Global box office QuickView

  • Highest debut - The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure (@9)
  • Longest run - Spider-Man: No Way Home (7 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.7 Billion)

Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 28th - 30th January 2022

Spider Man: No Way Home

Seven weeks in now for the multiverse Spider-Man movie as it starts to challenge the global box office to be the top grossing movie of all time, an honour currently held by Avatar which has taken $2.8 Billion since its release in 2009.

The movie has still to be released in China which is currently still unset and its unknown if a release will happen.

This weekend the movie takes another $32.1 Million from 64 countries which pushes the movies total to $1.7 Million, so it still has a long way to go before it even goes over the $2 Billion mark, but it is achievable.

Its quite an achievement that the movie still only has a 23% drop over last weekend, meaning that people are most likely seeing the film multiple times.

The movie is naturally the top movie of 2022 and its gross is getting to the point where it may be hard to beat with $370.9 Million taken this year.

Sing 2

The animated sequel is proving to be a massive hit just like its prequel Sing from 2017 as the movie takes $22,2 Million in second place where it jumped back to this week, this is an amazing 17% increase over last weekend and the movie is released in 63 countries.

The movie is edging towards the $300 Million mark as this weeks its total gross hits $267.9 Million after 6 weeks of release.

This places the movie as the second top film of 2022 globally.

Scream

The horror movie sequel falls to number 3 this week as it starts its decent down the box office with a weekend gross of $13.8 Million from 56 countries, a 39% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total gross of $106.2 Million after 3 weeks.

Nightmare Alley

Director Guillermo del Toro latest movie jumps up the box office to number 6 this weekend with $6.6 Million from 42 countries, a 26% increase over last weekend, giving the movie a $22,9 Million total after 2 weeks.

The Kings Man

Six week of release now for the prequel movie as it falls to number 5 this weekend with $5.9 Million from 47 countries, a 25% drop, giving the film a total global gross of $114.4 Million.

It was a weekend when everyone thought the big budget film King Arthur Legend of The Sword was going to dominate, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2 still took the crown and comedy Snatched come in highest on Mothers Day weekend.

Its the second weekend of release for Chris Pratt and director James Gunn and Guardians easily holds on to the top spot with a massive $63 million, 57% drop from last weeks debut.

This brings the films total gross from 10 day in cinemas to $246.1 million, its inline with other big Marvel films and well ahead if the first Guardians film.

Highest new film honour goes to Snatched starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn about a mother and daughter who get kidnapped in a foreign country, good timing to release on Mothers Day.

The film makes its debut in second place with a weekend gross of $17.5 million, although with mediocre reviews we could see this slip away quickly.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and with a massive $200 million+ budget the studio were hoping for a mega hit on their hands, but King Arthur Legend of The Sword has limed into US cinema in third with $14.7 million.

Beauty and the Beast is once again the longest running film on the US box office, 9 weeks now, and its the highest total grossing movie with nearly half a billion pound in takings.

A very quiet weekend on the UK box office which has The Lego Batman Movie holding onto the top spot for a third consecutive week.

There is a virtually static top 6 with the Mark Wahlberg starring Patriots Day the top new film at 7.

On its third weekend at the top Lego Batman takes £2.8 million which brings its total gross in the UK to £23 million, compared to The Lego Movie this is still running a shade under.

The film took over £5 million for the period Monday - Sunday which made it the top film for the week as well.

A third weekend at number 2 is therefore in order for Fifty Shades Darker with £1.5 million for the weekend and £20.3 million in total.

With Sing, John Wick Chapter 2, Hidden Figures and The Great Wall all holding tight in the top 6 the highest new film is Patriots Day at number 7.

As mentioned, Patriots Day about the Boston Marathon bombing is the top new film and took £843,380 for the weekend and is one of the actors lowest debuting movies.

La La Land, which had a good, if confusing night at the Oscars this year, takes the honour of being the top total grossing movie this weekend with a total gross of £29 million and the longest running movie with a 7 week run.

Historical Chart's.

A year ago - Deadpool held on strong at the top of the box office while top new film was Grimsby which entered at number 2.

Five years ago - Spending a third week at the top was The Woman in Black while the top new film was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which made its debut at number 2.

Ten years ago - Remaining at the top was Hot Fuzz while the top new film was The Number 23 staring Jim Carey which entered at number 3.

Fifteen years ago - Monsters, Inc. spent its third week at the top and with a strong top 5 the highest new film was Don’t Say A Word down at number 6.

Twenty years ago - On its third weekend of release Ransom remained at the top while top new film was Michael starring John Travolta at number 3.

Twenty five years ago - The Prince of Tides made its debut at the top of the box office knocking off Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country after only a week at the top.

The very last weekend of the summer season and there is very little movement with the scare fest of Dont Breathe remaining in pole position.

Figures are low this weekend and Dont Breathe manages to remain at the top with $15.7 million which brings its total US gross to a nice but unremarkable $51.1 million.

Little else is happening this week and the highest new film limps in at number 6, The Light Between Oceans takes just shy of $5 million on its debut.

This basically means there are lots of films yo-yoing up and down the chart with Suicide Squad remaining at number 2 and Petes Dragon going back up to number 3.

Suicide Squad is the top total grossing movie this week with $297.4 and Bad Moms and Jason Bourne share the honour of longest running with 6 weeks each.

Next week sees the kick off of the Autumn season with some exciting new film coming in the next 4 months.
