Elemental takes over at the top of the UK box office this weekend with a margin of just £2,775 more than last weeks top movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The new pixar film had a hard time in the US going up agains The Flash but in the long run ot looks like Elemental will actually do better at the box office.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny falls to number 2 with a huge drop of 57% which could see the movie fail to become the summer blockbuster it should be.

The Marksman drops down the chart as The Croods: A New Age holds strong along with Wonder Woman 1984.

  • Longest run - The War With Grandpa (17 weeks)*
  • Highest total gross - The Croods: A New Age ($43,947,065)*
  • *Not including re-releases

Here is the top 5 US box office breakdown 29th - 31st January 2021.

The Little Things

Starring a powerhouse of Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto the murder mystery makes its debut at the top of the box office with $4.8 Million.

Not a bad debut for a movie during the COVID-19 pandemic with many cinemas closed, but clearly a lower debut than normal for all 3 leads.

The Croods: A New Age

The animated movies starring Nicholas Cage has gone from strength to strength during its cinema run despite being available on digital streaming through much of it!

This weekend the movie took $1.84 Millon wich it 2% up from last week, the total for the movie after 10 weeks is $43.9 Million.

Wonder Woman 1984

The super hero movie from the DC Universe has had a hard time at the cinema, perhaps because it got mediocre reviews and was available on HBO Max from day one.

The movie has takes $1.3 Million this weekend, down 19% from last weekend, for a $39.2 Million total after 6 weeks.

The Marksman

Falling from the top to number 4 this week is the Liam Neeson movie which takes $1.2 Million, 38% down, for a $7.8 Million total after 3 weeks.

Compared to Neesons last movie, Honest Thief which also came out during the pandemic last October it is nearly $2 Million lower as that movie had taken $9.5 Million after 3 weeks.

Monster Hunter

The Paul W.S. Anderson video game adaptation falls to number 3 this weekend with $740,000, 10% down from last weekend, for an $11.1 Million 7 week total.

With cinemas in the US having a hard time with a mixture of closures and re-openings in different states not to mention the lack of big new releases its good to see a new number 1 movie and one starring a big name.

Robert De Niro stars in the kids movie The War With Grandpa which quite easily tops the US box office this weekend pushing Tenet down to the runner up spot.

With no big blockbuster movies hitting cinemas until Christmas there is a chance we could see a lot of yo-yo'ing on the box office iver the coming weeks, and a ot of smaller independent movies doing better than expected.

Here is this weeks US box office Quickview.

  • Number 1 - War With Grandpa (1st Week)
  • Highest debut - War With Grandpa (@1)
  • Longest run - Unhinged (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back ($292,674,960)

Here is the US box office top 5 breakdown 9th - 11th October 2020

The War With Grandpa

Director Tim Hill's new movie gets released during a period when there is very little in the way of competition and coupled with its high profile star Robert De Niro the movie takes over at the top with a weekend gross of $3.6 Million.

The movie is squarely aimed at children and time will tell if it has enough for a long run at the top and with Tenet a continuous threat to reclaim the top and a new Liam Neeson action movie out this weekend it could be a short spell.

Tenet

Christopher Nolans mind bending movie falls from the top after 5 weeks with a weekend gross of $2.1 Million this weekend, 22% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 6 week total gross of $48.3 Million and is by a wide margin the top movie of recent months despite the fact it is being seen as a flop, but during the current time of closures what is a decent gross.

Hocus Pocus

The 27 year old Halloween favourite drop to number 3 this weekend with $1.1 Million, the movie has now taken $42.6 Million since its release in 1993.

This weekends gross is 40% down from last weeeknd.

The New Mutants

The mutant movie from Disney starring Maisie Williams falls to number 3 this weekend with $685K, 34% down from last weekend, taking its gross to $21.9 Million after 7 weeks of release.

Unhinged

Falling to number 5 this weekend is the Russell Crowe starring movie which takes $660K this weekend, 22% down from last weekend, for a very nice $19.3 Million over 9 weeks of release.

We all know there are no new big blockbusters coming out at the moment, and Tenet is still at the top for a 6th weekend, but comparing this to the amazing 6 week number 1 run of Joker from 2019 is unfair.

I suspect Tenet would not have been a 6 weeks number 1 under normal circumstances, 2 maybe 3 at the most, and although the total gross in the UK would have been in the £10 of million it would not have had the press the movie got.

Still we are where we are and its till the top film in the UK, and Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite! is the top new film at number 2!

Here is a quick look breakdown of this week top 15 box office.

  • Number 1 - Tenet (6 weeks)
  • Highest debut - Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite! (@2)
  • Longest run - Onward (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross = Tenet (£15,948,191)

Here is a breakdown of the top 5 movies in the UK 2nd - 4th October 2020.

Tenet

The Christopher Nolan directed movie is now 6 weeks at number 1 equalling the runs of The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Joker (2019), it takes just £628.2K this weekend which is only 3% down from last weekend.

This puts the movies total gross at £15.9 Million after 6 weeks, and as expected it is the top grossing movie since cinemas re-opened and the 6th highest of 2020 overtaking Dolittle.

Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite!

Top new movies of the weekend is the third film in the Cats & Dogs series which takes £456.5K on its debut.

This is a movie very much aimed at children, can we expect a massive drop next weekend or will the current climate keep it in the top 5?

After We Collided

After a fantastic start to its box office run the Roger Kumble directed teen drama falls to number 3 this weekend with £390.2K, a drop of 24% from last weekend.

The movie has now taken quite an amazing £3.1 Million after 5 weeks of release.

The movie has now entered the top 20 movies for 2020 at number 20 and with its current pace at the box office could go higher.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

The third Bill & Ted movie has had a hard time with its box office takings, but it does spend a third weekend on the chart this weekend with a gross of £146.5K, although this is a 32% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 3 week total of just over £1 Million, not bad for a movie which can onto VOD day and date with cinema.

The Elfkins

Both new releases in the top 5 this weekend were children's film and this Ute von Munchow-Pohl directed movie lands at 5 with £131.3K on its debut.

After 4 weeks at the top of the global box office Christopher Nolans Tenet is replaces, this week at least, by the Chinese release Leap which makes its debut at the top.

The Chinese box office is, at the moment, by far the highest grossing market and it is responsible for the high grosses of Tenet, Mulan, The Eight Hundred and now Leap.

Here is a quicklook breakdown of the top 15.

  • Number 1 - Leap
  • Highest debut = Leap (@1)
  • Longest Run - Onward (29 weeks)
  • Highest global gross - The Eight Hundred ($441,654,352)

Weekly breakdown of the top 5 global movies 25th - 27th September 2020.

Leap

Making its debut at the top is this Chinese movie from director Peter Ho-Sun Chan and starring Li Gong which takes $24.7 Million over the weekend on its debut.

The movie is only released in China at the moment and with Tenet still to open in some territories it will be interesting to see what to top looks like in the coming weeks.

Tenet

Moving from the top to number 2 after 4 weeks is the 'saviour of cinema' which quite frankly has struggles over its release so far, even in China.

This weekend the movie took $19.2 Million which brings its 5 week global total to $284.9 while it looks to cross the $300 Million mark which it could do by next weekend.

The Eight Hundred

As the movie starts to open in other territories outside China the movie falls to number 3 with $8.3 Million giving the hit movie a total gross of $441.6 Million.

This new global total means that after 7 weeks of release it is the highest grossing movie globally in 2020, beating out the previous holder Bad Boys For Life.

Greenland

Starring Gerard Butler this movie has had a hard time so far, a couple of moves of release date in the UK and US has meant that the movie will most likely go to VOD in many major markets.

Of the countries it has been released in it has taken $3.3 Million and is this week a re-entry on the global box office at number 4 and after 8 weeks on the chart has taken $17.6 Million.

Mulan

Disney's animated remake has had a hard time of it really, after being days away from a full on cinema release it was pulled because of the pandemic, had its release date moved a couple of time then went to Disney+.

It did get a cinema release in some countries, after complains for many people, and this weekend is at 5 with a weekend gross of $3.3 Million taking its total to $64.4 Million after 5 weeks of release.
