News from around the web

Captain Marvel was without much surprise the big film of the weekend taking the world by storm as it launched with a lot of hype and anticipation for the female led Marvel film.

Captain Marvel

The 21st Marvel Cinematic Universe film tops the global box office with ease this weekend with a global box office of $455 million including previews from 54 countries.

A fantastic start for the super hero movie which stars the ever green Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson that should see it past the $1 billion mark which would make it the 7th Marvel film to do so.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The third dragon movie falls to 2 this week with a weekend gross of $36.6 million from 66 countries to boost its total to $435 million.

Green Book

The Oscar winning film starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali moves up to 3 this week with $30 million from 67 countries pushing its global gross to $242 million.

Alita: Battle Angel

Falling to number 4 this week is the Battle Manga movie directed by Robert Rodriguez which takes $14.7 million from 75 countries, the highest on the top 5, to boost its total global cume to $385 million.

A Madea Family Funeral

Tyler Perry's creation which he also stars and directs is at 5 this week with $12.1 million from 5 countries to bring its cume to $46.1 million.

Making his solo directorial debut Stephen Merchant takes his Fighting With My Family to the top of the UK box office on its debut weekend with The Aftermath also new at 6.

Fighting With My Family

Based on a true story the film was produced by Dwayne Johnson who also appears in the film and makes its debut at the top with a weekend gross of just over £2 million.

This is a typical British feel good movie similar to The Full Monty or Four Wedding And A Funeral and should hang around for quite a while on the UK box office.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The brick movie falls from the top after 3 weeks with a gross of £1.4 million on its fourth weekend of release.

This brings the films total UK gross to £15.8 million which is about £11 million below that of the first movie at this stage of release.

Instant Family

Falling to 3 this week but still doing well is the Mark Wahlberg starring film which takes £1.1 million on its 3rd weekend, this pushes its total gross to a respectable £8 million.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

This third Dragon movie falls to 4 with a gross of £1.04 million pushing its total to £17.2 million, its still the highest grossing movie released in 2019.

Green Book

Winning the Best Film Oscar and Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Mahershala Ali has pushed this film back to number 5 with a weekend take of £737,659 taking its total gross to £7.4 million.

The Aftermath

Keira Knightley's new film makes its debut at 6 this week with an opening gross of £589,965.

The Favourite

An Oscar win for Olivia Coleman pushes this film up to number 11 this week with £287,797 taking its total to £16.2 million.

Bohemian Rhapsody

19 weeks in and the Queen bio-pic is at number 12, helped probably buy the 4 Oscars it picked up including one for star Rami Malek, a £278,829 weekend takes the film to £54.2 million and the 25th highest grossing film in the UK ever.

Its been a quiet start to the year so far with nothing setting the box office alight and although this week is no different we do have 3 new releases in the top 5 headed by How To Train Your Dragon 3 at the top.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The third film in the How To Train Your Dragon series takes over at the top of the UK box office with a £5.3 million opening weekend.

Compared to the previous 2 film this is on par with the first part but below the second part which opened to £7 million plus.

Green Book

The Oscar nominated film starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali makes its debut at number 2 this week with a £1.6 million opening.

Glass

The James McAvoy and Bruce Willis starring film falls from the top spot this week to number 3 where is grosses just shy of a million pound on its 3rd weekend.

The film has now taken £8.6 million in the UK but at the moment looks unlikely to beat either the other 2 film in the series, Split and Unbreakable, in UK grosses.

Escape Room

Entering the chart at number 4 this week is this run of the mill horror film which directed by Adam Robitel which takes £820,000 on its debut.

Mary Queen of Scots

After a couple of weeks at number 2 the historical drama falls to number 5 this week with £782,000 which boosts its UK total gross to £6.6 million.
