News from around the web

Star Wars Celebration is in full swing at the movie (it runs from April 7th - 9th) and of the more exciting news it has been announced that three new movies for the Star Wars series are in production.

The movies are directed by James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the last being of some interest as it will bring back the character of Rey from the sequel trilogy series played once again by Daisy Ridley.

The movie will cover the entire (fictional) history of the series with one showing how the Jedi came to be and learn to use the Force, one being set in the time-line of the TV show The Mandalorian which is after the events of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi and finally Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct a movie set 15 years after the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker showing how Rey rebuilt the Jedi Order.

There has been no mention so far of the Taika Waititi Star Wars Film, which is simply called Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars Film on IMDB.com, so who knows if that is still going ahead.

This plan does seem to be a more positive one for a film series that has totally lost its way since Disney took it over, and Rogue One A Star Wars Story aside has not produced movie which compliment the rich history of the much loved movies.

The TV shows on the other hand have been popular with the previously mentioned The Mandalorian being the best so far.

Time will tell if these movies get made, but the movie path and directors of recent years for the Kathleen Kennedy helmed Lucasfilms has been sketchy to say the least!

With the Chinese new year over the flood of films is starting to slow down and this weekend Avatar: The Way of Water goes back to the top of the global box office.

You may have missed this but yesterday, June 8th, is considered by fans of the series as Ghostbusters day, marked on that day as the original movie was released on this day in North America.

Jason Reitman, director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and son of the original director Ivan Reitman, during a celebration marking the event, announced officially that a fourth (or fifth depending how you count!) is in the works.

The movie will be code named Firehouse, and who knows this could be the title eventually, after in infamous HQ of the Ghostbusters in the original movie, which can be seen being bought by Ernie Hudsons character Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

At an event on Wednesday Reitman said he has just started working on a script with Gil Kenan, his co-writer on Afterlife.

Here are the highlights of the announcement

  • The movie will be set on Manhatten Island, New York City
  • It will feature the continued adventures of the Spangler family
  • It will feature Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) in a bigger role

No word yet on any other returning characters but Dan Aykroyd praised Afterlife a lot so an appearance from him is likely and Bill Murray seems to have buried him Ghostbusters demons so thats also likely.

Sigourney Weaver appeared in a weird cameo in Afterlife so its likely she may return, and Annie Potts could do with wrapping her story up, and even a cameo from Rick Moranis would be a treat.

No word on release or production dates but no doubt were looking at something like June 2024 which would nicely tie in with the 40th anniversary of the original Ghostbusters.

Now where is that sequel to the 2016 Ghostbusters~2016 movie we are all waiting for!

The man is a legend in the Star Wars universe but Harrison Ford wasn't at the Star Wars Celebration conference to talk Star Wars, he was there to talk Indiana Jones.

During the pre-conference show the actor who is best known to Star Wars fans for playing the legendary Han Solo took to the stage to reveal the first image from the new James Mangold directed movie.

He was also there to say happy 90th birthday to composer John Williams who was on hand with an orchestra, the legendary composer is not only responsible for composing the Star Wars theme but also the theme for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first movie to feature the Indiana Jones character.

The fifth movie in the series is set for a June 30th 2023 release, it is directed by James Mangold who takes over from series director Steven Spielberg, and Harrison Ford reprises his role as the title character.
