News from around the web

It has not been a bad year for the box office and cinemas in the UK in 2024, but it also hasn't been a great year and box office grosses on the whole have been down compared to 2023 and are actually at their lowest sine the pandemic of 2020.

Despite there being some well hyped movies like Deadpool & Wolverine and Wicked~2024 there has not been an event for cinemas goers like the Barbie and Oppenheimer of 2023 or the Top Gun Maverick of 2022.

Inside Out 2 was the top movie of 2024 with over £58 Million from last summer with Deadpool & Wolverine not too far behind with nearly £58 Million.

Late entry Wicked~2024 which is still on release made it to 3 with £53 Million and Despicable Me 4 took £48 Million at 4 with Dune Part 2 rounding out the top 5 at number 5.

Here is the full top 10 grossing movies of 2024.

  1. Inside Out 2 - £58.2 Million
  2. Deadpool & Wolverine - £57.5 Million
  3. Wicked~2024 - £53 Million
  4. Despicable Me 4 - £48.3 Million
  5. Dune Park 2 - £39.6 Million
  6. Moana 2 - £33.7 Million
  7. Paddington in Peru - £33 Million
  8. Gladiator II - £30.3 Million
  9. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - £26.3 Million
  10. Kung-Fu Panda 4 - £21.9 Million

At the UK box office this week Godzilla stomped on all in its path to become the nation's top film on its debut week of release.

It was a hot weekend in the UK with many annual events happening which more than likely had an effect on the takings of Godzilla, but the monster flick, directed by Britain's own Gareth Edwards still managed a stomping £6.4 million.

If you compare this to the 1998 film of the same name that's £2.3 million higher but taking inflation into account this is almost an identical debut gross, although the 1998 film did open mid July.

Last weeks top film, Bad Neighbours, falls a single place this week to number 2 having grossed £11.3 million over 10 days, although much of this was in preview showings a week before the official release.

One other new film charted this week - The Two Faces of January

This time last year Fast and Furious 6 opened at the top of the box office, keeping The Great Gatsby to open at 2, the previous top film, Star Trek Into Darkness, fell to 3.

Five years ago Angels and Demons made its debut at the top knocking Star Trek into the runner up spot.

Ten years ago Van Helsing held the top for a 3rd week while the top new film was The Football Factory at 4.

Fifteen years ago Forces of Nature climbed to the top knocking I Still Know What You Did Last Summer to the number 2 spot.

After a successful advanced showing last week which would have put the film at the top those figures go a long way to make sure that bad Neighbours knocked The Amazing Spider-Man 2 off it's perch this week.

Starring Seth Rogan and Zac Efron Bad Neighbours had no trouble de-throning the web slinger with an £8.5 million debut.

Spider-Man 2 falls into second place with £1.3 million bringing it's total gross to £22 million after 4 weeks.

Also new this week are: - Sabotage - Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest - La Cenerentola - the latest from the Met Opera - Frank - The Wind Rises - Before The Winter Chill

Last year saw the much anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness enter at the top knocking Iron Man 3 into second place.

Five years ago saw JJ Abrahams first Star Trek film enter the box office at the top knocking X-Men Origins: Wolverine into 3rd place with Coraline entering at 2.

Ten years ago had Van Helsing debuting at the top meaning Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind fell to number 2.

Fifteen years ago had I Still Know What You Did Last Summer go to the top on it's first week leaving The Waterboy to have a single week at the top.
