News from around the web

It's been a long time coming, 13 weeks in fact, but it looks like this weekend will finally see the second movie of 2022 break the $1 Billion milestone as Jurassic World Dominion goes past this once unreachable figure.

Top Gun Maverick has been enjoying all the glory this summer as the biggest movie and the only movie to pass the $1 Billion milestone, but it will be joined this weekend.

Pre Pandemic it was not unusual for a (mainly Disney/Marvel) movie to pass the milestone, but since 2020 only Spider-Man: No Way Home and Top Gun Maverick has managed to go over $1 Billion in global grosses.

This weekend the third, and final! Jurassic World movie will make it meaning that all the sequel trilogy movies have made over a Billion dollars globally making it a $4 Billion dollar sequel franchise and making the Jurassic series one of the most profitable in Cinema history.

The big question now is will this spur Universal on to make another set of Dinosaur movies?

Flying in at the top of the North American box office this weekend is the new movie in the MCU series of films Thor: Love and Thunder, which is also the only new movie of the week on the top 15!

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Thor: Love and Thunder (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Thor: Love and Thunder (@1)
  • Longest run - Everything Everywhere All At Once (16 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick ($597.4 Million)

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 8th - 10th July 2022

Directed by the same director as Thor: Ragnarok Taika Waititi the fourth movie in the Thor franchise makes it debut at the top of the North American box office.

A debut gross of $144.1 Million gives it a better opening than Thor: Ragnarok but its not as good as the last two MCU movies Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After making its debut at the top of the North American box office last weekend the sequel movie to Minions falls one place to number 2 with a weekend gross of $46 Million, a 57% drop on its second weekend.

The movie now has a total gross of $210.6 Million after 2 weekend and is the 5th top movie of 2022.

Still inside the top 3 after 7 weeks of release the Tom Cruise starring sequel to Top Gun drops to number 2 this weekend with $15.5 Million, a 40% drop.

The movie has now taken $597 Million in the US, it will pass $600 Million by next weekend and it is the top movie of 2022 by quite a margin.

It is also on the verge of braking into the top 10 movie of all time in North America as it currently sits at number 12.

The Elvis Presley bio-pic from director Baz Luhrmann falls to number 4 this weeeknd with $11 Million on its 3rd weekend, a 30% drop over last weekend.

The movie has not taken a total gross of $91.3 Million at the North American box office.

Jurassic World: Dominion

As the Dino franchise movie starts to end its run it falls to number 5 this weekend with $8.5 Million, a 46% drop over last weekend, which gives the movie a total US gross of $350 Million.

The movie is currently the 4th top movie of 2022, but it will end up as the lowest grossing of the Jurassic World trilogy of movies behind both Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The new movie from Pixar and Disney, Lightyear makes its debut at number 3 this weekend as Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun Maverick prove too strong to remove from the top 2.

Also new this weekend in the top 5 is Good Luck to You Leo Grande while at the lower end of the box office top 15 is Veetla Vishesham at number 13 with £14,003 and the re-release of the Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me which is new at 14 with £12,843.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Jurassic World: Dominion (2nd weekend)
  • Highest debut - Lightyear (@3)
  • Longest run - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and The Bad Guys (12 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£57 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 17th - 19th June 2022

Jurassic World Dominion

Second weekend at the top for the Jurassic World sequel movie as it takes £5.7 Million over the weekend, a large 53% drop over its debut last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £21.7 Million after 10 days of release and gives it the 8th top movie of 2022.

So far this is the lowest grossing movie of the Jurassic World series, although it is still tracking to be one of the top 5 movies of 2022 in the UK.

Despite the fact the movie was delayed over a year, and the 36 years between the two movies no one could have imagined how successful this sequel to Top Gun was going to be.

This weekend the movie takes £4.2 Million on its fourth weekend, this is a small 24% over the previous week.

The movie has now taken an incredible £57.3 Million in the UK and is showing no signs of slowing down.

The sequel movie is currently the 25th top movie in the UK, comparing it to the top movie of all time in the UK Star Wars: The Force Awakens that movie has taken £108.4 Million on its fourth weekend, so this is tracking about half that, although the 2015 Star Wars sequel had a massive built in audience, this is slow burning and using word of mouth.

The movie is the top film of 2022 in the UK where is could stay until the end of the year.

Top new movie of the weekend is the first Pixar movie to get a cinema release since the CGI animated studio released Onward at the start of 2020 as the world locked down to COVID-19.

This Buzz Lightyear origins movie from the Toy Story series of films makes its debut to £3.7 Million, with mixed reviews clearly damaging its box office performance.

Onward from 2020 make a similar debut but that was a world that was starting to shutdown with the public getting nervous about spending time in rooms with lots of people.

Another new movie this weekend making its debut at number 4 as Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack star in Sophie Hyde's new movie.

The film makes its debut on the UK box office with £238,640.

The MCU sequel movie falls to number 3 this weekend with £169,578 on its 7th weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £41 Million and its the 2nd top movie of 2022.

As Jurassic World: Dominion spends its 2nd weekend at the top of the US box office the new Pixar movie Lightyear makes its debut at number 2.

Meanwhile further down the box office Brian and Charles directed by Jim Archer makes its debut at number 10 with a first weekend gross of $198,000.

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 17th - 19th June 2022

Jurassic World Dominion

Spending a second weekend at the top of the US box office the Jurassic World sequel movie wich takes $58.6 Million, a large 59% drop over its debut last weekend.

This pushes the movies total gross afte 2 weekends of release to $249.7 Million on its way to quarter of a billion dollars.

The movie is now the fourth top grossing movie of 2022 in the US with just The Batman, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness and Top Gun Maverick ahead of it.

The latest Pixar movie gets its debut in cinemas instead of the Disney+ streaming service which the last couple of movie have, and despite the mixed critical reviews the movie makes its debut at number 2 this weekend.

Taking $51 Million it is higher than the debut of the last Pixar movie to hit cinemas Onward, but that movie released in March 2020 when the country was on the verge of a national lockdown which effected its debut.

The movie has a tough road ahead considering the critical response and we could see this hit Disney+ sooner rather than later.

With a small 12% drop from last weekend the Tom Cruise starring sequel movie takes $44 Million on its 4th weekend on the box office.

This pushes the movies total US gross to an amazing $466 Million making the top grossing movie of 2022, and with the half billion mark achievable by next weekend this could remain the top movie of the year.

Interesting fact - the top 3 movies this week make the lion share of this weeks box office in the US.

The MCU sequel movie takes $4.2 Million over its 7th weekend which, a small 14% drop.

This gives the movie a total North American gross of $405 Million and it is the second top grossing movie of 2022.

The animated movie TV spin off falls to number 5 this weekend with $1.1 Million, a large 53% drop, giving the movie a US total of $29.7 Million after 4 weeks of release.

In comparison, Onward took $68 Million on its debut weekend and landed at number 1, but it was not a recognised IP and it was basically the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and people were starting to get nervous about cinemas before the world locked down.

The Tom Cruise high flying sequel has far outdone its expectation and on its 4th weekend drops to number 3 with $83 Million from 65 countries, it is a tiny 19% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken an amazing $885 Million globally and is the 2nd top movie of 2022, it is only a matter of time before it tops the list for 2022 and it will most likely top $1 Billion.
