UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (@1)
  • Longest run - Belfast (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman (£37.8 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The speedy blue hedgehog returns in a sequel to his surprise smash hit movie Sonic the Hedgehog from 2020.

This time he is accompanied by his buddy Tails and Dr. Ivo Robotnik has brought along Knuckles to try and defeat Sonic.

The movie makes its debut with a fantastic £4.9 Million which is a tiny bit higher than the original movie but definitely in the same ball park.

The timing of the movie could not have been better and it beats the much anticipated Morbius, altohugh Sonic 2 has had far better reviews.

Morbius

The latest movie from the Sony Pictures Spiderverse of villains which also includes Venom lands at number 2 with a debut weekend gross of £3.2 Million.

This is lower than Venom and its sequel from last year Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but considering the negative critical review and word of mouth this is perhaps understandable.

Putting the movie against Sonic was probably not the best idea, it is the start of the UK Easter holidays and the younger audience has a better appetite for a video game adaptation rather than a movie based on a villain they have probably not heard of.

The Bad Guys

Completing a trio of new films at the top of the UK box office is the new movie from DreamWorks, the same studio that brought us the Shrek series of movies.

Positive reviews and the Easter holidays have taken the movie into the top 3 with a debut gross of £2.2 Million.

The Batman

After 4 weeks at the top the lastest incarnation of the Caped Crusader falls hard to number 4 this weekend with a 5th weekend gross of £1,2 Million, a small 25% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £37.8 Million over its 5 weeks of release and it is currently the top movie of 2022, and it is the 83 top movie ever in the UK!

Ambulance

The Micheal Bay directed Ambulance drama falls to number 5 this weekend with a second weekend total of £273,015, a 48% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total of £1.1 Million.

The Batman spends its 3rd weekend at the top of the US box office while the Japanese manga movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is the top debut at 2.

Horror movie X makes its debut at number 4 and The Outfit is a new movie at number 8 with $1.5 Million on its debut.

Global hit The Kashmir Files makes a new entry at number 9 with $1.4 Million while Sandra Oh stars in Umma which is new at 11 with $915,000 and finally Alice~2022 is a new entry at number 12 with $176,120.

The movie was a smash hit in Japan upon release at the end of December 2021.

Uncharted

Slipping down to number 3 this weekend is the former number 1 movie starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake from the video games series of the same name.

The movie takes $8 Million on its 5th weekend of release, a drop of only 14%, giving the movie a total of $125.9 Million and making it the 3rd top movie of 2022.

X

Director Ti West brings his latest horror movie to the big screen which makes its debut at number 4 this weekend with $4.4 Million.

The directors highest grossing movie to date is V/H/S which took $100,000 in 2012, so this is by far his biggest movie to date.

Dog

The feel good buddy movie from Channing Tatum drop to number 5 this weekend with $4 Million, a 21% drop on its 5th weekend giving the movie a $54.2 Million total and the 7th top movie of 2022.

Paramount Pictures have announced that Sonic The Hedgehog sequel will be called Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and there is a little hint that his buddy Tails will feature!

The first Sonic movie was released in February 2020 and was one of the last blockbusters released in 2020 before the pandemic shit movie theatres down.

It featured Jim Carrey as the villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik and went on to gross over $300 Million globally.

The hidden clue on the logo to suggest that Sonics friend Miles "Tails" Prower will feature, look at the 2, there are a couple of tails wagging.

Miles "Tails" Prower is Sonics best friend and is a fox with 2 tails that first appeared in the second Sonic game on the Sega Mega Drive, and all subsequent games.

The movie currently has a release date of April 8th 2022.

With no major releases over the last weekend the horror comedy Freaky remained at the top of the US box office for a second weekend.
