News from around the web

Marvel unleash their first blockbuster of the year to the delight of fans and like every year for the last few years it smashed into the top of the UK box office.

Captain American Civil War is the biggest assemble of Marvel superhero characters outside of an Avengers movie and takes over at the top with a weekend take just shy of £20 million.

Compared to the previous Marvel films this is fairly normal but the is by far the highest grossing Captain America movie.

Projection for the movie should be high, but Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice gave a wake up call last month as to how a superhero movie can perform below average.

The Jungle Book falls down to number 2 this week on its 3rd week of release with £5.7 million, its total is £33.2 million to date.

Highest total grossing movie on the box office is Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice which has taken £36.5 million to date.

Historical charts

A year ago - The Avengers Age of Ultron remained at the top while Far From The Madding Crowd was the highest new film at number 2.

Five years ago - Thor was the top new film of the week entering at number 1 knocking Fast Five down to number 2.

Ten years ago - Ice Age: The Meltdown stayed put at the top of the box office leaving highest new film 16 Block to enter at number 2.

Fifteen years ago - Bridget Jones's Diary stayed for another week at the top while The Mexican made its debut at number 2.

Twenty years ago - Comedy The Birdcage was the top new film across the country at number 1, finally shifting Top Story from the top, it slid to number 2.

Twenty five years ago - Biopic The Doors made its debut at the top of the box office while Highlander II The Quickening fell into the runner up spot.

There is no move at the top of the UK video chart this week as Disney's Cinderella keeps a tight hold of the number 1 spot for a second week. Highest new film is at number 2, a DTV (direct to video) film about the Kray brothers called Rise of the Krays.

Released to coincide with the cinematic release of Legend starring Tom Hardy as the twin brothers. Rise of the Krays stars Simon Cotton and Kevin Leslie as the twins and documents their early life before their infamy as gangsters.

The film was released in 16th May 2015 but made no impact on the box office.

Also new this week are: Far From The Madding Crowd and number 3, Monsters Dark Continent at 4.
