News from around the web

Disney take the top two spots at the US box office this weekend although with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever staying at the top it means the new animated tale Strange World limps into second place.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery makes an impressive debut at 3 on limited release while Devotion is new at 4.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (3rd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Strange World (@2)
  • Longest run - Smile~2022 (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($367.6 Million)
  • Total US top 15 this weekend - $107.4 Million

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 25th - 27th November 2022

Remaining at the top for a third weekend is the Marvel movie sequel to Black Panther which takes $45.9 Million over the post Thanksgiving weekend, a small drop of 32% over last weekend.

The movie is tracking behind the original but this weekend pushes its total gross to $367 Million, quite a way behind the $500 Million of Black Panther three weeks into its run.

The movie will hence most likely finish below that of the original which took over $700 Million at the North American box office.

Highest new movie this weekend

The new Disney animated movie falls below expectation at the US box office during a time of big change at Disney with the old CEO Bob Chapeck being replaced by former CEO Bob Iger!

The movie lands on the North American box office at number 2 with a Thanksgiving post weekend gross of $18.6 Million.

In comparison the previous Disney animated movie (not Pixar) was Encanto from the same time last year and that grossed over $27 Million on its debut, and box office takings were still low due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Netflix release their much anticipated sequel movie in limited cinemas for a limited run and the movie lands very nicely at number 3 on the box office this weekend.

The movie takes $13.2 Million on its debut weekend, comparing to the original Knives Out is not a fair comparison as that movie got a full theatrical release but released in 2019 it took $26.7 Million on its debut, and with this getting good reviews you can imagine what it would have achieved with a full theatrical release!

A poor set of reviews given to this, dare I say poor mans Top Gun Maverick as it lands at number 4 on the box office this weekend.

The movie takes $9 Million on its debut with a swift drop down the box office bound to follow!

Falling to number 5 this weekend after its debut at 2 is the Ralph Finnes and Anya Taylor-Joy starring movie which takes $5.2 Million this weekend, a 42$ drop.

This gives the movie a total North American gross of $18.6 Million after 2 weeks of release.
