News from around the web

As the movie goes wide into 54 counties including North America Sonic the Hedgehog 2 easily tops the global box office on its second weekend of release.

Top new movie of the weekend is Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore which gets released in 22 countries, but has to wait until this weekend coming for its North American debut.

Also entering the global box office at number 10 is French movie Qu'est-ce Qu'on a Tous Fait Au Bon Dieu? (Serial (Bad) Weddings 3) which takes $5.7 Million from its single country release.

World box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (@2)
  • Longest run - The Batman (6 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman ($735 Million)

World box office top 5 weekend breakdown 8th - 10th April 2022

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

After being beaten by Morbius last weekend the speedy blue video game hedgehog jump to the top of the global box office with ease this weekend having extended its country count to 54.

The movie takes $108 Million, a 76% increase, over the weekend pushing its total global gross to $141 Million after 2 weeks of release, it is the 9th top movie of 2022.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Getting a release in 22 countries the third in the Fantastic Beasts series of movies makes its debut at number 2 this weekend getting a release in 22 countries.

The movie takes a reasonable $58 Million on its debut, but with a release in countries like North America next weekend expect this to more than double and the movie to take over at the top.

Morbius

Falling hard to number 3 this weekend is the Marvel/Sony vampire movie starring Jared Leto which takes $25.2 Million over the weekend, a hard 70% drop over last weekend.

This puts the movie total global gross at $126 Million after 2 weeks of release, this must be seen as a big disappointment for Sony, especially after the mega success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Batman

Falling to number 4 on its 6th weekend of release the Caped Crusader takes $13 Million, a 46% drop over last weekend, the movie has taken a total of $735 Million.

The movie will fail to make $1 Billion, not too much of a surprise considering there is still a pandemic gripping the world and the Cinese release was far less than expected, but the movie is the top film of 2022 across the globe, so far!

Ambulance

The Michael Bay movie jumps to number 5 this weekend, from number 9, with $11.5 Million, a 75% increase over last weekend as the movie expands into 69 countries, this takes its total gross to $31 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Sony releases their next comic book movie from the Spider-Man universe with the vampire villain Morbius and despite mixed reviews the movie makes its debut at the top of the global box office.

Also making its debut in second place is the video game favourite Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which was release in fewer countries and did top the box office in many of them<./p>

World box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Morbius (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Morbius (@1)
  • Longest run - Sing 2 (15 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - The Batman ($710.5 Million)

World box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd April 2022

Morbius

Sony continue their run of Spiderverse villains following in the same vein as Venom as Jared Leto leto becomes scientist who tries to find a cure for his medical condition and becomes a vampire type creature.

The movie takes $85 Million globally on its debut from 63 countries, a figure reflective of the critical panning the movie got and the bad word of mouth.

This movie could be a mis-step for the successful Spiderverse movies and the almost guaranteed sequel must now be in question.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Released in 31 countries, presumably to stop a clash with Morbius in many territories, the blue hedgehog video game hero makes its debut at number 2 with $25.2 Million.

The movie gets a far wider release next weekend and its likely we'll see it climb to the top of the global box office.

The Batman

Five weeks on fro the caped crusader as the movie slips to number 3 on the global box office with a weekend gross of $24 Million from 77 countries, a 47% drop giving the movie a total gross of $7120.5 Million.

The movie has been a major success for the DC universe and a sequel is all but guaranteed, but considering we just has Spider-Man: No Way Home almost hit $2 Billion globally Warner Bros. must be feeling a little upset the movie didn't get to go over the Billion milestone!

RRR

The smash hit Indian period drama falls to number 4 this weekend after its impressive debut at 3 last weekend, this week it takes $22.7 Million from 21 countries, a 41% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total of $112 Million.

The Lost City

Dropping to number 5 this weekend after its number 2 debut last weekend the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum action comedy takes $16.7 Million from 18 countries on its second weekend, a 52% drop, giving the movie a total of $61.5 Million.

In comparison Channing Tatum's last movie Dog, released only a few weeks ago had taken over $35 Million total by its second weekend of release globally, although this movie is due to open in quite a few territories still.

Sony have released the second trailer for their upcoming villain movie from the Spiderverse Morbius starring Jared Leto.

The trailer is far darker than the previous trailer, which was just a teaser released during filming, and this one gives far more of the story away.

Jared Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius who transforms himself into a Vampire type creature.

The movie also stars Michael Keaton, Matt Smith and Tyrese Gibson in what looks to be the next Marvel hit movie.

The movie is released worldwide on 21st January 2022.

A new poster has been released for upcoming movie Dune which can seen in full below.

The movies release date is 22nd October 2021 and it stars among others Timothe Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson and is directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Synopsis of the movie
