News from around the web

The box office had a slow start to the year with the shut-downs due to the ongoing global pandemic, but when they did re-open the public were slow to go back and there were many films released earlier in the year which under performed.

As the year progressed the public gained confidence in sitting in dark rooms with strangers and the year ended with the biggest movie of the year as Marvels MCU was the big outright winner.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movie of 2021 at the North American box office.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The Marvel/MCU/Sony movie was released late into December but beat expectations and has become the top movie of the year in North America through expectation, hype and the fact that it is every Spider-Fan's perfect movie.

The film hit the top of the 2021 list on its opening weekend and has so far taken over $500 Million, and as the movie is only 3 weeks old there is clearly more to come.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Another Marvel/MCU movie but this time very much a Disney product, and the movie can just at the point in late summer when the public was ready to go back to cinemas, and as many had not been in a cinema for over a year they flock to see the first Asian American superhero.

The movie took $224.5 Million during its 13 week box office run and took over from Black Widow when it did become the top movie of 2021 for a few weeks.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Sony had a good year in 2021, and although this is not directly a MCU movie it has enough connection to be closely associated, and the sequel movie did better than expected in its early autumn release.

Taking an excellent $212.4 Million over a 12 week span the movie is still currently showing in some cinemas in North America so its total could end up higher.

Black Widow

One of the first major releases in North America once cinemas began to open again, the solo outing for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow didn't do as well as expected, but it got a Disney+ streaming release at the same time as its cinemas release.

Taking $183.6 Million over its 14 week cinematic run the movie was briefly the top movie of the year.

Fast & Furious 9

One of the first movie to get delayed at the very start of the pandemic which closed nearly all North American cinemas the 9th instalment in the Fast & Furious series finally got a release in June of this year, a year after its original scheduled release.

A 15 week run in cinemas gave the movie a total US gross of $173 Million, which even taking the delay into consideration is poor for a movie in this franchise.

Here is the top 10 movies in North America during 2021

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home - $467.3 Million
  2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - $224,5 Million
  3. Venom: Let There Be Carnage - $212.4 Million
  4. Black Widow - $183.6 Million

Spider-Man: No Way Home got its debut in the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, it has scored a massive £7.6 Million (including Ireland) on its opening day.

This is bigger than the opening gross for the last Bond movie No Time To Die which took £4.8 Million on its first day.

To date it is the UK's top movie of 2021 with over £96 Million, and it is the third top movie of all time behind Stat Wars: The Force Awakens and fellow Bond movie Skyfall.

No Time To Die was released in a time when the public was just beginning to get confidence in going back to public place safely which could have effected the movies opening day, although with COVID-19 cases going up in the UK again the opening day for Spider-Man: No Way Home is very impressive.

With this in mind it looks like we are heading for the biggest opening weekend in the UK and Ireland in the last few year, it will be inserting to see if it can top the 2021 list at the same time?

It was another good weekend for Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds at the tUK box office as their comedy action movie Free Guy spends a second weekend at the top with hardly a drop on its debut gross.

Highest new movie of the weekend is People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan which brought people out to the cinema but not in the number was expected while new action movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins can only manage a number 6 debut with £542,265.

Also new on this weekends top 10 is The Night House which enters at number 9 with £315,610.

Uk box office top 5 breakdown weekend 20th - 22nd August 2021

Free Guy

Surprise hit of the summer starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend taking £2.2 Million, a tiny 8% drop over its debut gross last weekend.

This could be contributed to the fact the UK public is starting to gain confidence going out the the cinema again, and equally it is a movie squarely aimed at the teen audience and the UK school are still out on their summer holidays.

The movie has taken £7.19 Million after 10 days of release and should be a top 10 movie of 2021 by next weekend.

The PAW Patrol: Movie

Again benefitting from the school holidays the Children's TV favourite remains at number 2 for a second weekend with a gross of £1.03 Million, although showing its limited appeal it is 57% down on last weekend.

The movie has taken £4.4 Million on its 10 days of release.

People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan

The hit BBC 3 TV show about a fake reality pirate radio show from London went big screen this weekend and landed at number 3 on the UK box office with £896,992.

It was perhaps expecting to be a bit bigger in the UK as the TV show has created a lot of hype and won BAFTA's, it will probably do well until the schools go back as it has big teen appeal.

The Suicide Squad

The comic book super villain movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £653,885, a 39% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £12.3 Million and the fourth top movie of 2021.

Jungle Cruise

Rounding out the top 5 is Disney's action movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt which takes £652,473, a small 23% drop thanks to the school holidays, giving the movie a total of £10 Million and the 7th top movie of 2021.

Godzilla Vs. Kong has a second high grossing weekend and retains the top spot on the US box office and with no studios releasing any big movies the top new film is Voyagers at number 5.

As confidence grows in the industry with the success Warner Bros. is having with the bog monster movie more hits are coming in the weeks ahead and studios are starting to reschedule their much delayed potential blockbusters.

Here is the US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Godzilla Vs. Kong (2nd Week)
  • Highest debut - Voyagers (@5)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (20 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Croods: A New Age ($56.71 Million)

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies at the US box office 9th - 11th April 2021.

Godzilla Vs. Kong

Warner Bros. must be finally pleased that one of their movies is re-starting the US box office after the closures of the global pandemic, they tries with Tenet at the end of the summer last year which failed but the big monster fight movie is hitting the right spot.

On its second weekend of release the movie takes a remarkable $13.38 Million, although this is a drop of 72% over last weekend, a higher drop than you would normally see for a big grossing debut.

The film has taken a very good, for the pandemic era, $69.5 Million since its release and is the top grossing movie in America for 2021.

Nobody

Another film which is enjoying success is the former number one movie which climbs back to number 2 this weekend with $2.65 Million, only 14% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a $15.6 Million total gross from 3 weeks of release.

The Unholy

Despite the poor reviews for this Evan Spiliotopoulos directed film, and falling to number 3 this weekend, this horror movie is enjoying some surprise success.

This weekend the film takes $2.4 Million, a 25% drop from last weekend, which takes its gross to $6.73 Million on its second weekend of release.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Disney's latest animated feature is still doing well on the box office and after 6 weeks of release it takes $2.14 Million, up 4% from last weekend, for a total of $35.24 Million.

Voyagers

Highest new movie of the week lands at number 5 as director Neil Burger scores a top 5 movie with an debut gross of $1.35 Million.

During Prime Minister Boris Johnsons outline to re-opening that was announced on 22nd February cinemas will be allowed to open their doors, maybe, in stage 4 from May 17th.

Sourced from BBC

This will be good news for the industry, and cinema goers who have not been able to see movies on the big screen since the end of last 2020 when Wonder Woman 1984 was the big new movie.

It is also good news for the cinema industry which is suffering during the latest lock down and many small independent theatres may have no choice but to close for good.

The bad news of course is that after 6 weeks of having to close their doors to the public it looks like there will still be another 3 months at least of shutdown to ensure the country keeps moving in the right direction.

Also with studios having to re-shuffle their schedules and many blockbusters having gone to streaming already there needs to be some confidence that people will return to cinemas.

There are films like Tom And Jerry, The Croods: A New Age, Mortal Kombat and the much delayed MCU movie Black Widow which is due on 7th May, a move for that is almost certain now.

What is more positive is that film like No Time To Die and Top Gun: Maverick can possibly stick to their release dates of October 8th and July 9th respectively.

This date is conditional of COVID-19 cases and deaths not spiking, but the UK has done a great job under the current lockdown and the vaccination programme is going really well so fingers crossed to light can be seen at the end of the tunnel.
