This weekend marks the lowest grossing total weekend since 4th September 2020 when Tenet was the top movie of the weekend and the country was still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic.

See How They Run~2020 remains at the top for a second weekend while the only new movie of the weekend is the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream at number 10.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - See How They Run~2022 (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Moonage Daydream (@10)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£82.8 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 19th September 2022

Remaining at number 1 this weekend is the comedy murder mystery from director Tom George starring Saoirse Ronan which takes £984,779 on its second weekend of release, a small 15% drop from last weekend.

The movie remains at the top largely because there was no major new release on the box office this weekend, the movie has taken £2.8 Million over its 2 weeks of release.

When there is nothing new at the cinema people go and see the old movies they missed, hence the Brad Pitt action/comedy jumps back up to number 2 from 8 on its 7th weekend of release with £325,252, a small 6% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £10.3 Million at the UK box office over its 7 weeks of release.

Another big movie jumping back up the box office is the sequel movie to Minions which jumps back from 5 to 3 on its 12th weekend with £321,746, a 16% drop over last weekend.

The Despicable Me universe movie has now taken £45.1 Million in the UK over its 17 weeks and is the second top movie of 2022 in the UK.

Making a magnificent movie back into the top 5 bouncing from 9th to 4th is the movie of the summer which takes £320,963 on its 17th weekend on the box office, and this weekend gross is an amazing 3% higher than last weekend.

The movie is the top film of 2022, and will end up that way by the end of the year as Avatar: The Way of Water wont have the steam to get past a billion in 2022 as its release is so late in the year.

The movie is also the 8th top movie of all time in the UK having jumped over Star Wars: The Last Jedi this week, I would say the £89 Million of Avengers: Endgame is out of its range but you simply never know with this film!

The animated feature from the Warner Bros. DC Universe jumps one place to number 5 this weekend with £307,920, a 16% drop over last weekend.

the movie has taken £14.8 Million in the UK over its 8 weeks of release.

Highest new movie this weekend

Highest new movie of the weekend comes in at number 10 this week with a documentary about the Ziggy Stardust years of David Bowie directed by Brett Morgen.

The movie takes £181,467 on its debut weekend.

Blade Runner 2049 might not have set the box office on fire when it was released 3 weeks ago but it has managed something not many film do and go back to the top of the chart after being knocked off.

It was a relatively quiet weekend at UK cinemas and the Blade runner sequel took £1.8 million to go back on top, nearly 50% down on last weekend.

This means the film has now managed £12.7 million on its UK run, its hard to put this in context of the original movie which 3 weeks in had made £0.8 million.

If take inflated ticket prices into play then the original would have made £4.3 million at this stage so the sequel is over £10 million ahead.

Highest new film of the week, and despite the appalling reviews, is Geostorm starring Gerard Butler, which enters at number 2 with £1.6 million.

The weather disaster movie is a typical summer blockbuster movie so being released so late in the year probably meant the studio had little faith in the film.

Last weeks top film, The Lego Ninjago Movie, falls to number 3 this week with £1.3 million and a total gross so far of £5.5 million.

We have a change of longest running and top total grossing film this week with IT being around for 7 weeks and grossed a total of £32 million.

Historical charts

A year ago - Animated film Trolls took over at the top from The Girl On The Train which fell to number 3 after 2 weeks on top.

Five years ago - Madagascar 3: Europes Most Wanted was the top new film of the week entering the box office at number 1 while Taken 2 fell to number 3 after 2 weeks on top.

Ten years ago - Ratatouille spent a second weekend at the top while the top new film of the week was Stardust starring Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Fifteen years ago - Vin Diesel starred in XXX which was the top new film of the week at number 1 while Lilo and Stitch fell to number 2 after 2 weeks at the top.

Twenty years ago - Hercules spent its second weekend at the top while top new film was Shooting Fist at number 2.

Twenty five years ago - The animated Beauty and The Beast spent its second weekend on top while top new film Strictly Ballroom entered at number 2.

You would think there isn't much to talk about this week other than the amazing debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but as it happens there were a couple of, albeit much smaller, new releases.

First of all with the dust settling on Star Wars tis time to reflect on its debut, a massive first day and first weekend takes it to the top of the UK box office with £34 million, not the highest, that still is with Spectre but that had a 7 day opening as opposed to this 4 day opening.

The Force Awakens did have a better Friday - Sunday opening though, although its not like for like as these event films are generally front loaded.

The Force Awakens should go on to challenge Skyfall as the top film ever in the UK and could still become the highest grossing film of 2015 should it continue on current track.

Coming in new at 2 is Sisters, good reviews have increased the popularity of the film and the debut of £1.2 million is non too shabby considering it came up against such a massive tour de force.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 falls from number 1 after 4 week in that position to number 5 with £0.5 million and a total UK gross of £26.6 million.

Highest total grossing film on the box office this week is Spectre, at number 6 this week, with £92.7 million, it will not overtake Skyfall as the top film in the UK now.

Historical charts

A year ago - The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies stayed at the top of the box office for another week with Night At The Museum Secret of The Tomb the highest new film at 3.

Five years ago - TRON Legacy debuted on the chart at number 1 knocking The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader down to number 2 after a single week.

Ten years ago - King Kong was the top new film making its debut at the top while The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe fell to number 2.

Now the dust has settled on the WWDC keynote speech given last night (morning?) by Steve Jobs where he announced the next version of the iPhone, aside from the new front camera, speed and iOS4 operating system, the big news was the screen and it's HD goodness.

First of all the screen uses what is being called a Retina display, Jobs claims it's better than OLED. The displays pixels are 78 micrometers wide which allows the screen to have 4x the resolution of the iPhone 3Gs. This means the screen has 326 pixels per inch, the naked eye can only see 300 pixels per inch, which means that the screen is better than human eyesight.

What this means in layman's terms is that the iPhone can handle 780p HD video, and according to reports the screen is amazing. The screen is 960x640 pixels in resolution and has a contrast ration of 800:1, pretty good for a screen so small.

This wont stop you from getting neck ache, and could possible make your eyes hurt even more when watching Lord of the Rings on the device, but at least that Blu-ray transfer you make will look absolutely amazing, and if you were to attach the iPhone to a HDTV then you could potentially have your own portable video library.
