Marvel and Disney return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after an 18 month absence with Black Widow which makes its debut at the top of the UK box office.

With such a massive new movie no studio was going to compete against it so this is the only new movie on this weeks top 15 box office, although further down there was new entries for To Be Someone directed by Ray Burdis, The Truffle Hunters directed by Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw and Tove directed by Zaida Bergroth to name a few.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Widow (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Black Widow (@1)
  • Longest run - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (£18.3 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 9th - 11th July 2021

Black Widow

The movie may have had to wait over a year and been delayed a number of time because of the global pandemic but the MCU returns with force and a weekend gross of £6.88 Million, it is already the 6th top movie of 2021.

This beats the highest debut of a movie during the pandemic set by Fast & Furious 9 a couple of weeks ago which was £6 Million.

The movie is also available on Disney+ with a extra fee which will damage the movie potential, by how much we will have to wait and see.

The movie has had very positive review and good word of mouth will take it forward, and co-star Florence Pugh steals the show and sets herself up for future MCU movies.

Fast & Furious 9

Falling from the top of the box office to number 2 is the ninth movie in The Fast Saga which this week takes £1.09 Million, a large 59% drop from last weekend.

This give the film a total UK gross of £13 Million over its 3 weeks of release and its currently the second highest grossing movie of 2021.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

It seems there is no stopping Peter Rabbit as he spends his 8th week inside the top 3, this week he falls to 3 with £546,981, a slim 34% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken £18.3 Million over its 8 weeks of release and is the top grossing movie in the UK in 2021, so far.

A Quiet Place Part II

Director John Krasinski's silent horror movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £261,410, a better than expected 39% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £10.9 Million and 6 weeks and place of number 3 on the top 2021 movies list.

In the Heights

Hanging on at number 5 is the musical adaptation from Jon M. Chu which takes £232,045 on its 4th weekend of release, a 50% drop, giving the movie a total gross of £3.8 Million.

No big new releases this week gives Fast & Furious 9 a chance to spend a second weekend at the top of the UK box office.

There were no new movies that entered inside the top 5 this week with the top debut Freaky

Also on the chart this week there were new entries for Another Round at number 9 with £205,266, Violet Evergarden: The Movie at number 14 with £54,946 and finally Daisy Quokka: Worlds Scariest Animal at 15 with £52,780.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Fast & Furious 9 (2nd weekend)
  • Highest debut - Freaky (@6)
  • Longest run - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (7 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (£17.4 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown 2nd - 4th July 2021

Fast & Furious 9

The Justin Lin directed ninth instalment of The Fast Saga stays at the top of the Uk box office for a second weekend with £2.6 Million, a 55% drop from last week.

The movie is on its second weekend of release and has a UK gross of £10.8 Million.

Compared to the previous movie in the franchise, Fast & Furious 8, its less than half the total gross, but of course in the current box office climate it is an unfair comparison.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

The runaway smash of the summer, the Peter Rabbit sequel movie remains at number 2 for the 6th weekend and this week takes £,830,560, which is basically the same as last weekend.

The movie has been a massive smash hit in the UK, no doubt fuelled by fan favourite James Cordon as the voice of Peter, and has taken £17.4 Million in the UK.

This is by far the top grossing movie of 2021 which didn't start until 7 weeks ago, it will be interesting to see if it can keep its lead with Fast & Furious 9 doing so well and the new MCU movie Black Widow out this coming week.

In the Heights

The Jon M. Chu directed movie is proving to be a big hit in the UK and this weekend takes £466,156, only 32% down on last weekend, giving it a total UK gross of £3.3 Million.

A Quiet Place Part II

The Emily Blunt starring horror movie sequel takes £425,798 this weekend, 29% down, for a total gross of £10.3 Million.

Interestingly the movie is actually running parallel with its predecessor and could potentially beat its total UK gross.

Cruella

This has been a surprise hit for Disney and this weekend spends a 6th weekend inside the top 5 with £410,789, a very slim 11% drop from last weekend.

The movies total Uk gros is now at £8.4 Million after its 6 weeks of release.

Sequel movie The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard got a Monday release last week and with a full weeks box office figures tops the chart, but musical In The Heights is the top movie over the Friday - Sunday frame.

Videogame Monster Hunter make a debut at number 9 with a £150,000 debut and In the Earth has to make do with an entry at number 13 with £58,000.

  • Highest debut - The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (@1)
  • Longest run - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (5 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (£15.2 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 18th - 20th June 2021

The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard

Making its debit at the top of UK box office this week is the sequel movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson which got its release in Monday.

The movie takes £1.6 Million across the whole week and takes £1 Million over the Friday - Sunday frame which would put it at number 3 behind Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and In The Heights

Bad reviews for the movie means it may be short lived, the original movie from 2017 took £1.9 Million on its debut before a 5 week run on the box office.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

Remaining at number 2 this week is the Peter Rabbit sequel movie which takes £1.1, a 28% increase from last weekend.

This has the movie back at the top of the box office over the weekend frame and gives the movie a £15.2 Million total over 5 weeks of release.

It is the top grossing movie in the UK for 2021 and the top grossing movie over the pandemic period, which will be coming to an end with the lockdown set to finish in July.

In the Heights

Director Jon M. Chu's adaptation of the hit broadway musical enters the box office at number 3 this weekend with £1.07 Million, just shy of the Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway total for the weekend and was nearly the top movie over the 3 day weekend.

The movie would of course have been the top new entry at number 2 had it not been for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard extended debut run.

A Quiet Place Part II

John Krasinski's horror hit falls from the top after 2 weeks to number 4 this weekend with £1.02 Million, a 22% drop over last weeeknd.

Three weeks on and the movie has taken a very respectable £8.2 Million at the UK box office.
