Black Widow and Space Jam 2 fought it out for the top spot this weekend with the Marvel MCU movie coming out on top and remaining at number 1 for a second weekend.

Space Jam: A New legacy made its debut at number 2 while The Forever Purge and The Croods: A New Age also made new entries inside the top 5.

Continuing the new releases Escape Room: Tournament of Champions just missed a place on the top 5 making its debut at 6 with £278,097 and documentary feature Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) was new at 10 with £62 Thousand.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Widow (2nd weekend)
  • Highest debut - Space Jam: A New Legacy (@2)
  • Longest run - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (£18.6 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 18th July 2021

Black Widow

The Scarlett Johansson starring movie remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend with £1.8 Million, a quite large 74% drop from last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £11.2 Million after 2 weeks of release and its the fourth top grossing movie of 2021 so far.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Making its debut at number 2 this weekend is the sequel movie to 1996's Space Jam which took £1.3 Million over the weekend.

Compared to the original its far lower as the 1996 original took £4.6 Million on it's debut weekend, its a little unfair considering the global pandemic, but I would have thought this movie would have taken less regardless.

The Forever Purge

The fifth movie in the long running series makes its debut at number 3 with £720,032.

The highest grossing movie in the series is 2018's The First Purge which took £1.7 Million on its debut.

The Croods: A New Age

Another sequel hitting the box office this weekend is the animated sequel starring Nicolas Cage which makes its debut at number 4 with £696,563.

The original movie, The Croods was released in 2013 and took £5.3 Million on its debut, even considering the pandemic this is a disappointing debut for the sequel.

Fast & Furious 9

The ninth Fast movie falls to number 5, from 2, on its 4th weekend of release with a gross of £446,126, a large 59% drop.

This movie seems to be sinking faster than expected and after 4 weeks has taken £14.14 Million, although it is currently the second top grossing movie of 2021.

The MCU take a second weekend at the top of the global box office as Black Widow remains at number 1, but Space Jam: A New Legacy makes a strong challenge for the top on its second weekend.

The Space Jam sequel is the real top new movie at number 2, although it did get a release in Russia last week where is took $194,073, which makes Chinese movie The Day We Lit Up the Sky the top new movie making its debut at number 6 this weekend with $11.8 Million.

Global box offie QuickView

  • Number 1 - Black Widow (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - The Day We Lit Up the Sky (@6)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (30 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Fast & Furious 9 ($591.2 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 18th July 2021

Black Widow

The Marvel movie which got delayed due to the pandemic remains at the top of the global box office this weekend with a gros of $56.1 Million from 49 territories, a large 65% drop from last weekend.

This gives the Scarlett Johansson starring movie a $264 Million total after 2 weeks of release.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

In reality the top new movie of the weekend but a Russian release last weekend means it actually climbs to number 2 with $54.6 Million from a huge 65 countries.

This gives the movie a total gross of $54.8 Million after 2 weeks of release.

Chinese Doctors

Falling to number 3 this weekend is the Chinese drama which takes $43.9 Million from just 1 country, only an 18% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken a very respectable $136 Million take after 2 weeks.

Fast & Furious 9

Highest grossing movie on the global box office at the moment, The Fast Sage movie takes $36.2 Million, a 32% increase over last weekend, from 58 countries for a $591.2 Million total after 9 weeks.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

Released in a few countries last weekend, the horror sequel makes its top 10 debut this weekend with $12.2 Million, 93% higher than last week, from 19 countries, giving the movie a $13.3 Million total to date.

Is it a sequel or a remake? 24 years after the original Space Jam which starred Micheal Jordon comes the follow up which has been given a U rating in the UK by the BBFC.

The movie stars among other basketball legend LeBron James and Boogie Nights star Don Cheadle.

The movie is directed by Malcolm D. Lee who also directed The Best Man from 1999.

Movie Synopsis

Superstar LeBron James and his young son, Dom, get trapped in digital space by a rogue AI. To get home safely, LeBron teams up with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang for a high-stakes basketball game against the AI's digitized champions of the court -- a powered-up roster called the Goon Squad.

After nearly 25 years we're about to get a new Space Jam movie and today Warner Bros. drops the first trailer.

First thing to notice is that this takes a whole different approach to the first movie and as many people are commenting there is a definite vibe of Ready Player One.

Next, LeBron James ain't half bad in this trailer, star of the original Space Jam was Micheal Jordan who at the time was criticised for his acting ability, but the Los Angeles Lakers star looks the part.

Finally its great to see James turn into a cartoon, and equally, its great seeing Bugs Bunny and the rest of the animated cast turn into more realistic CGI characters.

Check out the trailer now, its a lot more fun than it should be, and the movie gets a theatrical and streaming release on July 23rd in the UK and July 16th in America.
