This week on the UK home video charts animated hit The Secret Life of Pets takes over from X-Men Apocalypse at the top.

The Secret Life of Pets was a massive hit for Universal that was released on 24th June 2016 and it hit the top of the box office on its debut with £9.5 million, the 74th best UK opening.

The film spent 3 weeks at the top before making a very slow decent down the box office, it spent an incredible 14 weeks in total on the top 15.

The total gross for the film in the UK is £35.8 million which makes it the 68th top grossing film while globally it took $864.2 million (£696 million) and is the 50th top film across the world.

Last weeks top film, X-Men Apocalypse, fell down to number 3 this week after a week at the top.

Also new this week is Independence Day Resurgence, sequel to the 1996 hit film it made number 2 on the box office on 24th June.

Worth noting is the flurry of Christmas films that are starting to pop up in the home video charts, this week we have Arthur Christmas at 9, How The Grinch Stole Christmas at 10 and Elf at 11.

UK Box Office Report Weekend 11th December 2015: Four at the top for Mockingjay, Grandma highest new film at 19! Retaining its position at the top of the UK box office this week is The Hinger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 which has now spent 4 weeks as the number 1 film.

Historical charts

A year ago - The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies was the new film at the top of the box office knocking Paddington down to 2.

Five years ago - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader made its debut at the top knocking Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 down to number 2.

Ten years ago - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe was the top film in the country knocking Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire down to number 2 - (something looks familiar there)

Fifteen years ago - How The Grinch Stole Christmas made it 2 weeks at the top while 102 Dalmatians was the highest new film at number 3.

Twenty years ago - The Santa Clause was the top new film of the week knocking Goldeneye down to number 2.

A third week at the top for The Hunger Games: Mockingly Part 2 in the wake of little in the way of new releases in the UK.

The box office is on hold at the moment waiting for one of the biggest releases of the year which left room for Mockingly to make £2.2 million.

This brings the total UK gross for the last of The Hunger Games films to £23.3 million after 3 weeks of release.

Highest new film of the week is Christmas with the Coopers, an all American movie about family meeting up for the holiday season.

A very low debut gross of nearly £700,000 puts the film at number 5, little chance of this film having longevity at the box office though.

Highest total grossing film on the box office is Spectre which has to date grossed over £90 million and this week is at number 3.
