News from around the web

The strength of Toy Story 4 was too much for newcomer Yesterday this week as the Pixar movie remains at the top and the Beatles inspired film enters the box office at number 2.

Toy Story 4

Remaining at the top for a second weekend the animated hit takes £8.3 Million, down less than 50% from last week.

This takes the films total gross in the UK to £27 Million, compared to Toy Story 3 which is the highest grossing film in the series this is £10 Million lower at the same stage of release.

Yesterday

The Beatles inspires hit directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis makes its debut at number 2 this week with £2.2 Million.

The Diretors highest grossing film in the UK to date is Slumdog Millionaire from 2009 who's debut was very similar to this, that film went on to gross £31.6 Million.

Richard Curtis biggest hit to date is LoveActually from 2003 which had a far bigger debut and went on to gross £36.2 Million in the UK with out the Oscar glory Slumdog had.

Aladdin

Disney's live action movie is still going strong in the UK and this week takes £694,716 for a total UK gross of £33.8 Million after 6 weeks of release.

Men In Black: International

Sinking fast but still with its neck above the water a weekend take of £515,506 keeps it in the top 5 at 4 and pushes its total to £6 Million.

There is no doubt this has not been the revival of the series that was hoped and it must be in question if we will see any more Men In Black films going forward.

Casino Royale

Daniel Craigs first outing as James Bond is currently getting the Secret Cinema treatment and this has pushed in film back into the top 5 this week with a weekend gross of £515,506.

This now pushes the films total UK gross to £57.2 Million since its original release in December 2006, it is the 19th highest grossing movie ever in the UK.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel smash hit is still doing very well in the UK and this week it is at number 6 after 10 weeks of release and has an incredible UK gross of £88.3 Million.

Spirited Away is arguably one of director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli best films but in 2001 when the film was originally released it was banned in China, that ban was lifted this week and the film finally got a long overdue release.

There was another animated film released this week in China, and the rest of the world, this week, Toy Story 4, a brand new animation from Pixar and the fourth film in the very successful Toy Story Series.

In most of the world Toy Story 4 has topped the box office, including most of Europe and the United States, but in China the incredible happened and the 18 year old animation beat the brand new films.

This is quite incredible, and good news for cinema and the Chinese box office, I suspect many people in China have seen the film as it has been available on home video for years, but it would seem the public want to see this film on the big screen.

Its not all bad news for the Pixar movie as it has landed on the box office at number 2, but with Spirited Away taking $27.8 Million dollars (converted) compared with $13.2 Million (converted) the Toy Story film took half that of the Japanese animation.

Here is the Chinese top 5 Box Office Weekend of 21st June 2019

  1. Spirited Away $27,842,673
  2. Toy Story 4 $13,209,667
  3. Men in Black International $5,872,709
  4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters $3,455,340
  5. My Best Summer $3,209,289

Toy Story 4 makes its debut at the top of the UK box office pushing 4 week champ Aladdin down to number 3, but its all good news for Disney who have back to back number 1 films.

Toy Story 4

The fourth in the series that started back in 1996 and was the first feature film for the fledgeling company Pixar makes its debut on the UK box office with £13.3 Million.

The original toy story made its debut with £5.35 million, but adjusted for inflation this is about £11.5 Million, in a very similar ball park.

For a better comparison Toy Story 3 made its debut in July 2010 to a phenomenal £21.2 Million which would be £27 Million adjusted for inflation, so this new film has a way to go.

Aladdin

The Disney live action film falls from the top after a fantastic 4 week run and takes £1.2 Million on its 5th weekend.

This pushes the films total UK gross to an excellent £32.5 Million, its still got a way to go to beat the live action champ Beauty And The Beasts £72.4 Million but it has done probably better than expected.

Men In Black: International

The films disappointing debut has continued this weekend as the Men In Black reboot falls to 3 with £1 Million bringing its 2 week total gross to £5 Million.

Rocketman

The Elton John film is hanging onto its top 5 place and this week is at 4 with £783,785 to boosts its total to £21 Million after 5 weeks.

Brightburn

Directed by David Yarovesky and Starring Elizabeth Banks and David Denman this horror superhero film makes its debut at number 5 with £509,030 and is the second highest new film of the week.

Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel film is 9 weeks on now and is about the leave the box office chart but after a record smashing run the film has a total UK gross of £88 Million and the film will most likely be the top grossing film of the year.

A new Pixar film is a big event and a new Toy Story film is an even bigger event, and the new sequel hits the top of the US box office with ease on its debut weekend.

Toy Story 4

The animated feature takes in $118 Million over the weekend, including previews, and hits the number 1 spot easily and although it takes more money than its predecessor the film had less audience.

Still this is good for the sequel to the original Pixar film and it should go on to be one of the top grossing animation in the US ever.

Child's Play

The horror movie remake was never going to compete with Toy Story 4 and comes in at number 2 this week with a debut gross od $14 Million.

Aladdin

The Disney live action movie is still holding on to a position on the top 5 and this week takes $12.2 Million.

This puts the films total US gross at $287.5 Million after 5 weeks of release.

Men In Black: International

The new Men In Black movie falls to number 4 this week from the top with a second weekend gross of $10.7 Million pushing its total to $52.6 Million.

This is not good news for the franchise and it will end up the lowest grossing film in the series.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

At number 5 this week is the animated secret pets film which takes $10.3 Million on its 3rd weekend for a $117.5 Million gross.

Avengers: Endgame

After 9 weeks of release the Marvel movie has a total gross of $834.5 Million and is at number 13 this week.

As expected with the release of a new Pixar movie, Toy Story 4 stormed the global box office and enters the chart at the top grossing more than the rest of the box office combined.

Toy Story 4

This is the fourth film in the critically acclaimed Toy Story series from Pixar, and the film more than comfortably makes its debut at the top of the global box office.

Released in 38 countries the film makes its global debut with a gross of $238 Million.

Aladdin

The Disney live action films is still pulling in audiences globally and this week takes $45.1 Million from 56 countries.

The film has now taken an excellent $810.1 Million after 5 weeks of release.

Men In Black: International

After making its debut at the top of the global box office last weekend the fourth Men In Black film falls to 3 this week with $40.9 million from 66 countries.

This takes the films total global gross to $182 Million on its second weekend of release.

Spirited Away

Studio Ghibli's 2001 film finally gets a release in China and takes $28.7 Million on its debut weekend of release and is at number 4 on the global box office.

This is 18 years after the films initial release and this gross puts the films total global gross to $277.2 Million.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Five weeks on and the animated comedy falls to number 5 with $21 Million from 43 countries for a total gross of $194.6 Million.
