News from around the web

Another weekend with no major, much hyped new releases we have a new number one in the shape of See How They Run~2022 which has a good cast and takes advantage of the movie slump.

There are 4 'new' releases inside the top 5 this weekend with the Spanish animated movie Tad the Lost Explorer and the Curse of the Mummy new at 2 while the re-release of Jaws comes in at number 3 and the Indian movie Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva is new at 4.

Outside the top 5 Bodies Bodies Bodies makes its debut at number 7 with £351,159.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - See How They Run~2022 (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - See How They Run~2022 (@1)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (16 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£82.4 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 9th - 11th September 2022

Highest new movie of the weekend

Starring Saoirse Ronan this murder mystery from director Tom George tops this weekends box office on its debut weekend of release in one of the quietest weekends since March this year when The Batman was on its fourth weekend at the top.

The movie takes £1.16 Million on its debut weekend and is the only movie this week to go over the million mark.

Coming from Spain this sequel animated feature lands on the box office at number 2 this weekend with £818,525.

The movie is a sequel to the 2018 movie Tad the Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas which took £302,312 on its single weekend on the chart on February 2018.

Jaws

Originally released at the end of 1975 this is the movie which not only put its director Steven Spielberg on the movie map but is often credited with creating the movie blockbuster.

This years re-release enters the box office at number 3 with £524,233, a weekend gross that would have normally hardly got it in the top 10 but weekend grosses are particularly low this weekend.

Indian movies always do well at the UK box office and this new movie from director Ayan Mukerji enters the chart at number 4 this weekend with a gross of £516,942.

Last weeks top movie falls to number 5 this wekend with a gross of £382,581 on its 11 weekend of release.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £44.7 Million which makes it the second highest grossing movie of 2022 in the UK.

Cinemas in the US will start to open from July 4th with many announcing they will open a couple of weeks later on July 16th so we are still rely on unofficial sources for the US box office chart.

Topping this week from what is now over a thousand cinemas open we have the 1993 classic Steven Spielberg movie Jurassic Park while the top new film is follows at number 8.

Here is a breakdown of this weeks 'top 5'.

Jurassic Park

Released in 1993 this was the first movie to use CGI effects to a large degree and make it a central character, and the film was a monster hit and was for a time the highest grossing movie in the world.

The movie has had a couple of re-releases and this week it is the top grossing movie in the US with a weekend gross of $517K, its total gross is $403.8 Million over 27 years!

Jaws

Director Steven Spielberg again is at number 2, this time with his timeless classic shark movie which celebrates 45 years this year.

The movie takes $516K this week which pushes the films total US gross to $260 Million over its 45 years of release.

The Invisible Man

Back to modern movies and after spending 10 weeks on the chart 15 weeks after release (it had a few weeks out of cinemas when they first closed down), the Universal movie takes $201K pushing its total to $64.9 Million.

Trolls World Tour

Considering this animated sequel got a lot of press for going direct to VOD the movie is at number 4 this week having taken $160K for a $3.8 Million total after 6 weeks.

The Hunt

At number 5 this week is this horror movie which seems to be getting a bit of a cult following and this weekend takes $136K for a $5.8 Million total after 7 weeks.

Followed

Highest new entry of the week is at number 8, this low budget horror movie based on a serial killer not liking people following them on social media has taken $107K over the weekend.

Back to the Future Part II is going back to the cinemas for just one day, 21st October 2015 - See what they did there!

To mark the occasion a trailer for Jaws 19 has been release, which if you'll remember was featured in the movie.

The movie was once considered the weak link in the Back to the Future trilogy but over the eyars has not become a fan favourite and considered an important part of the series.

Check you local showtime to see where the movie if playing on Back to the Future Day - 21st October 2015.

One bit of news that I'm really excited about is the probability that the Back to the Future trilogy will be a Blu-ray release this year, and with some interesting new features.

This advert below was posted on a Spanish DVD site zonadvd.com, and the excellent website The Digital Bits have done the digging around to all but confirm that the poster is authentic, so it looks like were going to get the films this year, although the advertised dates could change.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Part 1's release in cinemas, was it that long ago? So it seems natural that it should get a re-release this year, and with the mess up of the original DVD release, this should be something special, especially is the print has been re-mastered by Robert Zemeckis himself, let's hope we get a proper widescreen this time as well.

Looking at the poster you can't help but notice the interesting special feature in the corner, Jaws 19 in 3D, what's that all about, it's an excellent in joke from the second movie, maybe Spielberg got his son to direct it as well.
