Black Widow

Falling to number 2 this week is the latest Marvel movie which takes $26.1 Million, a large 54% drop, from 49 countries.

The movie now has a total global gross of $314.9 Million after 3 weeks of release and is the 5th top grossing movie globally of 2021.

The new movie from celebrated director M. Night Shyamalan makes its global debut this week at 3 with $23 Million from 24 countries.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Falling to number 4 this week is the Space Jam sequel which takes $22.1 Million, a big 59% drop over last week, from 67 countries.

The movie has now taken $93.9 Million after 3 weeks of release and should break the $100 Million before next weekend.

Chinese Doctors

Another movie which is only released in China and has been a big global hit, this week taking $17.3 Million, a 60% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken $175.6 Million after 3 weeks of release.

The Chinese box office is far outpacing any other country at the moment and can be seen as a model of how to re-open your box office as two movies gross over $150 Million each.

Sequel movie My People, My Homeland and animated feature Legend Of Deification were so far ahead in the weekend takings not nothing else had a look in and the third place movie, Tenet, took a fraction over the same period.

Here is a quick look breakdown of the weeks top 15.

  • Number 1 - My People, My Homeland (1 weeks)
  • Highest debut - My People, My Homeland (@1)
  • Longest run - Onward (30 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Tenet ($307,100,000)

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies globally at the box office 2nd - 4th October 2020.

My People, My Homeland

The follow up to My People, My Country land on the Chinese box office at number 1 and hence lands on the global box office at the top with a weekend gross of $157.5 Million on its debut.

The movie directed by a whole host of directors and if it does as well at the previous movie could take near to $500 Million.

Legend of Deification

Called Jiang Ziya this animated fantasy tale hit the number 2 spot in China on its release being narrowly beaten by My People, My Country, but still the Teng Cheng and Li Wei directed movie took $151.7 Million to debut second globally.

Tenet

Falling to number 3 this weekend as the Christopher Nolan movie starts to slow down across the globe, this weekend it took $14.2 Million.

This pushes the movies total gross after 6 weeks to $307.1 Million.

The New Mutants

Disneys mutant movie goes back into the top 5 this weekend taking $1.95 Million at number 4.

This pushes the movies total global gross to $42.1 Million after 7 weeks of release.

Hocus Pocus

The Halloween favourite gets a re-release in America, where it debuted at number 2, and makes its global debut at number 5 with $1.95 Million, 27 years after the movie first debuted.

After 4 weeks at the top of the global box office Christopher Nolans Tenet is replaces, this week at least, by the Chinese release Leap which makes its debut at the top.

The Chinese box office is, at the moment, by far the highest grossing market and it is responsible for the high grosses of Tenet, Mulan, The Eight Hundred and now Leap.

Here is a quicklook breakdown of the top 15.

  • Number 1 - Leap
  • Highest debut = Leap (@1)
  • Longest Run - Onward (29 weeks)
  • Highest global gross - The Eight Hundred ($441,654,352)

Weekly breakdown of the top 5 global movies 25th - 27th September 2020.

Leap

Making its debut at the top is this Chinese movie from director Peter Ho-Sun Chan and starring Li Gong which takes $24.7 Million over the weekend on its debut.

The movie is only released in China at the moment and with Tenet still to open in some territories it will be interesting to see what to top looks like in the coming weeks.

Tenet

Moving from the top to number 2 after 4 weeks is the 'saviour of cinema' which quite frankly has struggles over its release so far, even in China.

This weekend the movie took $19.2 Million which brings its 5 week global total to $284.9 while it looks to cross the $300 Million mark which it could do by next weekend.

The Eight Hundred

As the movie starts to open in other territories outside China the movie falls to number 3 with $8.3 Million giving the hit movie a total gross of $441.6 Million.

This new global total means that after 7 weeks of release it is the highest grossing movie globally in 2020, beating out the previous holder Bad Boys For Life.

Greenland

Starring Gerard Butler this movie has had a hard time so far, a couple of moves of release date in the UK and US has meant that the movie will most likely go to VOD in many major markets.

Of the countries it has been released in it has taken $3.3 Million and is this week a re-entry on the global box office at number 4 and after 8 weeks on the chart has taken $17.6 Million.

Mulan

Disney's animated remake has had a hard time of it really, after being days away from a full on cinema release it was pulled because of the pandemic, had its release date moved a couple of time then went to Disney+.

It did get a cinema release in some countries, after complains for many people, and this weekend is at 5 with a weekend gross of $3.3 Million taking its total to $64.4 Million after 5 weeks of release.

As the global box office starts to recover figures are still limited to the studios willing to share them, but with the Chinese box office seemingly doing well The Eight Hundred is the top film of the weekend.

There are no new releases this week as the world waits the the saviour of cinema Tenet to be released next weekend but catalogue films once again do well.

With the starts of the revitalised box office in the UK and some new releases in the US, like Bill And Ted Face The Music, next weeks chart could be a lot different.

Here is the top 5 worldwide box office movies 21st - 23rd August 2020.

The Eight Hundred

Having been released in the Chinese market now for a couple of weeks the action adventure movie from director Hu Guan takes $8.2 Million over the weekend and is the countries top movie.

The movie has now taken $116 Million in its native terretory with a release in other countries still to come.

Unhinged

The Derrick Borte directed movie is at number 2 and takes $4.7 Million over the weekend from multiple territories for a $13.6 Million total after 4 weeks of release.

The movie in the top film this weekend in Australia, United Kingdom and United States.

Onward

The Pixar movie would have been a massive hot for the CGI studio had it not been for the pandemic, but still 24 weeks on the movie is still on the global box office.

This weekend the movie is at number 3 and takes $4.5 Million taking its total to $116.9 Million.

The movie is number 1 in Italy this weekend.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

The first harry Potter movie falls to number 4 this weekend after its 'debut' at the top last weekend with $4.1 Million.

The movie has taken just over a Billion dollars since its release, 19 years ago!

Yarn

This Japanese love story is the top film in its native country this week and sits at number 5 on the global box office with $2.2 MIllion.

The movie has taken $3.5 Million in total.

Spirited Away is arguably one of director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli best films but in 2001 when the film was originally released it was banned in China, that ban was lifted this week and the film finally got a long overdue release.

There was another animated film released this week in China, and the rest of the world, this week, Toy Story 4, a brand new animation from Pixar and the fourth film in the very successful Toy Story Series.

In most of the world Toy Story 4 has topped the box office, including most of Europe and the United States, but in China the incredible happened and the 18 year old animation beat the brand new films.

This is quite incredible, and good news for cinema and the Chinese box office, I suspect many people in China have seen the film as it has been available on home video for years, but it would seem the public want to see this film on the big screen.

Its not all bad news for the Pixar movie as it has landed on the box office at number 2, but with Spirited Away taking $27.8 Million dollars (converted) compared with $13.2 Million (converted) the Toy Story film took half that of the Japanese animation.

Here is the Chinese top 5 Box Office Weekend of 21st June 2019

  1. Spirited Away $27,842,673
  2. Toy Story 4 $13,209,667
