This week the Michael Vaughn directed Kingsman The Golden Circle takes over the top of the UK chart with ease, IT makes a respectable fall to number 2.

Following on from the 2015 film Kingsman The Golden Circle this week makes its debut at number 1 with a weekend gross of £8.5 million.

Kingsman had a debut weekend of just over £4 million do the sequel has double that gross and has already made half of the originals total gross.

With this debut Kingsman 2 should be able to getting in the region of £25 - £30 million quite easily.

After a couple of weeks at the top IT falls to the runner up spot although it still manages a very respectable £2.8 million.

This brings the films total gross to £26.4 million, with plenty of milage left in the film we could be looking at £35 million total gross.

With the new Kingsman movie out this week studios didn't want to put anything of note against it so there are no other new film on the top ten.

The power of IT at the UK box office was far too strong this weekend and easily remains at the top of the box office while Judy Dench stars in the highest new entry.

Warner Bros. continue to market the horror film IT to great effect as the film takes £6 million which is only a 40% drop from its debut last weekend.

This brings the movies total gross to an excellent £21.1 million from 10 days of release which is putting the film on for about £35 million total take in the UK.

Highest new film of the week is Victoria and Abdul, directed by Stephen Frears, it stars the legendary Judi Dench as Queen Victoria.

The film takes £1.8 million for the weekend which places it at number 2 on this weeks chart.

Also new this week is Mother! which makes its debut at number 3, and despite good reviews and plenty of publicity takes a quite disappointing £800,000.

American Assassin is also making its debut, it enters the box office at number 4 and The Jungle Bunch is a new entry at number 6.

For the fifth straight weekend the longest running film is Despicable Me 3, now with 12 weeks on the box office, while Dunkirk is the highest total grossing movie with £55 million.

It was a quiet weekend at the UK box office as top 15 total gross reaches a level not seen since December 2015 with Tom Cruises new film American Made takes the crown.

Grossing a little over 1 million pound the film had little to no competition for the top spot and takes nearly £900,000 less than last week number 1 film.

Ironically what American Made has done that Cruises last film didn't do is go to number 1, The Mummy released in early June could only manage a number 2 debut, although it did it with £3.3 million.

Of interest is this weeks full weekly breakdown, if the chart was based on Monday - Sunday figures this week chart would have been as follows: Dunkirk, The Hitmans Bodyguard, The Emoji Movie, Annabelle Creation, Despicable Me 3.

American Made is the only film this week to take over a million is takings, Dunkirk which is at number 2 this week is just shy and yet again nearly took the top spot.

The Hitmans Bodyguard fell from the top to number 3 this week with a weekend gross of just over £800,000 which is 4% drop from last week.

The films total gross after 2 weekend of play is now £4 million.

Also new this week are Logan Lucky directed by Steven Soderbergh at number 4 and Detroit starring John Boyega and directed by Kathryn Bigelow at number 7.

Dunkirk is this weeks top total grossing film with a total that is now over £50 million while Despicable Me 3 has now been on the chart for a run of 9 weeks.

Twenty five years ago - Alien 3 was the top new film of the week making its debut at number 1 while Lethal Weapon 3 fell down to number 2 after a single week at the top.

The was a battle at the top of the Uk box office this week between The Hitmans Bodyguard and Dunkirk and with a gap of less than £50,000 Bodyguard won.

The comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson took £1.9 million on its debut weekend to reach the top, this is the lowest opening for a film to reach number 1 since Billy Elliot The Musical Live took the top spot in September 2014.

This means that the total gross for the top 15 films is also at a low with just £10 million taken.

Falling from the top is Dunkirk, although it held on tight and in the end lost to by a narrow margin taking to second place with £1.8 million.

Dunkirk is still showing strong figures from the week and took £4 million Monday - Sunday to brings its total to nearly £50 million, it is easily the second top grossing film of 2017.

Interestingly the Monday - Sunday figures puts The Hitmans Bodyguard at number 4 with Annabelle Creation and The Emoji Movie coming second and third.

At the UK box office over the weekend there was no doubt which film was going to be the biggest, and in the process a new franchise is born in the superhero stable.

The Marvel/Disney stable bring another franchise to the big screen in the shape of Guardians of the Galaxy, and unlike their Avengers counterparts these are a bunch of misfits.

Guardians took a very respectable £6.3 million to make number 1, comparing Guardians to Avenger (called Avengers Assemble in the UK) that film released in 2012 had a £15.7 million opening, nearly double that of Guardians.

Although Avengers was not a sequel as such it did have a number of high grossing companion films before it including Iron Man and Thor.

Last weeks top film, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, falls a single place to 2 this week after 3 weeks of release, its total gross is £23.4 million.

Also worth a mention this week; Secret Cinema are showing a months worth of Back to the Future screening in surroundings based on the films Hill Valley, this took the nearly 30 year old film back to number 7 this week.

This time last year The Smurfs 2 hit the top of the box office on it's debut knocking The Wolverine to number 4.

Five years ago Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was still at the top keeping the highest new entry at 2, G-Force.

Ten years ago King Arthur took the top spot on it's debut which left Spider-Man 2 to tumble to second place.

Fifteen years ago Mike Myers stared in Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me which knocked Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace into second place.

Twenty years ago in the month of August Jim Carey was on a wave after Ace Ventura and The Mask was sitting as the top film of the month.
