Monsters of all various types have been in the order of the day in recent weeks, Logan then Jong last week and this week Disney bring us their live action retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

The Mouse House have done a fantastic job in recent years of bringing their animated classic to a live audience, Cinderella and The Jungle Book are two which did really well.

Now is the time of the greatest animation of all time to get a live action film and audiences are clearly wanting it as the film lands to an incredible $170 million opening weekend.

Kong in its second weekend fell to number 2 with a gross of $28.8 million, this brings the films total US box office to $110.1 million after 10 days of play.

Logan at 3 is now the highest grossing Wolverine movie is the US and with $184 million in total grosses could catch the lowest X-Men movies.

Also new this week is The Belko Experiment at number 7 with a debut gross os $4 million.

Longest running film on the top 10 is once again Hidden Figures which has now been around for 13 weeks, but Logan is now the highest total grossing movie.

The Mighty Kong conquers all at the top of the US box office this weekend as Kong Skull Island takes over at number one from Logan.

Starring a host of big Hollywood names including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson the film opens in the US to a great $61 million.

Considered a re-boot the last time Kong appeared on screen was the Peter Jackson directed film from 2005 which was not received well.

Falling to number 2 this week after a week at the top is Logan, a $37 million second weekend brings the films total gross to $152.6 million.

Hidden Figures is yet again the highest total grossing movie on the US box office while La La Land is the longest running movie with 14 weeks on the chart.

This third and reported last of the Wolverine stand alone movies makes its US box office debut at the top this weekend with a fantastic $85 million.

The Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart starring film has got excellent reviews across the board for its daring move away from the traditional super hero movie and has benefited in the process.

For an R rated movie it is the fourth highest opening in the US ever and most likely will go on to be the highest grossing stand alone Wolverine movie.

Falling down to 2 this week, but still holing its own is last week top film Get Out which takes $26.1 on its second weekend of release.

The little known horror film has now taken $76 million after 10 days of release in the US.

Also new this week is The Shack which is at 3 with $16 million and Before I Fall which is at 5 with $5 million.

Longest running film on the US box office is La La Land which has now been around for 13 weeks and the highest total grossing is Hidden Figures with $158 million.

Mention must go to Moonlight which after the Oscar fiasco with La La Land this week goes national and increases its gross by 260%, this week it is at 12 with $2.5 million.

A very quiet weekend on the UK box office which has The Lego Batman Movie holding onto the top spot for a third consecutive week.

There is a virtually static top 6 with the Mark Wahlberg starring Patriots Day the top new film at 7.

On its third weekend at the top Lego Batman takes £2.8 million which brings its total gross in the UK to £23 million, compared to The Lego Movie this is still running a shade under.

The film took over £5 million for the period Monday - Sunday which made it the top film for the week as well.

A third weekend at number 2 is therefore in order for Fifty Shades Darker with £1.5 million for the weekend and £20.3 million in total.

With Sing, John Wick Chapter 2, Hidden Figures and The Great Wall all holding tight in the top 6 the highest new film is Patriots Day at number 7.

As mentioned, Patriots Day about the Boston Marathon bombing is the top new film and took £843,380 for the weekend and is one of the actors lowest debuting movies.

La La Land, which had a good, if confusing night at the Oscars this year, takes the honour of being the top total grossing movie this weekend with a total gross of £29 million and the longest running movie with a 7 week run.

Fifteen years ago - Monsters, Inc. spent its third week at the top and with a strong top 5 the highest new film was Don�t Say A Word down at number 6.

Twenty years ago - On its third weekend of release Ransom remained at the top while top new film was Michael starring John Travolta at number 3.

Twenty five years ago - The Prince of Tides made its debut at the top of the box office knocking off Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country after only a week at the top.

Dethroning the The Lego Batman Movie this week is horror film Get Out which makes its debut with a very good $30.5 million weekend.

The film is a debut for writer/director Jordan Peele and makes its debut over the Oscar weekend where Moonlight and La La Land made all the headlines.

Batman in his Lego took a small tumble down to number 2 this weekend with a good $20 million gross, this brings the films total US gross to $133 million.

Very little else happened on the US box office this weekend with a couple of Oscar hopefuls still hanging on waiting to see if the award boost will give them a little more life.
