Top films globally in 2017: Beauty and the Beast top the global box office in 2017

2017 at the global box office was a story of remakes, sequels and superheroes where a beauty and a beast in live action was the top film of the year while the 8th Furious film wasn't far behind.

Beauty and the Beast, the live action version, was the top at the global box office during 2017 helping Disney to be, by a long way, the biggest studio of 2017 with 6 of the top 10 films coming from the mouse house.

Universal also did well in the runner up spot with Fast and Furious 8 and Despicable Me 3 at 2 and 3 as the long established series bucked a trend of diminished returns for sequels throughout the year.

Warner did well with the DC cinematic universe and the horror hit IT filling in the lower end of the list although Justice League failed to make the top 10 (although it is still on general release at the end of 2017).

Here is the top 10 films of 2017 across the globe.

  1. Beauty and the Beast - $1.2 billion
  2. Fast and Furious 8 - $1.23 billion
  3. Despicable Me 3 - $1.03 billion
  4. Star Wars: The Last Jedi - $953.36 million
  5. Spider-Man Homecoming - $880.16 million
  6. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 - $863.73 million
  7. Thor: Ragnorak - $847.32 million
  8. Wonder Woman - $821.84 million
  9. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazars Revenge - $794.86
  10. IT - $698.06

Marvel are a power house not to be messed with, although this weekend Warner Bros. though it would have a go and failed miserably and King Arthur Legend of The Sword couldnt tough Guardians of The Galaxy at the global box office.

With $115.2 million from 57 countries this week Guardians easily retains its position as top film, this gross means that the film has gone past the half billion mark and has now taken $630.5 million after 3 weeks.

King Arthur did manage second place, although only just, with $43.8 million from 52 countries, but considering the amount of hype the film has had Warner would have been hoping for far more.

Released in 34 countries Alien Covenant marks its debut at number 3, the hotly anticipated film from Ridley Scott didn't get a US release but did make a show in much of Europe.

Nearly beating King Arthur the film takes $42 million for the week despite getting for less than favourable reviews from critics, its US release is this coming weekend which will be a big test.

There is a bit of a battle going on between Fast and Furious 8 and Beauty and The Beast for top film of the spring season and at the moment Beast is winning with $1.2 Billion total gross.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 opened up is a number of major territories this week and duly remains at the top of the global box office.

The James Gunn directed film starring Chris Pratt got its US debut this week and with release in 56 countries takes $268.8 million on its second week.

This pushed the films total global gross to $427.6 million, well on its way to a billion, this first Guardians film made $774 million and this could make the extra quarter of a billion to be yet another Marvel film to make the mark.

Showing great promise is Baahubali 2 The Conclusion which this week is at number 2 with $47 million from 11 countries, this pushes the film total gross to $147 million.

Two film on the top 5 this have grossed over a billion, Fast and Furious 8 at number 3 has taken $1.158 billion and Beauty and The Beast has now taken $1,185 billion and is at 5 this week.

There are no new entries on the global box office this week, no surprise with the wider release of Guardians this week.

With the release of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 we see a new film taking over at the top as the Marvel film takes over from Fast and Furious 8.

Released globally but not yet in America the films which has gained a massive following after the first film takes $101.2 million on its debut, largely from the UK, Brazil and Australia.

Guardians 2 this week is released in 37 countries so still has much of the globe to go so expect the gross to ballon over the coming weeks and a $1 billion gross is on the cards.

Fast and Furious 8 this week made it over the $1 billion mark and became the top American film ever released in China, edging out Fast and Furious 7 from the top.

The film currently sits at number 2 on the global box office with a weekly gross of $87.7 million from 67 countries most of which is from the non-American market.

Also making an impressive show this week is Shock Wave which takes $24.4 million from 4 countries, mainly China, and is at number 4 this week.

Highest total grossing movie on across the globe this week is Beauty and The Beast which has now grossed an incredibly $1.14 billion.

As the film pushed itself over the billion mark at the global box office Fast and Furious 8 (The Fate of the Furious in America) hold the top spot for a third weekend.

Fast 8 drops nearly 50% of its taking from last week and this week manages just $19.4 million to bring its US total to $192.7 million.

Highest new film of the week is How To Be A Latin Lover which is new at number 2 with a good $12 million debut.

For a smaller independent film this is a great opening, it did play to a largely latin American audience which is to be expected.

Also new this week is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which is new at 3 with $10 million and Emma Watson and Tom Hanks in The Circle which disappoints with a number 4 debut and $9.3 million.

Highest total grossing movie on the US box office this week is Beauty and The Beast which has now grosses nearly $500 million, it is also the longest running film with 7 weeks on the chart.
