News from around the web

This weekend marks the lowest grossing total weekend since 4th September 2020 when Tenet was the top movie of the weekend and the country was still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic.

See How They Run~2020 remains at the top for a second weekend while the only new movie of the weekend is the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream at number 10.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - See How They Run~2022 (2nd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Moonage Daydream (@10)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (17 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£82.8 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 19th September 2022

Remaining at number 1 this weekend is the comedy murder mystery from director Tom George starring Saoirse Ronan which takes £984,779 on its second weekend of release, a small 15% drop from last weekend.

The movie remains at the top largely because there was no major new release on the box office this weekend, the movie has taken £2.8 Million over its 2 weeks of release.

When there is nothing new at the cinema people go and see the old movies they missed, hence the Brad Pitt action/comedy jumps back up to number 2 from 8 on its 7th weekend of release with £325,252, a small 6% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken £10.3 Million at the UK box office over its 7 weeks of release.

Another big movie jumping back up the box office is the sequel movie to Minions which jumps back from 5 to 3 on its 12th weekend with £321,746, a 16% drop over last weekend.

The Despicable Me universe movie has now taken £45.1 Million in the UK over its 17 weeks and is the second top movie of 2022 in the UK.

Top Gun: Maverick

Making a magnificent movie back into the top 5 bouncing from 9th to 4th is the movie of the summer which takes £320,963 on its 17th weekend on the box office, and this weekend gross is an amazing 3% higher than last weekend.

The movie is the top film of 2022, and will end up that way by the end of the year as Avatar: The Way of Water wont have the steam to get past a billion in 2022 as its release is so late in the year.

The movie is also the 8th top movie of all time in the UK having jumped over Star Wars: The Last Jedi this week, I would say the £89 Million of Avengers: Endgame is out of its range but you simply never know with this film!

The animated feature from the Warner Bros. DC Universe jumps one place to number 5 this weekend with £307,920, a 16% drop over last weekend.

the movie has taken £14.8 Million in the UK over its 8 weeks of release.

Highest new movie this weekend

Highest new movie of the weekend comes in at number 10 this week with a documentary about the Ziggy Stardust years of David Bowie directed by Brett Morgen.

The movie takes £181,467 on its debut weekend.

Horror movie Barbarian~2022 makes its debut at the top of the North American box office this weekend while Indian movie Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva is also new coming in at number 2.

Further down the box office there are new entries for Lifemark at number 7 with $2.2 Million and Medieval at number 14 with $810,000.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Barbarian~2022 (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Barbarian~2022 (@1)
  • Longest run - Spider-Man: No Way Home (25 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($813 Million)

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 9th - 11th September 2022

Highest new movie this weekend

The celebrated horror movie from director Zach Cregger who also directed Miss March in 2009 hits the top of the North American box office on its debut weekend of release.

In a very quiet weekend for the box office through lack of high profile releases the movie takes $10 Million on its debut.

Despite that fact the Indian movie RRR was a bit hit earlier this year in North American it is not that common for Hindi speaking film to do well in America, but given the lack of new movie this movie from director Ayan Mukerji hits number 2 on its debut.

The movie takes $4.4 Million this weekend, in comparison RRR tool $9.5 Million in March landing at number 3, but it was a far busier period for the box office.

The Brad Pitt starring movie falls to number 3 this weekend with a gross of $3.2 Million, a large 43% drop but it is on its 6th weekend of release.

The movie has taken a total of $92.5 Million at the North American box office as it looks at the $100 Million milestone.

Top Gun: Maverick

The biggest movie of the year, so far, drops to number 4 this weekend after hitting the top spot on the last weekend of the summer, this weekend it takes $3.1 Million which is a 47% drop over last weekend, still not bad for a movie on its 16th weekend of release.

This gives the movie a total gross in North America of $705.6 Million which means it is, and most likely will be, the top movie of 2022, the movie has also made its way into the top 5 movies of all time in America as its sits at number 5.

It has a long way to go to get any higher with Avatar sitting at number 4 with $760.5 Million, this seems out of reach for a movie which is coming to the end of its box office life, but I wouldn't write off this movie to do anything just yet!

The animated movie from Warner Bros. falls to number 5 this weekend with $2.8 Million on its 7th weekend, a 44% drop giving it a total North American gross of $85.4 Million.

As the big new movies dry up the box office sees a load of older movies rebounding on the box office which includes the movie of the year Top Gun: Maverick going back to the top of its 15th weekend of release.

Spider-Man: No Way Home gets a re-release and is the top new movie of the weekend, despite it being a re-release, and lands at number 3 while Jaws enters the box office with a weekend gross of $2.6 Million.

The top movie of the weekend which has never been released before is Honk For Jesus Save Your Soul which makes its debut at number 14 with $1.4 Million.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Top Gun Maverick (3rd Weekend (non consecutive))
  • Highest debut - Spider-Man: No Way Home (@3 (Extra footage re-release))
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (15 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home ($811 Million)

US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 2nd - 4th September 2022

Top Gun: Maverick

Climbing back to the top of the US box office as the summer comes to a close is the top movie of the season which takes $6 Million, a 21% increase over last weekend.

Interestingly the is the same behaviour as the form Top Gun movie, which in the summer of 1986 hot the top on its release and then spent another week at the summit as the season came to a close.

The sequel movie has now taken an amazing $699 Million and it is the top movie of 2022, and by next weekend is should have overtaken Black Panther and enter the top 5 North American movies of all time.

The Brad Pitt starring fast train movie stays at number 2 this weekend with a gross of $5.7 Million, a small 2% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross in North America of $86.2 Million after 5 weeks of release.

Although only released last December the last Spider-Man movie has been given a re-release with 20 minutes or so extra footage which takes $5.3 Million over the weekend.

This is the 24th weekend it has spent on the chart and it pushes the movies total gross to $811.6 Million.

THe movie is the 7th top movie of 2022 and is also the 3rd top movie of all time in North America.

The animated feature from the DC superhero universe goes back into the top 5 at number 4 with a weekend gross of $5 Million, an 18% increase.

The movie has taken a total of $80 Million in North America after 6 weeks of release.

Falling from the top where it made its debut last weekend is the horror movie from director Jessica M. Thompson which takes $4.8 Million on its second weekend of release, a 29% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross of $13 Million.

In a fascinating weekend for the UK box office a 10 week old movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru goes back to the top, a 15 week old movie, Top Gun: Maverick goes back into the top 5 and a 2021 movie and one of the top grossing movies in the UK is the top new release, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Adding to this the second highest new movie is E.T. The Extra Terrestrial celebrating its 40th anniversary, yes 40 years since the release of the once global highest grossing movie of all time!

Less impressive this weekend is the debut releases for Three Thousand Years of Longing which is new at 10 with £307,176, Fall~2022 new at 13 with £220,270 and The Forgiven~2021 new at 15 with £182,772.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Minions: The Rise of Gru (3rd Weekend (non condecutive))
  • Highest debut - Spider-Man: No Way Home (@5 (Extra footage re-release))
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (15 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home (£96.9 Million)

UK weekend box office top 5 breakdown 2nd - 4th September 2022

Going back to the top of the UK box office, once again, is the sequel movie to Minions which 5 weeks after it was last at the top, and 10 weeks after it was first at the top it takes £1.06 Million to return to the top, a 46% jump over last weekend.

With no high profile new releases now in the last couple of weeks, and the end of the school summer holidays, and the bargain price of £3 per ticket on Saturday this is perhaps not too much of a surprise.

The movie has now taken £44 Million in the UK and is the second top movie of 2022, it is also the 61st top movie of all time.

Interestingly the movie is behind the first Minions movie but it has been consistently about £1 Million behind.

Also doing well at the end of the school summer holidays and jumping back up to number 2 this weekend is the animated movie based on DC superhero pets which takes £1 Million on its 6th weekend, which is 41% up from last weekend.

The movie has taken a total of £14 Million in the UK over its 6 weeks of release.

Top Gun: Maverick

The movie which simply wont go away is the top movie of 2022 in the UK which this weekend takes £600,258, a modest 7% increase over last weekend.

The movie has now taken a total of £81.6 Million over its 15 weeks of release and is the 9th top movie of all time in the UK.

The only film this weekend on the top 5 this drops week on week is the Brad Pitt fast train heist movie which takes £554,100 on its 5th weekend of release, a 7% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total UK gross of £9.2 Million.

Highest new movie of the weekend

Getting a re-release to celebrate National Cinema Day is the 2021 Spider-Man release from Marvel and Sony with a little help Disney.

The movie takes a quite incredible £469,309 on its return to the box office, incredible because the movie is the 4th biggest movie of all time in the UK and it was only in cinemas earlier this year, and although there is 20 minites extra footage it does not change the story and makes it a 3 hour movie!

Still the movie has now spent 16 weeks on the chart and taken an amazing £96.9 Million, it is also the 8th top movie of 2022.

Animated sequel Minions: The Rise of Gru goes back to the top of the global box office as the movie continues to do well in China and the late summer box office goes very kid orientated as parents find things to do before school starts.

A quiet weekend for new releases also means that the top 10 is fairly static and the top new movie enters at 12 as The Invitation starts its box office run with $8.4 Million.

Also new is After Ever Happy which takes $7.8 Million after topping the box office in many countries including Norway and South Africa, and Tad: The Lost Explorer and the Curse of the Mummy makes an appearance at 15 with $4.1 Million.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Andre Rieues 2022 Maastricht Concert: Happy Days Are Here Again (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Andre Rieues 2022 Maastricht Concert: Happy Days Are Here Again (@1)
  • Longest run - Top Gun: Maverick (14 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Top Gun: Maverick (£80.5 Million)

Global weekend box office top 5 breakdown 26th - 28th August 2022

The sequel movie to Minions from the Despicable Me universe goes back to the top of the global box office on its 10th weekend of release with a global gross of $17.7 Million, 41% down from last weekend.

Despite the reduction in weekend over weekend takings the weekend take is bolstered by good performances in China and Italy where the movie is only on its second weekend.

The movie has done very well globally and still available in 85 countries the movie has taken $868.8 Million and is the 4th top movie of 2022.

The late summer hit movie goes back to number 3 this weekend, driven by a lack of new releases and the movie opening in a couple of new countries.

The movie takes $15 Million on its 4th weekend, a small 25% drop over last weekend, with a total gross of $175 Million to date.

The Chinese only release sequel movie jumps up the chart 1 place this weekend to number 3 with $12.9 Million, all from its single country of release.

This is a 35% drop over last weekend and gives the movie a total global gross of $43.6 Million after 2 weeks of release.

The smash hit cinese movie which is only released in 1 terretory jumps back to number 4 this weekend with 12.1 Million, a 31% drop giving it a 5 week total of $421.9 Million.

The movie is the 9th top grossing globally of 2022.

Top Gun: Maverick

The Tom Cruise starring movie is by far the top movie of 2022 and the only one, so far, to gross over a billion dollars at the global box office.

This weekend on its 14th weekend of release it jumps back into the top 5, at 5, with a gross of $11,4 Million, a small 21% drop over last weekend.

The movie has a chance to go even higher next weekend, can it dare even go back to the top, a massive feat given the movie has taken $1,4 Million so far, or will Spider-Man: No Way Home get in its way with a re-release with 10 minutes extra footage?
