News from around the web

The UK box office came to a grinding halt in January of 2021 as the global pandemic took full grip of the country so there was no chart until the middle of May.

Once cinemas opened it was a slow start Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway coming out on top for the first few weeks, it wasn't until late June when Fast & Furious 9 was released that things started to hot up, then things started to go from strength to strength.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movie of 2021 at the UK box office.

No Time To Die

The much delayed 25th movie in the Bond series finally got released at the very end of September 2021 and after a massive debut weekend where it took nearly £26 Million the movie managed to do what Tenet the previous year couldn't, it got people mack in cinemas.

The movie, which is still on general release got mixed reviews from critics, and has an ending with split Bond fans, but to date the movie has taken £96.4 Million over 12 weeks of release and is the third highest grossing movie of all time in the UK.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The last movie from the MCU universe to be released in a year when Marvel/Disney/Sony had a fantastic return to cinemas, and after all the hype and rumours about what the multiverse would bring the movie took a massive &pond;31.9 Million on its debut in the UK.

The film was released in mid December so it still raking in the cash as your local multiplex, and will most likely overtake No Time To Die with its total gross as well as be only the third movie in history to gross over £100 Million.

With a total gross already over £50 Million after just 2 weeks it will most likely feature quite high on the top movies of 2022 as well.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Another MCU movie on the list of top movies if 2021 as the much anticipated new superhero hit cinemas in early September with a debut gross of £5.7 Million.

Over a 9 week run at the box office the movie took £21.8 Million making it the third top movie of the year

Dune

Visionary director Denis Villeneuve is fast becoming one of the most respected film makers in Hollywood and his much anticipated version of the classic sci-fi noval Dune hit cinemas in October with £5.8 Million.

The box office had a slow start to the year with the shut-downs due to the ongoing global pandemic, but when they did re-open the public were slow to go back and there were many films released earlier in the year which under performed.

As the year progressed the public gained confidence in sitting in dark rooms with strangers and the year ended with the biggest movie of the year as Marvels MCU was the big outright winner.

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movie of 2021 at the North American box office.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The Marvel/MCU/Sony movie was released late into December but beat expectations and has become the top movie of the year in North America through expectation, hype and the fact that it is every Spider-Fan's perfect movie.

The film hit the top of the 2021 list on its opening weekend and has so far taken over $500 Million, and as the movie is only 3 weeks old there is clearly more to come.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Another Marvel/MCU movie but this time very much a Disney product, and the movie can just at the point in late summer when the public was ready to go back to cinemas, and as many had not been in a cinema for over a year they flock to see the first Asian American superhero.

The movie took $224.5 Million during its 13 week box office run and took over from Black Widow when it did become the top movie of 2021 for a few weeks.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Sony had a good year in 2021, and although this is not directly a MCU movie it has enough connection to be closely associated, and the sequel movie did better than expected in its early autumn release.

Taking an excellent $212.4 Million over a 12 week span the movie is still currently showing in some cinemas in North America so its total could end up higher.

Black Widow

One of the first major releases in North America once cinemas began to open again, the solo outing for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow didn't do as well as expected, but it got a Disney+ streaming release at the same time as its cinemas release.

Taking $183.6 Million over its 14 week cinematic run the movie was briefly the top movie of the year.

Fast & Furious 9

One of the first movie to get delayed at the very start of the pandemic which closed nearly all North American cinemas the 9th instalment in the Fast & Furious series finally got a release in June of this year, a year after its original scheduled release.

A 15 week run in cinemas gave the movie a total US gross of $173 Million, which even taking the delay into consideration is poor for a movie in this franchise.

North American top 5 box office breakdown 22nd - 24th October 2021

Dune

The movie got delayed by over a year, and after the failure of last years Tenet its wasn;t much of a suprise that Warner Bros. did, but this week the Denis Villeneuve vision of Frank Herbert classic sci-fi, impossible to film, book finally hits the box office.

The movie comes in with a weekend gross of just over $40 Million, potentially lower than expected as the movie is also available on HBO Max, altohugh as Halloween Kills has shown movies can do well as the box office even when on streaming the same day.

The film which stars Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson might have a short stay at the top but the response has been god enough that a sequel is almost guaranteed.

Halloween Kills

Hitting the top spot last weekend the movie was always destined for a single weekend at the top and this week takes $14.5 Million on its second weekend of release, a large 71% drop over last weekend, maybe dur to its availability on streaming?

The movie has now taken $73.1 Million at the American box office, and although the movie might get a boost next weekend as its Halloween we should see the movie sink down the box office quite rapidly now.

No Time To Die

Bond movie number 25 has not quite hit the same stride in America as it has across the rest of the world and this week takes $11.8 Million, a 50% drop over last weekend.

The movie has been on the box office for 3 weeks now and has a US total gros of $120 Million making it the 7th top movie of 2021.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

The superhero villain smash hit sequel falls to number 4 this weekend with $9.1 Million, a modest 45% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of $181.8 Million, very good for a sequel and its running almost parellel with its predecessor, the movie is now the 3rd top movie of 2021.

Ron's Gone Wrong

The new animated movie from directors Sarah Smith, who brought us Arthur Christmas and Jean-Philippe Vine makes its debut at number 5 this week with $7.3 Million.
