This week marvel proved they can add new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in style by taking the latest addition to the top of the UK box office.

With a £9.2 million opening it is very good for a new IP in the Marvel series, in comparison Ant-Man made £4 million on its opening.

With Doctor Strange hitting the top, last week top film, Trolls, falls to number 2, a second weekend take of £3.5 million sees the film get to £ 14 million after 10 days.

Bridget Jones's Baby is the top total grossing film on the chart at the moment with £46.6 million and has out grossed all the other Bridget Jones films.

The BFG is the longest running film, the Steven Spielberg film has now been on the chart for 14 weeks.

Historical Charts

A year ago - Spectre made its debut at the top of the box office and because the highest debuting film of all time while Hotel Transylvania 2 fell to number 2.

Five years ago - The Adventures of Tintin The Secret of The Unicorn made its debut a the top knocking off Paranormal Activity 3 which fell to 2.

Ten years ago - Saw III was the top new film of the week making its debut at the top, it knocked off The Departed which fell to number 3.

Fifteen years ago - American Pie 2 remained at the top for a second weekend while Legally Blonde was the top new film at number 2.

Twenty years ago - Dragonheart stayed at the top and with nothing of note being released Dracula Dead and Loving It was the top new film at number 6.

Twenty five years ago - Dead Again made its debut at the top of the box office, it knocked off City Slickers which fell to number 2.

This weekend Jack Reacher gave it a good go but in the end her was not good enough to stop the Trolls from hitting the top on its debut weekend.

The new IP from Dreamworks hits the top with a weekend gross of £5.4 million which is about average for an animation from the studio, Kung Fu Panda 3, the last film from them took £4.7 million on its opening.

If things go as usual Trolls could get somewhere in the £10 million mark especially with a fairly decent debut.

The Girl on The Train falls from the top this week after a couple of weekends at the top, a £2 million weekend takes the film to £17.7 million after 3 weeks of release.

Also new this week is Jack Reacher Never Go Back which lans in the runner up spot with £2.6 million, this is in the ballpark, but lower, of the first film with took £3.5 million on its debut.

Longest running film of the week is The BFG which has been around now for 13 weeks and the highest total grossing movie is Bridget Jones's Baby now on £44.5 million.

Historical charts

A year ago - Hotel Transylvania 2 stayed at the top for a second week while top new film was Paranormal Activity The Ghost Dimension at number 3.

Five years ago - Halloween took Paranormal Activity 3 to the top of the box office on its debut while Johnny English Reborn fell to number 2 after 3 weeks.

Ten years ago - The Departed stayed at the top for a second week while highest debuting film was Barnyard at number 3.

Fifteen years ago - American Pie 2 stayed at the top while America's Sweethearts made its debut at number 2.

Twenty years ago - New at the top was the fantasy film Dragonheart while The Nutty Professor fell into the runner up spot after 2 weeks at the top.

Twenty five years ago - Making its debut at the top was City Slickers while Drop Dead Fred fell to number 3.

With the release of the latest Bond movie on home video there was never really any doubt as to what would be at the top this week, and Spectre reaches number one on its debut.

Spectre was released at UK cinemas as 26th October 2015, an unusual day for a film release as it was a Monday, but it gave it a full week release.

This full week gave the film a £41.2 million pound opening which is the highest ever in the UK, but with most film opening on a Friday this is a bit misleading, although arguably the built up speculation from Skyfall meant it may well have done the feat anyway.

Of course the film entered at the top of the box office where it stayed for 3 weeks, its second and third weeks grosses being more than most film make in either a week or a full run.

Unlike Skyfall though the film did burn quick and bright then fade, for a film of this size an 11 week run is good but not great although it has spent 5 weeks in cinemas outside the top of the box office.

The total gross to date in the UK is £95.1 million and it was the highest grossing film in the UK in 2015, although Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the highest grossing film released in 2015.

It is the 3rd highest grossing film in the UK ever. In comparison to Skyfall is fell short, the previous Bond film was the first film in Britain to make over £100 million and is the 2nd highest grossing film.

Worldwide the film has taken $879.9 million and is the 40th top grossing film ever, compared to Skyfall it again falls short, that film took over $1 billion across the world and is the 14th highest grossing.

Hotel Transylvania 2 falls to number 2 this week after a couple of weeks at the top.

It was half term in the UK last week and as often during a school holiday an animated feature hits the top of the video chart in a well times release by its studio.

This week its Hotel Transylvania 2 which makes its video chart debut at number 1 knocking The Martian down to number 2.

HT2 was released on 16th October 2015 where it entered the UK box office at the top with a first weekend gross of £6 million, a very good debut.

It saw a second weekend at the top the following week before it descended and in total spent 9 weeks on the box office.

Worth a mention is the original Hotel Transylania film which flies back up the chart this week to number 3 this week.

After just a single week at the top The Martian falls to number 2 this week.

Also new on the video chart is: Crimson Peak at number 5 and The Program at number 20.

The last instalment in The Hunger Games series makes its debut at the top of the global box office thanks largely to big debuts from the UK and China.

A debut weekend of $247 million globally is on par with the rest of the series and the film should end the series on a strong note, despite lacklustre reviews.

Ending its run at the top after 4 weeks is Spectre which this week adds $80.3 million to its global gross.

A runaway hit for the Bond franchise Spectre has now taken $677.8 million globally, this is on par with Skyfall but that film had good legs unlike Spectre which seems to be tailoring off, $1 billion could be tough.

Spectre is also the highest grossing total gross on the chart this week.

The Night Before is also new on the global stage making its debut at number 6 with $10.1 million.

Here is the full global box office:
