 2 time director Marjane Satrapi.

Check back on Monday to see if these new releases enter the UK Weekend Box Office Chart.

Next Week

There is 1 new release in the shape of Vivarium which is in cinemas on Friday, 27th March.

There were plenty of contenders this last weekend that tried to topple the Marvel film Doctor Strange but none were good enough so the good doctor spends another week at the top.

A weekend gross of £3.4 million takes the films total UK gross to £15.7 million, very good indeed and on course to be one of the better Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Coming in highest is The Accountant starring Ben Affleck, a debut weekend gross of £1.6 million brings it in at number 3.

There are 3 other new film this week, at 4 is a Street Cat Named Bob, at 5 is Nocturnal Animals and at number 6 is The Light Between Oceans.

Bridget Jones's Baby is the top total grossing film of the week with an incredible £46.1 million and its is also the longest running film at 8 weeks.

Historical charts

A year ago - Spectre spent its second week at the top of the UK box office while Brooklyn came in highest at number 3.

Five years ago - The Adventures of Tintin The Secret of The Unicorn spent its second week at the top while In Time came in highest at number 2.

Ten years ago - Making its debut at the top of the box office was Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan while Saw III dropped to number 2.

Fifteen years ago - The Others was new at the top of the chart, it knocked off American Pie 2 which fell to number 2.

Twenty years ago - British film Brassed Off landed on the chart at the top, it knocked Dragonheart down to number 2 after 2 weeks on top.

Twenty five years ago - Dead Again remained at the top of the box office and on this week there were no new releases.

On the UK video chart this week Spectre manages to hold on to the top spot for a second week while war time drama Suffragette is the highest new film.

After a fantastic showing on the video chart last week there was no move for the latest Bond movie this week with sales too strong for any of the new releases.

Suffragette was the highest new film at 2, the film was released into UK cinemas on 16th October 2016 where it has a debut week at number 2.

The film put in 6 weeks inside the top 15 films in the UK before hanging around the box office for another 12 weeks and was still in some cinemas last weekend.

The film didn't bust any balls at the box office but did manage to rake in a fairly good £9.9 million over its run.

Also new on the video chart this week is: Brooklyn entering at number 3, The Intern new at number 8 and finally Paranormal Activity The Ghost Dimension at number 9.
