US weekend box office top 5 breakdown 27th - 29th May 2022

Top Gun Maverick

Veteran actor Tom Cruise made came to the attention of most people in the 1986 movie Top Gun and despite a number of attempts to bring a sequel to the big screen it has taken 36 years to make it.

The movie opens over memorial weekend which is often considered the start of the summer season for movies and takes an incredible $124 Million on its debut.

This is not only the top grossing movie over the holiday weekend but incredibly the top debut for Tom Cruise.

The movie has instantly become the 6th top movie in North America for 2022 but will most likely finish at least top 3.

Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness

The MCU movie from Disney has been around now for 4 weeks and gets push from the top after a successful 3 week run where it grossed an amazing $370 Million at the US box office.

This weekend the Sam Raimi directed movie take $16.4 Million, a 49% drop over last weekend, it does take over from The Batman as the top movie of 2022.

The Bobs Burgers Movie

Like The Simpsons before them, Bob's Burgers makes the leap from television to the big screen and lands at number 3 this weekend.

The movie take a respectable $12.6 Million over the memorial day holiday, and with good reviews and school holidays on the horizon, like The Bad Guys this could hang around for a while.

Downton Abbey: A New Era

The sequel movie based on the British Aristocracy falls to number 4 on its second weekend of release with $5.9 Million, a big 63% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a $28.4 Million total.

The Bad Guys

Falling to 3 this weekend is the animated former number 1 movie which takes $4.6 Million on its 6 weekend of release, a small 25% drop, giving the movie a total of $81.3 Million after 6 weeks of release.

After Bond 25, No Time To Die, steals the release date of Fast And Furious 9 the studio has moved the Vin Diesel movie to a little later in the year, May 28th.

The movie had already been moved from its original release date in 2020 to a year later, April 2nd 2021, then Universal moved No Time To Die to that date and we can't have 2 high profile action movies on the same day.

The only option was to move the car movie, a move which suggests that Universal has more faith in the Bond franchise than the Fast And Furious franchise, despite what the box office figures might suggest, but there we have it, a jiggle around for some high profile movies.

The new release date for F9 is Memorial Day in America and Bonds new release date is over the Easter period in the UK so maybe they are catering for the different markets!

With the move to may 28th it now clashes with Disney's live action Cruella (from the 101 Dalmatian universe) which stars Emma Stone as the title character, so expect that to either move or go to Disney+.

We're sure there are more changes to come so stay tuned for the latest information.

Hitting the US box office this week is the Disney live action remake of the 1992 animated movie Aladdin which makes its debut on top this week knocking John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum to number 2 after spending a single week at the top.

Aladdin

With Will Smith in a starring role as the Genie in this Disney live action remake it was never going to be a flop but early trailers got fans worried, they had nothing to worry about as the film gets a good critical response on release.

The film also stars Mena Massoud as the title character with the like of Naomi Scott also starring, the film is directed by Guy Ritchie.

On its debut weekend, which is also Memorial Day in the US, the film manages a fantastic $86.1 million, $112 million if you include the holiday Monday as well.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum

Having made its debut at the top last week the Keanu Reeves starring film falls to 2 this week with $24.3 million.

This pushes the films total US gross to $101 million.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel film falls to 3 this week after 5 weeks of release but is still pulling in the audience with a $16.8 million gross.

This brings the films total gross to $798.1 million and the film is the second highest grossing film ever in the US, it will not go any higher.

Pokeacute;mon: Detective Pikachu

The live action film based on the Nintendo franchise falls to 4 this week but after 3 weeks it takes $13.3 million and pushes its total to $116.1 million.

Brightburn

New from director David Yarovesky is this new take on the super hero idea this is produced by Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn.

The film starring Elizabeth Banks and David Denman takes $7.5 million on its debut.

In the US this week X-Men Days of Future Past proved itself too big a release for all, leaving last week's top film, Godzilla, to only have a single week at the top.

The time travel mutant film took $91.5 million over the three day weekend and $111 million over the memorial day weekend which includes Monday.

Godzilla falls to the runner up spot with a 4 day weekend take of $40 million.

The only other new film in the US to chart this weekend was Blended starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore
