News from around the web

Making it four weeks at the top of the box office chart this week, and becoming the top grossing film ever in the UK in that time Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The seventh Star Wars film has not taken just about every honour the box office can give, except for highest grossing film across the globe, which it will probably leave where it is.

The figure for The Force Awakens this week are, £6 million for the weekend, £11 million for the week and £108 million total gross, it is of course the highest total grossing film on the chart.

Highest new film of the week is the 8th Quentin Tarantino film (have directors ever promoted film before by how many they have made!) The Hateful Eight which enters the chart at number 2.

The film takes £2.7 million for the weekend, £4 million behind The Force Awakens showing how popular that film still is.

The are no other new films on the box office top 10 this week.

Historical charts

A year ago - Tak3n (Taken 3) was the highest new film of the week knocking The Theory of Everything down to number 3.

Five years ago - Oscar winner The Kings Speech entered that box office at the top knocking Little Fockers down to number 3.

Ten years ago - King Kong remained at the top of the chart and with a static top 2 the highest new film was Just Friends at number 3.

Fifteen years ago - Unbreakable was unmovable at number 1 with the highest new film coming in at number 4 in the shape of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, good for an oriental movie.

Twenty years ago - Seven (or Se7en) was the highest new film at the top of the box office knocking Ace Ventura When Nature Calls down to number 2.

Twenty five years ago - Arachnophobia came in at the top and knocked Home Alone to number 2.

As with the previous 2 week Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the top film across the UK with a weekend gross, slight above the previous week, of £10 million.

The incredible gross of The Force Awakens has now reached £97 million and is the second highest grossing film of all time in the UK sandwiched between 2 Bond films.

At the current rate of ticket sales the seventh Star Wars will become the biggest grossing film of all time in the UK by next weekend beating the £102.8 million of Skyfall.

Elsewhere there are still new films entering the box office and this week the Jennifer Lawrence/Robert De Niro double header Joy is the top new film.

Entering at number 3 the debut weekend gross of the movie is a little over £1.5 million.

Also new on this weeks box office top 10 is Eddie Raymond's new film The Danish Girl at 4 with £1.3 million.

The Force Awakens is understandably the highest total grossing film on the box office while Spectre is the longest running film on the charts clocking up 10 weeks so far.

Historical Charts - A year ago - The Theory of Everything saw the new year in with a debut at the top knocking The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies down to number 2.

Five years ago - Gullivers Travels was the first number 1 of the new making its debut there knocking Little Fockers down to 2.

Ten years ago - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe stayed at the top for a second week while Cheaper by The Dozen 2 was the highest new film at 3.

Fifteen years ago - Unbreakable was the top new film of the week at number 1 knocking Meet The PArents down to number 2.

Twenty years ago - Ace Ventura When Nature Calls made its debut at number one leaving Babe to fall down to number 2.

Among all the award glory that The Kings Speech is gaining it has also managed to retain it's top on the UK box office this week with a weekend gross of £4,401,926 which is higher than last week but the film was being shown in more theatres.

It's a certainty that the film will continue to gross in large numbers with the seemingly continuous awards being beset upon the film, a Golden Globe is in the bag, a number of BAFTA's are sure to follow and Oscar is definitely knocking on the door.

After 10 days of release the film has taken a total gross of £10,759,019. New this week at 2 is Green Hornet, the latest in a long run and continuing run of high budget super hero movies. Starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou and Cameron Diaz Green Hornet took £1,878,905 over the weekend.

Falling a single place to three this week is Danny Boyles true life drama 127 Hours which grossed £1,342,432 increasing it's total for 10 days to £4,367,411, a little less than maybe would have been expected but this is no Slumdog!

The last 2 place on the top 5 are taken by Christmas hold over movies Gulliver's Travels and Little Fockers which take £1,252,107 and £1,224,667 respectively over the weekend.

The box office this week is down on this time last year where Avatar and Sherlock Holmes were still taking good money at the box office, although for ticket sales Avatar is in line with The Kings Speech due to the 3D tax for the Cameron extravaganza.

Jack Black scores the first top film of the year in the re-telling of the giant movie Gulliver's travels.

Supported by a cast of many British actors including the likes of Billy Connelly, Catherine Tate and James Cordon, the giant movie takes in an excellent £7,028,747 over the New Year period, no doubt helped by the mega press that Jack Black and other members of the cast have done on British TV.

Black has had a mixed bag of success in the UK with his last film, Year One, bombing with £2,776,236, but then he's had hits like King Kong which took £26,080,026 in the UK, so Gulliver's Travels will rank among his higher grossing movies.

Falling to second this week is The Little Fockers with £2,614,802 bringing it to £11,159,635 over a ten day period.

New at 3 is Jake Gyllenhaal in a film directed by Edward Zwick, Love and Other Drugs takes £1,606,253 over the weekend.

New at 4 Peter Weir directs Colin Farrell and Jim Sturgess in The Way Back to the tune of £1,327,650 and falling And finally in the top 5 falling is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader which takes £1,207,264 which brings it total gross now to £11,263,418 which is the lowest of all the Narnia films. This week the top 7 films all took over a million pound each in box office takings, very good compared to last week when only the top film took over a million, and better than last year when only the top 4 took over a million.
